Message from the Prez

I hope all of you enjoyed your spring break and are refreshed and ready to finish the race. I took my sophomore college shopping over the break. A bit early, but mom needed a few days out of town. I was still riding the UIL sports victory high when we left for the trip and continued to smile as the admissions counselors at the various schools listed what they looked for in a potential student for their schools.

I was once again relieved that CVHS' strong curriculum puts our students in a good position with many great schools.  We were surrounded by students from all over the US who didn't have any AP, IB or other advanced offerings in their schools, nor did their schools stand out in any way.  All four schools we visited (all outside of Texas) knew Carnegie.  We are so lucky to have this great school available to us.

The PTO Board Nominations Committee is seeking fabulous volunteers for the following:

There are two PTO Board positions for which we are seeking nominees. The board meets once a month, usually in the evening.
  • 2nd VP Membership and Communications- responsible for PTO communications and membership and chairs the Communications Committee. This office delegates to committee chairs who recruit members, maintain the membership list, update the PTO Website, publish the PTO Newsletter, and publish the Student Directory.
  • 3rd VP Volunteers and Special events- responsible for PTO programs and special events. This office coordinates and delegates to committee chairs to recruit volunteers throughout the year and refer them to the applicable committees/events.
There are currently four Committee Chairs for which we are seeking nominees. These committee obligations vary.
  • Shared Decision Making Committee PTO Rep- the SDMC is designed to establish, monitor and evaluate goals for budgeting, staffing, curriculum, planning, school organization, staffing patterns and staff development. The PTO has 2 representatives on this committee. Other members include CVHS staff/administration and community representatives. The SDMC meets once a month, usually in the mornings from 8-9 a.m.
  • Facilities Support Chair- this committee organizes school landscaping workdays, suggests general exterior campus improvements, and works with faculty and administration to implement suggestions and identify other needed physical resources for classrooms and campus grounds. This committee is active all year long, and may be involved in supporting/coordinating the pending Pavilion construction project.
  • Scholarship Committee Chair- this committee solicits scholarship applications from graduating seniors, conducts interviews and selects recipients. This committee is active from February to May.
  • College Information Programs Chair- this committee works with the college counselor and school administration to organize, publicize and host events that provide info to students about practice interviews, mentor programs and college financial aid, testing and applications. This committee is predominantly active in the Fall, but may have events in the spring.

Please contact Angela Standridge at amstandridge@earthlink.net, or 713-298-5234 if you would like more information on potential volunteer opportunities.

The people make CVHS the place it is...be one of those people!

PTO Scholarships for Seniors
All seniors are encouraged to apply

This spring, the CVHS PTO will award up to $2,500 in scholarships to members of the Carnegie Vanguard High School Class of 2016.  These scholarships will be awarded without regard to GPA or class rank.  The PTO wants to reward students who display a desire to learn, provide service and show respect for others, and work hard.

Scholarship awards will be based on a combination of factors, including service to school and community, as well as challenges faced and met. Seeking to honor individuals who best represent the spirit of CVHS, both inside and outside the classroom, the PTO encourages ALL Carnegie seniors to apply.

All complete applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. Applicants selected as semi-finalists will be scheduled for interviews in late April and early May.

Application is available HERE

Application deadline is midnight on Friday, April 8.

No late or incomplete applications will be considered.

Submit applications to cvhsscholarship@gmail.com.
Only electronic applications will be accepted.

Winners will be announced at the Senior Dinner tentatively scheduled for May 16.  Scholarship money will be awarded directly to students.

Yearbook ordering time

The 2016 yearbook "Unbroken" is on sale. There is no better way to capture and preserve the year's events and experiences than with the yearbook.

The yearbook costs $70 and can be ordered at balfour.com,  at schoolpay.com, or by check made out to Carnegie Vanguard High School and delivered to Ms. Paget in the library.

Please consider buying an ad for your business or student. Ads can be created online at balfour.com, or can be created with the assistance of the yearbook staff.  Please submit your ad by mid-January so that you can have adequate time to review the finished product.

For more information, e-mail her at APAGET@houstonisd.org.

PTO Corporate Giving Campaign

We invite anyone interested in participating to contact Mark Levine, PTO VP of Fundraising, at mlevine@wkpz.com

Friends and Family Campaign Donors

THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS

We'd like to take a moment to thank so many members of our community for their support of our Friends and Family Campaign.    This years campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavilion in the CVHS courtyard.  This will be a beautiful and functional addition to our existing amphitheater, and will allow us to use the space in more ways.

This effort is spearheaded by CVHS parents Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist, and we are grateful to them for the generous donation of their time and talents.

Our Friends and Family Campaign goal for the 2015-2016 school year is $40,000.    Together we have raised nearly $27,000 to date.   Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the CVHS PTO.
