Message from the Prez
The fight continues and we need everyone to keep up the energy to educate the Board of Trustees about the fairness they claim to want. We have joined up with several magnet schools to ensure the board knows this fight goes far beyond CVHS. Please keep up the e-mails, calls and conversations with board members. Mr. Moss and I met with our trustee, Diana Davila, and felt we were able to convey the facts to her and help her to understand the real story. She highly recommended "face-to-face" conversations with board members so please consider this if you are zoned (i.e. vote for) to the districts of Jolanda Jones, Rhonda Skillern-Jones, Manuel Rodriguez or Wanda Adams. You can visit our website for talking points ( vanguardian.org). Please put March 10th on your calendar and attend the board meeting. Speak if you are comfortable, but if not, just show support. We all stand when any CVHS speaker is up (we will also stand for our partner schools!) so they can see our presence. Due to spring break, we will not have a general meeting in March, but in April we plan to honor our volunteers, present for a vote the slate of PTO board officers for next school year, and continue with our informational speakers geared toward underclassmembers and early planning for college search and application process. We will also be joined by the counselor team and foreign language teachers during our social period. There is something for everyone! Keep Calm and Rhino On! Joan Khosla

Carnegie Sports Update
The Houston ISD Board is scheduled to meet next starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at the Hattie Mae White Building, 4400 West 18th.
At this meeting, the board is set to finalize a decision on possibly eliminating UIL Sports at Carnegie. There is a comprehensive information statement available on the PTO Web site at vanguardian.org. We encourage you all to read it and take the actions described, specifically, but not limited to:
Attend the Board meeting March 10th.
Sign the online petition ( here) to the Board of Trustees regarding the change to board policy to restrict UIL sports to only zoned high schools in HISD. Pass the petition along to all your communities to gather as many signatures as possible and show the board how many people are behind our cause. We will submit this petition with our information packet to the board. Attend one or more of the Rhinos' upcoming baseball games in UIL District 20-6A. There is a schedule at the bottom of this e-mail. First and foremost, attendance at the games lets our students know we're with them. But also, it lets HISD officials know that this effort isn't just a bunch of parents whining about having something taken away from them. There's nothing like community participation to show we care about our Rhinos.
Contact HISD Board Members and let them know that you SUPPORT allowing specialty schools to compete in UIL competitions, specifically sports. UIL also encompasses theatre and academic competitions. Are these next?
The following trustees voted FOR the policy change even though they admittedly did not understand the facts behind the situation. Their contention was that they would gather facts and then make their final decision at the second vote on March 10th.
Rhonda Skillern-Jones, District II, rskille2@houstonisd.org Manuel Rodriguez, District III, mrodrigu@houstonisd.org Jolanda Jones, District IV, jjones57@houstonisd.org Diana Davila, District VIII, ddavila3@houstonisd.org Wanda Adams, District IX, wadams2@houstonisd.org The following trustees voted AGAINST the policy change, sending the message to the athletic department that trying to push a policy change on the board without providing them with factual background is not the way it should be done. Anna Eastman, District I, aeastman@houstonisd.org Michael Lunceford, District V, mluncefo@houstonisd.org Greg Meyers, District VI, gmeyers@houstonisd.org Harvin Moore, District VII, hmoore1@houstonisd.org This fight is not over. If we can just one of those first five, a list which includes Carnegie's own Board member Diana Davila, our way, we all win.

Felicitaciones Seņora Jimenez

There are really only two types of people in the world, those poor, sad souls who don't know Sra. Luisa Jimenez, and those who LOVE HER TO PIECES!!!!
Congratulations to Ms. Jimenez on her very deserving CVHS Employee of the Month award. As the note on the Carnegie FB page said: "She does so much for so many including sponsoring several clubs, spending time with students at charitable events such as the Houston Marathon, and gives out her personal contact information to students so they can contact her after school hours."

Rhinos helping others
NHS would like to thank all parents and teachers who volunteered in one way or another during the 30-Hour Famine event.
This year, the faminers (a word invented for this event) exceeded the goal and were able to raise $12,883.44! This will go towards helping the hungry children of Malawi through education, building water stations and generating community gardens. Thank you for all your help and generosity!
Additionally, NHS will hold its last Blood Drive for the year on April 1st. Once again, we need your blood and it's not an April Fool's joke!

Friends and Family Campaign Donors
THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS
We'd like to take a moment to thank so many members of our community for their support of our Friends and Family Campaign. This years campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavilion in the CVHS courtyard. This will be a beautiful and functional addition to our existing amphitheater, and will allow us to use the space in more ways.
This effort is spearheaded by CVHS parents Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist, and we are grateful to them for the generous donation of their time and talents. Our Friends and Family Campaign goal for the 2015-2016 school year is $40,000. Together we have raised nearly $27,000 to date. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the CVHS PTO.
