Greetings!
HISD board agenda for this Thursdays (Feb 11th) meeting has been posted.  They are scheduled to vote on removing UIL from our school.

Per Agenda Item K.3

SUBJECT: PROPOSED REVISIONS TO BOARD POLICY FMF(LOCAL), STUDENT ACTIVITIES: CONTESTS AND COMPETITION-FIRST READING

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has reviewed its policy regarding University Interscholastic League (UIL) athletic activities and proposes the following revisions:
  • At ATHLETIC PROGRAM, add language clarifying that:
o All schools are encouraged to provide a robust athletic program based on students' interests and capacity of the school.
o UIL athletic programs will be offered only at comprehensive high schools; high schools without an attendance zone may not participate in the UIL athletic program.
o UIL athletic programs currently offered at non-comprehensive high schools must be phased-out by the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
o Students who are enrolled at a non-zoned high school may participate in UIL athletics at their zoned school.

The proposed revised policy is attached.
COST/FUNDING SOURCE(S): None
STAFFING IMPLICATIONS: None
ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS/IMPACT: This agenda item supports HISD Goal 5: Improve Public Support and Confidence in Schools and is aligned to Core Initiative 5: Culture of Trust through Action.

I find their last comment on "organizational goals/impact" to be a joke.  How does removing our UIL sports improve public support and confidence or provide a culture of trust through action?

We need as many people as possible to fill that meeting with CVHS shirts, banners, jerseys, maybe even holding sports trophies.

With regard to speaking.  You can register to speak on an agenda item, which means you are heard before the vote.  We want to limit the # of speakers to 10.  This will allow each speaker 3 minutes.  More than 10 and we are cut to 1 minute, which makes it tough to get a clear thought out.

It would be nice to have a cross section of parents, coaches, students.  Please contact me (Joan - 713-870-7190) if you wish to speak on this agenda item so I can coordinate keeping the # of speakers to 10.  (However, we can certainly bombard the board with emails today and tomorrow!!)

We can have as many speakers as possible during the citizens speaking time at the end of the meeting, but keep in mind that will be after the vote.  So feel free to sign up for that portion and gear your speech according to the results of the vote (i.e., "Thanks for grandfathering CVHS" or "You should be ashamed of yourselves!").

Speakers must be registered by 11 AM tomorrow (Feb 11th) using this link (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AgendaItem).

Please pull as many people as possible to this meeting!!
