Message from the Prez
The school year seems to be rolling along smoothly so far. Now that our UIL sports issue appears to be tabled for a while, HISD administration seems to be on hold as we (anxiously) await the change in leadership. Although recent issues with the school board have caused my eyebrows to rise, they don't directly affect CVHS so we'll just keep a careful watch. Meanwhile, as always, CVHS continues on its path of perfection. Another high national ranking, continued wins with our academic competitions, club and UIL sports, and that rising excitement as the seniors start to hear back from colleges. The graduation clock continues to tick and we all look forward to releasing another excellent batch of humanity onto the world!
So we, as parents, need to keep up our end of the work by supporting our students, guiding them as necessary, and making sure their daily learning environment continues to thrive. There is still time to join 40+ fellow parents at our wine and dinner party on Jan. 30th. It's also never too late to contribute to Friends & Family to help fund our Pavilion cover and other projects the PTO does to support the school. Be sure to join us at our February general meeting as we present another fine speaker. More details to come!

Top-ranked Rhinos
Like the sun coming up in the east, new high school rankings are coming out, and Carnegie is right up there among the best in the nation once again.
First off, the website 101usa.com put out the list of the Top 20 Magnet Schools in the United States, ranking CVHS No. 12 nationally, third in the state of Texas and No. 1 in Houston. Here's an excerpt from the article:
Everything about this school is absolutely fantastic. The teachers are excellent. The staff is excellent. This school truly prepares students for college. It is intense to some, but if they pay attention and stick it out, first semester of college is a breeze.
We couldn't agree more. Secondly, Carnegie seniors Patrick Revilla and Tory Songyang were selected among 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholar candidates. Congrats to Patrick and Tory! Read the complete list here. Third, community ranking site Niche has Carnegie ranked as the school in the Houston area with the best teachers. The Chronicle story is here. Congrats to the entire CVHS community! |

QUICK OVERVIEW:
- The trip will cover 6 countries over 20 days.
- The targeted departure date is June 26, 2017; however, we could leave as early as June 22nd or as late as June 30th.
- In addition to the itinerary stops & sights that will be provided for you by the EF tour guide, we will also be enjoying some free time (whenever possible) in the cities that we are visiting. And - in Paris - we will definitely be making the time to visit the catacombs.
- If you (or any additional travelers) secure your spot with a $95 deposit by January 31st, 2016, you will save $200 [When the registration screen initially pops up, it will show you a different amount. You should "uncheck" the travel insurance option. That will bring it down to $95 & then you can always add the travel insurance later, if you decide that you want to have it.]
- The cost that you see listed provides airfare, lodging, transportation, breakfast, dinner, and all event admission fees. [The only items that are not covered are your daily lunch, your personal spending money, and the $20/day cost (that we will collect prior to departure) for the EF Tour Guide that is with us - and guiding us through all 20 days (24/7) - from the time we land in Ireland to our departure from Amsterdam.]
- There are many payment options. If you contact the customer service line, they can answer all of your questions.

Friends and Family Campaign Donors
THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS
With the end of the year rapidly approaching, we'd like to take a moment to thank so many members of our community for their support of our Friends and Family Campaign. This year's campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavilion in the CVHS courtyard. This will be a beautiful and functional addition to our existing amphitheater, and will allow us to use the space in more ways.
This effort is spearheaded by CVHS parents Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist, and we are grateful to them for the generous donation of their time and talents. Our Friends and Family Campaign goal for the 2015-2016 school year is $40,000. Together we have raised $26,349 to date. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the CVHS PTO.
