PTO News
A message from PTO President Joan Khosla:
Happy New Year and welcome back! I know there was some major "dragging out of bed" this morning in certain bedrooms in our house, and I expect we weren't the only ones. However, rest assured, your PTO is ready for Round Two! Please jump on board this Thursday by joining us at our first general PTO meeting of 2016. We will have our social period at 6:30 p.m. joined by our wonderful math department. After a quick PTO meeting at 7 p.m., get ready to pepper some alumni with your questions about their college decisions, the transition to that environment, and whatever else you think your CVHS student needs to hear. Bring your student along.
Look for news and links below to the upcoming wine and dinner party and keep your eye out for bingo news. Don't forget we are having a covered pavilion naming contest so get those creative juices flowing. Submit suggestions to Mark Levine at mlevine@wkpz.com. As we move into a new year it's important to remember what we've accomplished so far. I want to send out a big "THANK YOU" to all those parents working tirelessly behind the scenes to help out:
- Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist continue to move the pavilion along;
- Thu Hang Dao-Jeanjean and her crew managing the staff appreciation lunches;
- All the people managing lunch sales (way too many to list!);
- Marty Hajovsky with the newsletter;
- Laura Dew with the website;
- And many more, including my fellow board members, all who give their precious time so graciously.

Alumni Panel this Thursday
 CVHS Alumni will be on hand at our general PTO meeting this Thursday, Jan. 7, at 6:30 p.m.
Several CVHS alumni will join us for a panel discussion about the transition from high school to college. Come hear their stories and help your student learn from their experiences.
This is always one of most popular PTO meetings as nobody helps Rhinos like fellow Rhinos. See you there!

More honors for our alums
 Class of 2015 Student Zaakir Tameez was named by the Houston Chronicle as one of Houston's Most Fascinating People of 2015. Zaakir, with the help of several of his peers, founded the HISD Student Congress. As the Chronicle reports, "
The 220,000-student strong group sent 100 representatives to Austin last April to lobby for state Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock's bill which, if passed, would have reformed the state's school funding system." Full story can be found here.
CVHS senior Chance Robinson was among those honored by Gov. Greg Abbott for his selfless acts helping others during the Memorial Day floods. Read about Chance here.
CVHS sophomore Rukmini Kalamangalam is featured in this article about slam poetry and her participation.
Congratulations to the CVHS Classes of 2014 and 2015. They had the highest average SAT composite score in both 2014 and 2015 in HISD. In 2015, CVHS ranks #1 in HISD in all three areas (reading, writing and math)! Congratulations, Rhinos! Great job! |

Employee of the Month
Congratulations to the January 2016 employee of the month, Jocelyn Ellis. She goes above and beyond by teaching yoga classes in the morning. She also makes herself available to students who need to talk at any time. Thank you Ms. Ellis for doing a great job! Do you know a Carnegie Vanguard employee that has gone above and beyond? Yearbook ordering time
 The 2016 yearbook "Unbroken" is on sale. There is no better way to capture and preserve the year's events and experiences than with the yearbook.
The yearbook costs $70 and can be ordered at balfour.com, at schoolpay.com, or by check made out to Carnegie Vanguard High School and delivered to Ms. Paget in the library.
Please consider buying an ad for your business or student. Ads can be created online at balfour.com, or can be created with the assistance of the yearbook staff. Please submit your ad by mid-January so that you can have adequate time to review the finished product.

New SchoolPay System
One-stop shopping for school expenses
 HISD has initiated a new program called Schoolpay to allow parents to pay for school expenses and fees such as meals, club fees and PTO events online, and all in one place.
This brochure explains more about the purpose of Schoolpay and how to use it.

Senior Dues
Important info for the Class of 2016
 With graduation, prom, and senior trip fast-approaching, it's time to start thinking about dues! Dues are $300 this year and include cap and gown, senior breakfast, diploma, graduation, prom, transportation to senior day activities, senior activities, and senior trip! Dues should be sent in as soon as possible. They can be made in partial payments or full. Please make out checks to "Carnegie Vanguard High School" and write your child's name in the memo line. Please also consider donating to the Class of 2016 to sponsor those in need. Just include separate check than that paying for your own student. If you have any questions, or scholarship requests, please e-mail the Prom Committee! |

The CVHS National Honor Society is proud to offer tutoring to all students. Due to high demand for tutors though, the NHS volunteers are moving from individual tutoring to small-group tutoring sessions. Any student who would like tutoring may come to Room 147 during SSEP every week, according to the schedule below:

Friends and Family Campaign Donors
THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS
With the end of the year rapidly approaching, we'd like to take a moment to thank so many members of our community for their support of our Friends and Family Campaign. This year's campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavillion in the CVHS courtyard. This will be a beautiful and functional addition to our existing amphitheater, and will allow us to use the space in more ways.
This effort is spearheaded by CVHS parents Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist, and we are grateful to them for the generous donation of their time and talents. Our Friends and Family Campaign goal for the 2015-2016 school year is $40,000. Together we have raised $26,349 to date.
