PTO News A message from PTO President Joan Khosla:

Ho, Ho, Hold on! It can't be winter break! I guess the holiday lights, shopping traffic, finals week half days, and my college freshman arriving home tonight should have been my clues. I'm sure each of you is anxiously awaiting a little family downtime the next couple of weeks.
The PTO will send the teachers off with a holiday pie and a gift card drawing this Friday (there is still time to donate some cards to the cause). We will also do some planning for next semester. We hope to have final bids on our pavilion cover and perhaps even a start date for installation. Our wine and cheese party and bingo nights are in the works. We will kick off the year with an early general PTO meeting featuring a panel of alumni who will discuss the transition to college and some who are now planning the transition after college. If you have an alumnus who would like to be on the panel, please contact Ms. Chapman, Mr. Frau, or me to get them signed up. The meeting will be on Thursday, January 7th, at 6:30 PM. From the PTO to your family - please have a very happy, safe, and relaxing winter break!

TPSP Students need Mentors Looking for adults to offer professional guidance
Several Juniors in the Texas Performance and Standards Course (TPSP) are seeking mentors to guide their independent projects. A mentor is a professional who has background experience or knowledge in the field that the student has chosen to study. (No CVHS faculty or staff can be mentors.) The mentor must meet with the student twice each grading period to answer their questions and provide guidance for the project. The meetings can be in person, over the phone, or via Skype (or and equivalent). The student will come to them with questions and problems. A list of projects for which students are seeking mentors is below. If you would like to volunteer, or know someone in the community who could help, please contact Ms. Heather Hill for more information. - How does the inclusion of cybernetic parts affect the human body both physically and mentally; what qualifies the surgery to be taken place in the United States?
- How does the over-exertion of injuries of athletes ages 18-30 affect their bodies as they age?
- How does the success of a sports franchise affect the socio-economic aspects of its surrounding community?
- What are some fundamental changes we can make in the meat industry to change its role in global warming that could ultimately lead us to become environmentally sustainable?
- What are the causes and effects of injuries to NBA players?

With graduation, prom, and senior trip fast-approaching, it's time to start thinking about dues! Dues are $300 this year and include cap and gown, senior breakfast, diploma, graduation, prom, transportation to senior day activities, senior activities, and senior trip! Dues should be sent in as soon as possible. They can be made in partial payments or full. Please make out checks to "Carnegie Vanguard High School" and write your child's name in the memo line. Coming back to school
Calling all CVHS Alumni! Rhinos in the News More honors for our alums
'
Class of 2015 Student Zaakir Tamiz was named by the Houston Chronicle as one of Houston's Most Fascinating People of 2015. Zaakir, with the help of several of his peers, founded the HISD Student Congress. As the Chronicle reports, " The 220,000-student strong group sent 100 representatives to Austin last April to lobby for state Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock's bill which, if passed, would have reformed the state's school funding system." Full story can be found here.
Congratulations to the CVHS Classes of 2014 and 2015. They had the highest average SAT composite score in both 2014 and 2015 in HISD. In 2015, CVHS ranks #1 in HISD in all three areas (reading, writing, and math)! Congratulations, Rhinos! Great job!

Friends and Family Campaign Donors
THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS
With the end of the year rapidly approaching, we'd like to take a moment to thank so many members of our community for their support of our Friends and Family Campaign. This year's campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavillion in the CVHS courtyard. This will be a beautiful and functional addition to our existing amphitheater, and will allow us to use the space in more ways.
This effort is spearheaded by CVHS parents Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist, and we are grateful to them for the generous donation of their time and talents. Our Friends and Family Campaign goal for the 2015-2016 school year is $40,000. Together we have raised $26,349 to date. As you make your year-end giving plans, please consider a tax-deductible donation to the CVHS PTO. THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS Carnegie Champions Kevin McCarthy
