PTO News
A message from PTO President Joan Khosla:

UIL sports update:  It appears the potential of CVHS losing its UIL sports has been put on the back burner.  We have been told that the DEC committee does not currently have a discussion item related to this topic on their agenda, nor are they aware of  any upcoming discussion. The committee chairman has assured us the DEC committee does not have the power to remove UIL sports from a school and that power rests with the HISD board.  Thanks to parents Ari Purcell and Colleen Morris who represented CVHS at the DEC committee meeting to let them know we are keeping an eye on their agenda, as well as the board's agenda.  We will continue to monitor this situation and keep you appraised. In the meantime, let's finish this first semester strong, basking in yet another accolade with our record SAT scores and enjoy some well-deserved days off.

Our next general PTO meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 7th.  A panel of former CVHS students will discuss the transition to college.  This is a very informative event. Hope to see you all there!

Keep Calm and Rhino On!

Share the Holiday Spirit
Several ways to support the Rhino community

Want to offer some holiday cheer to teachers, fellow families, or the PTO?   Here are some ways to make the season brighter:

The PTO will be hosting a holiday lunch for teachers on Friday, December 18.  We will hold a raffle and will distribute gift cards to the lucky winners.  IF you'd like to donate a gift card (any store, any amount) for the raffle, please drop it off in the school office in an envelope marked "Staff Appreciation" by 11:30 a.m. on December 18.

The school is once again accepting donations for winter break food baskets.  Non-perishable foods, gift cards, and cash donations can be given to Ms. Alvarenga in the school office.   Thanks to generous donations, we were able to provide meals for seven families over the Thanksgiving break.  For more information, contact Ms. Alvarenga.

Our Friends and Family Campaign is still underway. We have raised nearly $27,000 of our $40,000 target. Please consider a donation to help us reach  our goal. This year's campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavillion in the CVHS courtyard. Click here to make your donation today!
The Puppies are Coming!
It's your chance to frolic before finals!

Faithful Paws  will be bringing a pack of charming therapy dogs to the CVHS lobby  on Monday, December 14th from  11:50-1:20 p.m for some FINALS FURY FUN! Students are invited to drop by and de-stress before the finals frenzy.

Faithful Paws is a team of organized volunteers involving the incorporation of trained animals specifically designed to administer unconditional love and therapy to adults and children in nursing homes, schools or hospitals and to share the joy and furry love of our pets with the people we visit.

More honors for our alums

Class of 2015 Student Zaakir Tamiz was named by the Houston Chronicle as one of Houston's Most Fascinating People of 2015.  Zaakir, with the help of several of his peers, founded the HISD Student Congress.  As the Chronicle reports, "The 220,000-student strong group sent 100 representatives to Austin last April to lobby for state Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock's bill which, if passed, would have reformed the state's school funding system."  Full story can be found here.

Congratulations to the CVHS Classes of 2014 and 2015.  They had the highest average SAT composite score in both 2014 and 2015 in HISD. In 2015, CVHS ranks #1 in HISD in all three areas (reading, writing, and math)! Congratulations, Rhinos! Great job!

Senior Dues
Important info for the Class of 2016

With graduation, prom, and senior trip fast-approaching, it's time to start thinking about dues! Dues are $300 this year and include cap and gown, senior breakfast, diploma, graduation, prom, transportation to senior day activities, senior activities, and senior trip!

Dues should be sent in as soon as possible. They can be made in partial payments or full. Please make out checks to "Carnegie Vanguard High School" and write your child's name in the memo line.

Please also consider donating to the Class of 2016 to sponsor those in need. Just include separate check than that paying for your own student.

If you have any questions, or scholarship requests, please e-mail the Prom Committee

Coming back to school

Calling all CVHS Alumni! Mark your calendars now for the third annual CVHS Alumni Cookies and Cocoa Social at the school Monday, Jan. 4 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

All alumni are invited to come and mix and mingle with all your friends and favorite CVHS teachers and staff. This is the day before students return from winter break, but teachers are working that day and are excited to drink cocoa and see you! This event is free of charge.

RSVP via the Facebook event page here if possible (but not required) so they know how many to plan for. Teachers will be hard at work that day, so please do not arrive any earlier than 2:20 p.m. to respect their time at work. Thanks!

Yearbook ordering time

The 2016 yearbook "Unbroken" is on sale. There is no better way to capture and preserve the year's events and experiences than with the yearbook.

The yearbook can be ordered online at balfour.com, while you can also pay online at schoolpay.com.

Buy an ad for your business or student. Ms. Paget and the yearbook staff can make your ad or assist with any other technical problems.

Cost is $70 per yearbook. Checks made payable to Carnegie Vanguard High School and cash are also accepted, and can be bought to Ms. Paget in the library.

For more information, e-mail her at APAGET@houstonisd.org.

Sibling applying? Let the office know

If you are a current CVHS parent who has a sibling applying for admission for next year, please be sure to indicate that you have a current student on the application. This will allow the magnet office to give sibling preference during the application process.

For more information, e-mail Ms. Moumni at LMOUMNI@houstonisd.org.

Friends and Family Campaign Donors

THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS

With the end of the year rapidly approaching, we'd like to take a moment to thank so many members of our community for their support of our Friends and Family Campaign.    This year's campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavillion in the CVHS courtyard.  This will be a beautiful and functional addition to our existing amphitheater, and will allow us to use the space in more ways.

This effort is spearheaded by CVHS parents Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist, and we are grateful to them for the generous donation of their time and talents.

Our Friends and Family Campaign goal for the 2015-2016 school year is $40,000.    Together we have raised $26,349 to date.   As you make your year-end giving plans, please consider a tax-deductible donation to the CVHS PTO.
