PTO News
A message from PTO President Joan Khosla:

Well, my dreams have been filled with the sweet taste of Officer Fyles' BBQ. It was a great night at Karbach. Cool weather, fantastic BBQ, great company, all wrapped up in a lovely venue.

Thanks to Mark Levine, VP of Fundraising, for his hard work pulling together our first big social of the year. We had a great turnout and are already looking ahead to the wine and cheese and then bingo socials.

The unfortunate ending to that night involved heading over to HISD HQ for the citizen's forum portion that followed the HISD board meeting. We had a good turnout mixed with students, parents, teachers, and alumni parents and teachers (Go Mr. Dewey!). Many spoke; all stood. We hope the board takes note of our frustrations with the potential loss of UIL sports at our school.

We must stay vigilant on this matter. It will be important to have a large crowd attend the next UIL District Executive Committee (DEC) meeting as this is the group whose recommendations will be strongly considered by the board on this topic. We will keep an eye on the HISD meeting announcements and let you know when and where we'll need your support.

Keep Calm and Rhino On!
Joan Khosla
CVHS collecting for good
Contribute to holiday baskets for fellow CVHS families

With the holidays rapidly approaching, the PTO plans to provide holiday baskets to some of our CVHS families in need.  We are collecting donations of money, canned goods and nonperishable items for CVHS families in need. Donations can be turned in to Ms. Alvarenga in the attendance office. All donations will be distributed prior to Thanksgiving and Winter break.

For more information, contact Ms. Alvarenga.

Rhino bowling

Please join CVHS parents and students at Palace Bowling Lanes, 4191 Bellaire Blvd on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2-4 p.m.

This is an early dismissal day so we have reserved four lanes and obtained a special rate of $13 per bowler for the shoe rental & two hours of bowling.

Please RSVP to Sonu Keneally ([email protected] or 832-567-7668) by Nov. 11 so we know whether to reserve more lanes or not. Teams will be formed as students arrive and parents are welcome to also stay and mingle.

Financial Aid 101

For so many of us who have grown used to the world of tuition-free public schooling, the prospect of filling out financial aid forms as our Rhinos head to college is a daunting one to say the least.

Ms. Chapman and Mr. Frau, however, are coming to the rescue. They will host the CVHS Parent Financial Aid Night in the library Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. They plan to cover all the financial aid topics, including, but not limited to, the CSS profile, FAFSA and institutional and non-institutional scholarships.

Information trumps trepidation any day, and this information from Ms. Chapman and Mr. Frau is designed to do exactly that.

Hope to see you there.

Yearbook ordering time

The 2016 yearbook "Unbroken" is on sale. There is no better way to capture and preserve the year's events and experiences than with the yearbook.

The yearbook can be ordered online at balfour.com, while you can also pay online at schoolpay.com.

Buy an ad for your business or student. Ms. Paget and the yearbook staff can make your ad or assist with any other technical problems.

Cost is $70 per yearbook. Checks made payable to Carnegie Vanguard High School and cash are also accepted, and can be bought to Ms. Paget in the library.

For more information, e-mail her at [email protected].

Sibling applying? Let the office know

The following request is from the CVHS Magnet Coordinator Lamia Moumni.

As we are going through with the application process, we are having some difficulties identifying siblings that apply to CVHS in order to implement the sibling preference. Would it be possible to remind all parents that have already a child going to CVHS to mention it on their application or to directly let the magnet office know so we can properly process their application.

Thank you so much for your help,

Sincerely
Mrs. Moumni

Magnet Tour help needed
A parent perspective is crucial for prospectives

Thursday afternoon magnet tours have begun!  Thank you to the parent volunteers who have come to help so far.
Magnet tours will continue on Thursdays at 1 p.m. through Dec. 3. There are still volunteer slots available.

Tours will include a presentation in the CVHS Theater in the Fine Arts Building followed by student-led tours. Parent volunteers are needed to accompany and assist with these weekly tours. Magnet tours are an excellent opportunity for potential students and their parents to get better acquainted with Carnegie's magnet program and our wonderful CVHS community, and the parent perspective is an important

You may sign up for as few or as many dates as your schedule allows. If you would like to help, click the Magnet Tour Volunteer link here to sign up or for more information.
