PTO News
A message from PTO President Joan Khosla:

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We certainly enjoyed having our college freshman home again for the long weekend.  As he headed back for a busy 2½ weeks of prep and finals, I realized just how quickly time is moving.  CVHS seniors are neck deep in college/scholarship applications, juniors are staring down the SAT, sophomores are realizing they need to start seriously thinking about college planning, and freshman are just trying to catch their breath. We parents are just trying to keep up!

Now, more than ever we need to stay focused. The UIL DEC meeting has been posted. It will be held at the Hattie Mae White Educational Center, 4400 West 18th St., Room 3 West 26 this Thursday, Dec. 3rd, at 7:30 a.m.

I know the time is tough, but I highly encourage anyone who can to sign up and speak to this committee to let them know how wrong it would be to remove UIL sports from CVHS.  So put that turkey leg down, postpone the holiday shopping and once again, step up and fight for CVHS as we tackle our latest battle with those determined to mess with perfection.

Keep Calm and Rhino On!
Joan Khosla
Financial Aid 101

For so many of us who have grown used to the world of tuition-free public schooling, the prospect of filling out financial aid forms as our Rhinos head to college is a daunting one to say the least.

Ms. Chapman and Mr. Frau, however, are coming to the rescue. They will host the CVHS Parent Financial Aid Night in the library Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. They plan to cover all the financial aid topics, including, but not limited to, the CSS profile, FAFSA and institutional and non-institutional scholarships.

Information trumps trepidation any day, and this information from Ms. Chapman and Mr. Frau is designed to do exactly that.

Hope to see you there.

CVHS collecting for good
Contribute to holiday baskets for fellow CVHS families

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to our holiday food basket drive.  Thanks to your generosity, CVHS was able to provide beautiful baskets of food  to seven Rhino families to enjoy over the break.

The school is currently accepting donations for winter break baskets.  Non-perishable foods, gift cards, and cash donations can be given to Ms. Alvarenga in the school office.

For more information, contact Ms. Alvarenga.

Senior Dues
Important info for the Class of 2016

With graduation, prom, and senior trip fast-approaching, it's time to start thinking about dues! Dues are $300 this year and include cap and gown, senior breakfast, diploma, graduation, prom, transportation to senior day activities, senior activities, and senior trip!

Dues should be sent in as soon as possible. They can be made in partial payments or full. Please make out checks to "Carnegie Vanguard High School" and write your child's name in the memo line.

There are three payment plans:
  1. Paid in full up front, with check given to Advocate;
  2. Three months at $100 per month, with checks submitted to Ms. Hernandez; or
  3. Six months at $50 per month, with checks submitted to Ms. Hernandez.
Please also consider donating to the Class of 2016 to sponsor those in need. Just include separate check than that paying for your own student.

If you have any questions, or scholarship requests, please e-mail the Prom Committee

Coming back to school

Calling all CVHS Alumni! Mark your calendars now for the third annual CVHS Alumni Cookies and Cocoa Social at the school Monday, Jan. 4 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

All alumni are invited to come and mix and mingle with all your friends and favorite CVHS teachers and staff. This is the day before students return from winter break, but teachers are working that day and are excited to drink cocoa and see you! This event is free of charge.

RSVP via the Facebook event page here if possible (but not required) so they know how many to plan for. Teachers will be hard at work that day, so please do not arrive any earlier than 2:20 p.m. to respect their time at work. Thanks!

Yearbook ordering time

The 2016 yearbook "Unbroken" is on sale. There is no better way to capture and preserve the year's events and experiences than with the yearbook.

The yearbook can be ordered online at balfour.com, while you can also pay online at schoolpay.com.

Buy an ad for your business or student. Ms. Paget and the yearbook staff can make your ad or assist with any other technical problems.

Cost is $70 per yearbook. Checks made payable to Carnegie Vanguard High School and cash are also accepted, and can be bought to Ms. Paget in the library.

For more information, e-mail her at APAGET@houstonisd.org.

Sibling applying? Let the office know

If you are a current CVHS parent who has a sibling applying for admission for next year, please be sure to indicate that you have a current student on the application. This will allow the magnet office to give sibling preference during the application process.

For more information, e-mail Ms. Moumni at LMOUMNI@houstonisd.org.
