Get your BBQ tickets TODAY!

Join fellow Rhino families and friends at our upcoming BBQ dinner at Karbach Brewing Co. Thursday, Nov. 12. A $25 donation gets you a 9-oz. souvenir glass, four beers, and Officer Fyles' EXCELLENT BBQ and fixings. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow parents, teachers, and friends-of-Rhinos.

Although you must be 21 to attend, you don't need to be a CVHS parent, so invite your friends, neighbors, Uncle Bob, etc. This will be our first social of the year and a great opportunity to mingle with parents and friends. And let's face it, it's way better than mingling over a bag of Doritos and some Dr. Pepper!

Tickets are available here until October 23rd!  A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $35. Reserve your spot today.
New date for school pic retakes

Rhinos who missed picture day in September can still be immortalized in the 2015-16 yearbook.

Re-takes have been re-scheduled for fourth period on Monday, Nov. 2 from 11:15 a.m. to the end of lunch. Seniors will go first then underclassmembers. The latter can have their picture made after 12:45 p.m. See Ms. Paget in the library if you have any questions or e-mail her at [email protected]

Rhinos afield

Carnegie Vanguard's girls cross country, led by senior Kelly Liang (who finished ninth, with a time of 23 minutes, 6 seconds over the 2-mile course), turned in its best-ever performance with a second-place finish with 63 points (to champion Lamar's record-setting 19) at the District 20-6A Cross Country meet. The performance earned the girls team a berth at the upcoming Class 6A-Region III meet on Monday, Oct. 26, at Kate Barr Ross Park in Huntsville.

Meanwhile, the Carnegie volleyball team is finishing out the regular season. Go root on the Rhinos against Chavez at the Pavilion, 7525 Tidwell Road, Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. and vs. Bellaire at Butler Field House, 13755 South Main, Friday, Oct. 30, at 4:30 p.m.

Magnet Tour help needed
A parent perspective is crucial for prospectives

Thursday afternoon magnet tours have begun!  Thank you to the parent volunteers who came last week to help. We had about 150 parents and students visit on the first week, and it was an intense and informative two hours.

Magnet tours will continue on Thursdays at 1 p.m. through Dec. 3. There are still volunteer slots available.

Tours will include a presentation in the CVHS Theater in the Fine Arts Building followed by student-led tours. Parent volunteers are needed to accompany and assist with these weekly tours. Magnet tours are an excellent opportunity for potential students and their parents to get better acquainted with Carnegie's magnet program and our wonderful CVHS community, and the parent perspective is an important

You may sign up for as few or as many dates as your schedule allows. If you would like to help, click the Magnet Tour Volunteer link here to sign up or for more information.

VIPS Registration Required
You MUST register (and possibly re-register) with VIPS

For all of those planning to volunteer this year (and we hope that means all of you), please note that the rules have changed. You must re-up your official HISD VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) registration yearly if you are going to be volunteering on campus. This means, after entering or confirming your personal info online at the VIPS site, taking you license to the school to start the VIPS verification process. Volunteers must have completed the verification process by Oct. 26 to continue volunteering.

There has been a lot of confusion on the license step. License for volunteering is not the same as license for visiting. For visiting, your license is run through RAPTOR, a sex offender database, on the spot. For volunteering, your license is used by HISD for a criminal background check. Unfortunately, if you had not entered your info into VIPS online before you gave your license at the school earlier this year, you will need to repeat the license step, due to rules imposed by HISD.

You can tell by logging in to VIPS if you are "cleared", i.e. finished verification. If you are greeted with a page that says Welcome followed by your name you have finished verification.  If you are greeted by a page that says something along the lines of take your license to the school or some other message other the welcome page you have not finished verification.  The log in page is

VIPS registration is required of all ongoing volunteers. A one time volunteer for a few hours will be processes as a visitor. For more information on VIPS, please consult Ms. Alvarenga, the CVHS VIPS coordinator.

For more information on volunteering, visit the PTO volunteering page here or e-mail Sarah Bittner, 3rd VP - Volunteers and Special Events, at [email protected]
