Message from the Prez

It was great seeing so many new and returning families at open house.  The year is off to a great start and we hope we can count on the same crowd at each PTO general meeting.  We noted the input from parents in our summer survey showed meeting time and content were critical to attendance, so our September 17th meeting will have a new format.  We will have a social time from 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM.  We've invited the freshman teachers to join us and mingle with parents.

The senior class will be selling pizza and drinks, so bring the family!  At 7:00 PM we will take a few minutes to handle any PTO business, then will have presentations from the freshman teachers on expectations. We will also have representatives from the Honors College at U of H joining us to discuss their program. Their topic "The Best of Both Worlds" (referring to small college within a big university) is sure to provide great information for parents.  Rumor has it some CVHS alumni who are in the Honors program will also be available to answer questions. This local, cost friendly program has really shot up nationally in recent years, and lots of CVHS grads are taking note.

We hope you'll join us to hear some great information, and to talk with other Rhino parents.

PTO News
Get involved and stay informed

The school year is off to a fast start, and the PTO has hit the ground running!

Lunch Sales have resumed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Tuesday is Chick-fil-A day, with original and spicy sandwiches available for $3.50.  Thursday features Bahn mi sandwiches, spring rolls, and sticky rice from B-10.  Each item is $3.50.  On Friday we offer pizza for $1.50/slice.  On all three days, chips and granola bars are available for $0.50, and ice cream is sold for $1.50.

Our annual Friends and Family Campaign has raised over $8,000 to date!  This is our largest fundraiser of the year, and it allows us to support clubs and activities, provide supplies and equipment for classrooms, fund school-wide programs, and improve our facilities.  For more information or to make a donation, click here.

Our Student Directory will be published soon.    This is a great resource for students AND parents, and we want to make sure your family is included.  Please take a moment to update your information here.

Want to get involved?  We are always looking for volunteers to help with food sales, staff appreciation, fundraising, beautification, and lots of other tasks.  To find out how you can help, click here.

And finally, take a look at the Quick Links section of this newsletter to your left.  It lists a bunch of great ways to stay informed about what's happening at CVHS.

NHS Blood Drive

The CVHS National Honor Society will host it's first of several Blood Drives on Friday, September 18th.  If you would like to donate, please contact Ms. Alcoriza to set up an appointment time.

Rhinos afield

With the school year beginning, so too are the athletic seasons. Here's a running update of some of the upcoming events:

Volleyball: Carnegie hosts Lamar High School today at 5:45 in the school gym.

Cross country: Practice officially started last week, and all runners old and new must come meet with Ms. Bohenick as soon as possible. Paperwork is already past due. Talk to Ms. Bohenick at school in Room 106 and/or e-mail her at rdavis10@houstonisd.org.

Men's soccer: Tryouts for incoming freshmen and pre-selected sophomores and juniors will begin Monday, Sept. 28. Look for a signup sheet soon. If you have already earned a slot from the spring tryouts, you do not need to sign up. Regular practices will begin Monday, Oct. 12.

Badminton needs you!

A Badminton Club has recently formed at Carnegie, and they need a little help to get going.

They're asking for donations of racquets, shuttlecocks/birdies and/or nets. They do not have to be new as long as they're in fit condition.

If you can help, contact Ms. Alcoriza at aalcoriz@houstonisd.org.
