Message from the Prez
The General Meeting on February 19th featured Susan Morse, author of "The Dog Stays in the Picture: How My Rescued Greyhound Helped me Cope with my Empty Nest." Her talk, reading and subsequent Q and A were very well received. Lucky attendees snapped up a copy of the book along with an autograph and "paw print". She was humorous, warm, personable and honest about her experiences sending one daughter and two twin boys off to college, all different experiences. I am sure many parents cannot wrap their heads around empty nesting. We are all currently wrapped up in our kid's grades, AP classes, extracurriculars, etc. I remember when my son was a toddler and people would say, "You'll blink and he'll be grown." I blinked. If you were not able to attend the meeting, check out Susan's blog here. Her book can be found at all the virtual and tangible booksellers. Please join us for the April 16 general meeting. It will be catered by none other than our very own BBQ Pitmaster Officer Files, so come hungry. We will be honoring all of this year's volunteers, bidding a PTO farewell to the three retiring CVHS teachers (Messrs. Jonas, Swenson and Dewey), and we will be electing new officers for 2015-2016 school year. The general meeting on May 19 will be the ever popular award banquet, more to come on that. Also, seniors, don't forgot to apply for the PTO Scholarship at vanguardian.org!

Revilla among nation's best
Carnegie Vanguard High School Junior Patrick Revilla has been selected as a semifinalist for the USA Physics Olympiad.
Based on their performance in a preliminary exam, 388 students from across the United States were selected. Only 27 students from the state of Texas were selected as semifinalists, and Patrick is the only HISD student who scored high enough to receive an invitation.
The USA Physics Olympiad Exam, sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers, is used as the basis for selection of the 20 members of the U.S. Physics Team. These students, from schools all over the U.S., travel to the University of Maryland-College Park at the end of May for the annual U.S. Physics Team Training Camp. During the camp they engage in 10 days of intense studying, testing, and problem solving.
Congratulations Patrick!

Robotics Texas Champions!
Today Texas, tomorrow the world!
For the fifth year in a row, the CVHS Robotics Club qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship, and this time, Carnegie students will enter the event as the record-setting Texas Champions.
The alliance of the DiscoBots Zeta and Thunder Cloud squads set a new record for the highest VEX Robotics State Tournament score with 104 points this past weekend at Clear Falls High School in League City. Meanwhile, the Stratus squad fell in the semifinals, but their final score was plenty high enough to qualify for Worlds.
And as if those accolades are not enough, the DiscoBots Zeta squad won the prestigious Design Award at state, which by itself would have qualified them for Worlds.
The World Championship Tournament is set for Louisville, Ky. April 15-18. For more on that event, click here. The CVHS teams that participated were:
5678 Thunder Cloud: Sai Adharuprapu (Senior), Jared Lehmann (Senior), and Sam McConnell (Senior).
5678S Stratus: Mika Generao (Freshman), Rachel Tan (Freshman), Meha Mohapatra (Sophomore), Gilbert Martinez (Sophomore), Seth Taylor (Senior)
2587Z DiscoBots Zeta: Senior Andrew Nagal's VEX team whose members include: Peter Dulworth (homeschooled), Cyrus Shy (homeschooled) and Zak Ahmed (Galveston Ball High School).
At the end of qualifications at the state meet, Thunder Cloud was ranked 17th, Stratus ranked 36th, and DiscoBots Zeta remained the only undefeated team and ranked first.

30-Hour Famine lock-in Feb. 27 and 28 Chaperones needed
The Carnegie chapter of the National Honor Society will once again host the 30 Hour Famine locked-in event. This year, it's going to be Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.
The NHS is looking for parents willing to volunteer their time to chaperone the kids during the evening of Friday, Feb. 27. They don't need to spend the night at Carnegie if they're not able. Whatever time they're able to spend as chaperone would be much appreciated.
For more information, visit www.30hourfamine.org and/or e-mail Ms. Alcoriza at aalcoriz@houstonisd.org (especially if you wish to chaperone as she needs a head count).

Rhinos at play March 3
School-wide field trip to Hermann Park/Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo is about to get an influx of rhinos. No new habitat will have to built (yet), as this looks to b a one-day event.
In recognition of the students' hard work all year long, the school will be taking all students on a field trip to Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo Tuesday, March 3. Credit where it's due: The idea originated with Mr. Garner and the Student Council, so a big thanks to them.
Students should bring a lunch. Of course, there are restaurants in the area (inside the Museum of Natural Science, in the Zoo, etc.), but they can be expensive and very slow to serve people. The admission to the Zoo for the day will be free. Students may bring a ball or other item to play out on the grass outside the zoo.
