Author Susan Morse to speak at next PTO meeting

The next PTO meeting will feature author Susan Morse, author of the memoir "The Dog Stays in the Picture," about life at home after kids leave for college, and "The Habit," about her relationship with her aging mother. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19.

Here's a rundown of Morse's "The Dog Stays in the Picture" from the publisher:

If you're nervous about what life will be like once your graduating seniors leave for college, you are not alone. With a daughter in college, two boys wrapping up their senior year of high school, and an actor husband who was frequently on the road, writer Susan Morse was uncertain of how she would spend her days once September rolled around.  In her new memoir "The Dog Stays in the Picture," Susan details her journey from busy mom to empty nester, and how adopting a retired racing greyhound named Lilly helped Susan to better navigate this transition.

A graduate of Williams College, Susan began her career as an actress in LA and New York, before settling down in Philadelphia with her husband, actor David Morse. "The Dog Stays in the Picture" is Susan's second memoir.

Sounds right up our alley! Hope to see everyone out there.

We're happy if you can drop off a dish, or help with setup or cleanup.  All are welcome to stay and visit with teachers and staff.

Note: Please do not bring any dishes or utensils that you want returned to you unless you plan to stay through the breakfast.  We have plenty of serving utensils.

Ranking season starts early
Carnegie tops yet another list

CVHS LogoNational and local high school rankings generally don't come out until April and May, but in one early poll, Carnegie ranked among the best in the nation.

U.S. News and World Report listed Carnegie No. 1 in the Houston area in college readiness, No. 3 in Texas and No. 23 in these here United States.

For a full reporting, check out the list here and the Houston Chronicle story here, where you can see Carnegie and the Houston area schools that finished behind Carnegie (aka "all other Houston schools").

Well done to the Carnegie students, teachers and staff!

This thing, that thing and some stuff
Getting your student to improve their word usage

Carnegie parent Alice Savage, an ESL text book writer and instructor at Lone Star College, and her co-writer Colin Ward have penned an eloquent essay specifically focusing on getting students to broaden their usage of language, and in so doing drop certain "RIP" words like "thing" and "stuff" and "good" and "bad."

For those of us in a constant tug of wills with our students on this and similar issues, the essay provides multiple helpful hints on how our students can be encouraged to show their natural intelligence in word usage. It's worth your time to give it a look here.

World Premiere Festival Friday

Carnegie Theatre 2 students will stage their World Premiere Festival of 10-minute plays they themselves have written and directed at the Carnegie Theatre in the Settegast Building starting a 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.

Admission is a free, which is a bargain as this is an evening that never disappoints.
Sports schedules
Rhinos go for the wins

The Carnegie women's and men's soccer teams take on squads from the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice at Mason Park fields starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. The teams will also take on Eastwood at Gregory-Lincoln 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Also, the women's rugby squad had their first tournament in Dallas last Saturday. Ms. Davis reported the following results:

Congratulations to the girls' rugby team, who competed in the first tournament of the year. Of their games, they managed the first win of the year against St. Pius and had several other hard-fought matches, including a close game against a strong side from The Woodlands. Veterans Maddie Castator and Aishat Sadiq led the scoring drives in that match, and rookies Nikki Schepp and Arlene Taylor each scored in the win over St. Pius. Despite several injuries and playing short, the girls put up a great fight. Rookie of the match award goes to Nikki Schepp and MVP to captain Jennifer Flores for playing tirelessly and with great spirit. Honorable mentions to captain Evelyn Staley, and rookies Arlene Taylor and Dasha Pominov.

There will be a tournament in Houston Feb. 21, but the location is still TBA. E-mail Ms. Davis at rdavis10@houstonisd.org to find out more about the squad's schedule.

Also, the Rhino baseball team has started practice, and will have its first scrimmage at Madison High School, Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 4:30 p.m.

Come out and support your Rhinos.

30-Hour Famine lock-in Feb. 27 and 28
Chaperones needed

The Carnegie chapter of the National Honor Society  will once again host the 30 Hour Famine locked-in event.  This year, it's going to be Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.

The NHS is looking for parents willing to volunteer their time to chaperone the kids during the evening of Friday, Feb. 27.  They don't need to spend the night at Carnegie if they're not able. Whatever time they're able to spend as chaperone would be much appreciated.

For more information, visit www.30hourfamine.org and/or e-mail Ms. Alcoriza at aalcoriz@houstonisd.org (especially if you wish to chaperone as she needs a head count).

Rhinos at play March 3
School-wide field trip to Hermann Park/Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo is about to get an influx of rhinos. No new habitat will have to built (yet), as this looks to b a one-day event.

In recognition of the students' hard work all year long, the school will be taking all students on a field trip to Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo Tuesday, March 3. Credit where it's due: The idea originated with Mr. Garner and the Student Council, so a big thanks to them.

Students should bring a lunch. Of course, there are restaurants in the area (inside the Museum of Natural Science, in the Zoo, etc.), but they can be expensive and very slow to serve people. The admission to the Zoo for the day will be free.

Students may bring a ball or other item to play out on the grass outside the zoo.

For more information, contact Ms. Matsu at mmatsu@houstonisd.org and/or Mr. Garner at jgarner@houstonisd.org.

Rhinos in the community

Graduation is not all about the glory of finishing high school, but also about the commitment that one has to the community as you progress into your adult life. Carnegie ensures this lesson with a requirement of community service hours before graduation. Each student must complete one hundred hours of community service and document them in the appropriate forms found in the counseling office. Any service that a student has performed between 9th and 12th grade (including service completed during the summer before 9th grade) can be counted towards their hours.

The activities are not limited to school-organized service events. The one hundred hours can come from anything a student decides to participate in which benefits the community. Activities range from volunteering at the Houston Children's Museum to tours at Carnegie for prospective parents and students. Anthony Obi, who was a member of the 2005-2006 senior class, volunteers at his church by helping out around the building and assisting those in need of a few extra hands.

From National Honor Society projects to local religious activities, participation in many types of community service projects are encouraged for CVHS students to meet this important graduation requirement. With one hundred hours as a necessary achievement, the diversity among student participation is great at Carnegie.

The community service reporting form can be found at: http://www.houstonisd.org/Page/93829.

This spring, the CVHS PTO will award up to $2,500 in scholarships to members of the Carnegie Vanguard High School Class of 2015. Seeking to honor individuals who best represent the spirit of CVHS, both inside and outside the classroom, the PTO encourages ALL Carnegie seniors to apply.

The deadline to apply is April 10. The scholarship form can be found at vanguardian.org.

If you are an Naviance, then you should have gotten the following information from Ms. Chapman. And if not, then it would be a good idea to sign up for that right now while you're thinking of it. Here's what Ms. Chapman wrote:

The NACAC National College Fair will be coming to Houston on Thursday, Feb. 12,  at NRG Center. There will be two sessions: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. CVHS will take all 11th grade students to the fair during the day time session. Juniors will receive their permission slip sometime next week. Parents are needed to chaperone the trip so please register as a VIPS (Volunteer in Public Schools) and email Mrs. Guidry at bguidry@houstonisd.org if you'd like to volunteer.

All juniors are required to register for the fair at www.gotomyncf.com. A list of colleges that will be in attendance will also be available on the site.

February 12th will also be a designated College Preparation Day for all 11th grade students. In addition to attending the National College Fair, current 11th graders will review their transcripts, log in and review their online SAT Course, sign up for the In School SAT scheduled for April 15, research colleges, and add perspective colleges to Naviance.

Prior to February 12, all 11th grade students must:
  • Ensure access to their College Board account;
  • Ensure access to Naviance;
  • Sign up for the college fair (www.gotomyncf.com)
  • Have a fully charged Power Up Laptop

Parents who wish to receive emails regarding college preparation, should be registered for Naviance using their own individual account. Parents who do not have access to Naviance should email Mrs. Chapman at vchapman@houstonisd.org to get their access information.

A College Planning Night for the parents of juniors will be scheduled for an evening in March or April. Please register with Naviance so you get the most up to date information.

Yearbooks are for sale

Yearbooks for 2014-15 are now available for order at www.balfour com. Price is once again $65.

The staff is also selling ads in the yearbook. Ad layouts are available on the Balfour link, and you can create your own ad online. If you need technical assistance, the yearbook staff can help you create your ad by scanning in photos, doing the layout or typing in text.

The yearbook is a self-sustaining entity, so it relies very much on ad revenue and sales. Ads pay for yearbook supplies, cameras and yearbook camp. If you have a senior, this is a great opportunity to recognize her and/or his four years of hard work at Carnegie before they head off to college.

Yearbooks may also be purchased in the library by cash or check. Another option is to pay half now and half by Feb. 15. Lots of choices!

For more information, e-mail Ms. Paget at apaget@houstonisd.org.
