Seeds of SE Uplift: Volunteer Spotlight
|
Our volunteer appreciation program is called Seeds of Southeast Uplift. Learn about Chana Andler and Eastside Village PDX. It will be the first aging-in-place "Village" in the Portland metro area. The village will not be a place. It will be a network of volunteer and reduced-cost professional services which will enable residents of 12 southeast Portland neighborhoods to grow old in the homes they love.
Participate in an upcoming free event It Takes A Village on Saturday, June 15th. Visit Eastside Village PDX for all the details. Take their survey to share your ideas. This project is made possible in part through grant funding from the City of Portland and SE Uplift's Neighborhood Small Grants Program.
Ms. Andler is the co-founder and the Chair, Eastside Village PDX Planning Group. She answers questions from SE Uplift about her volunteer work and Eastside Village PDX.
SE Uplift: What was your inspiration for Eastside Village PDX?Chana: When my husband Richie and I moved back to Portland in 2008, we were surprised to discover there were no aging-in-place Villages, like Beacon Hill Village in Boston, already open (or even in development) here in Portland. This seemed strange to us because Portland is very neighborly and neighborhood-centric, so it's a logical place for there to be Village. SE Uplift: What advice would you give to others trying to organize a similar effort?Chana: You don't need to re-invent the wheel. We have lots of information and resources to share with you and will be glad to help you begin to do informational presentations and coalesce a planning group in your part of the Portland metro area. Contact us at info@eastsidevillage.org. SE Uplift: Why is volunteering important to you?Chana: There is a Marian Wright Edelman quote that captures how my husband and I both feel about volunteering: "Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time." Volunteering, along with philanthropy, is the way we forward the progress of those causes.

New Roof in the Works for Laurelhurst School |
Portland Public Schools is letting the community know that they will begin tearing off the old roof and installing a new one at Laurelhurst School in mid-June.
PPS aims to complete this large project by the start of 2013/14 school year, and plans to request a waiver from the City of Portland which would allow work to go on beyond the normal construction work hours of 7AM to 6PM if needed to complete the project before school begins. If the request is approved, construction could occur between 6AM to 10PM. PPS will limit the majority of the noise caused by construction to during the regular work day and use the extended hours for less-noisy work.
PPS apologizes in advance for any inconvenience.
