Greetings!

In lieu of National Financial Literacy Month and Earth Day, in this edition of the St. Ambrose Newsletter we're celebrating the success of our brand new financial empowerment workshop series and energy upgrades in our rental units.

Financial Empowerment Workshops

A new workshop focuses on investing in the future

The Foreclosure Prevention department works diligently to help homeowners who are at risk of foreclosure create an action plan to find the best solution to their home-ownership hardships. Recently our Foreclosure Counselors expanded their impact by using their expertise in financial education to empower clients to invest responsibly in their future. The new 5-week financial course, which focused on coaching rather than counseling, culminated in a celebration last night. The  supportive companionship amongst the participants was clearly visible as they congratulated each other for completing the course and working towards short and long term goals. Participants had varied financial goals, but shared a desire to make empowering financial decisions for the future. They all agreed that discussing their goals with others was helpful in keeping focused to achieve their goals.

Energy Upgrades for our Rental Homes
Over five years ago, the Rental Services department embarked on a plan to upgrade our portfolio of rental homes to improve energy efficiency. We've collaborated with Baltimore City's Office of Weatherization, Civic Works, the Maryland Energy Administration, and BG&E to work towards reducing our tenants' utility bills and reducing our environmental footprint.
A few of the greening efforts we have taken so far are installing Energy Star appliances, heating systems, and light fixtures; weatherization measures like improving insulation and air sealing; and installing energy efficient doors and windows. The energy upgrades at the Buena Vista Apartments on Union Avenue are estimated to reduce energy consumption by at least 24%!
You can do it too!

Check out the Baltimore Housing Division of Green, Healthy and Sustainable Homes or Civic Works Retrofit Baltimore to learn how you can make your home more energy efficient and to see if you could qualify for assistance to do so.

Talk to St. Ambrose: the Blog
The St. Ambrose staff attorneys created a list of 10 things to do if you're slipping towards Foreclosure. The #1 piece of advice?

"Ask for help as soon as you realize you are in financial trouble. The sooner you ask, the more likely you are to get the necessary support to resolve the problem."
