Lakia Diggs is a mother and hairstylist at Mera Mirror The Salon in Belair-Edison. She has a Facebook page in which she post jokes and memes, and then watches it go viral. An idea hit her, what if she shared a "worthy cause"? Would it too go viral?
"I want her to know that she may never know what situation she may be in. Our issues are so miniscule compared to others. We are blessed, so we are paying it forward."
Paying it forward, Lakia set up a Facebook Event and called to her friends to send in supplies for a back to school drive. She dared them to share with others the same way that they would share information about a party. And then the supplies came; pencils, pens, notepads, erasers, uniforms, and backpacks. She describes her living room, with a laugh, as, "a small Staples Store."
She called around looking for places to donate the backpacks filled with supplies and came across St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center. She had heard of St. Ambrose from a friend of a friend who used them for a resource and spoke highly of the organization. The mother and daughter team came to St. Ambrose to donate the backpacks on August 19th, which is a special day for Sanyia. She has decided to celebrate her birthday by helping 30 Baltimore City students have a great school year.
