Heavy Drinker Gets Off

A man in southern Sweden beat a DUI charge in February even though his blood-alcohol was five times over the legal limit. He told the judge that he a heavy drinker and normally starts drinking before work every day, with "no effect" on his performance. That must have impressed the judge, who tossed out the charge.

Greetings!

Mitchell is predicting a rise in the average industry cost to repair auto collision damage. I must hasten to add this prediction deals with the cost of purchasing repair services, not necessarily a new cost increase for those repairing them.

There are a couple of different reasons for this, according to Mitchell. First off, materials prices are rising, because paint mica, chemicals, plastics and steel prices are all rising. I know from talking to many of you that you're already feeling the pinch on the price you pay for refinish materials.

Another factor is the softening of salvage values. This is leading to more of the borderline vehicles marked "repairable" rather than "total loss."

You can read more about the Mitchell predictions here.

AYCE pre-apprenticeship event promotes collision careers

By Mike Davey

Mohammed Baruwara is a graduate of the pre-apprenticeship program, currently working towards his Level 3. He gives the program credit for helping him to find a direction for his life.
A special pre-apprenticeship event held at Toronto's Metro Hall has helped to promote the message that there are successful careers to be made in the skilled trades. The event was put on by AYCE Employment Services and the City of Toronto. AYCE is a division of Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto based multi-service organization.

There were 11 trades represented, with the Autobody and Collision Damage Repairer pre-apprenticeship track garnering significant interest from the more than 45 students and youth in attendance.

"For the people who are here today to apply for the program, it could be the beginning of a bright and prosperous career," said Marc Tremblay, Co-Ordinator of the Autobody and Collision Damage Repairer Pre-apprenticeship Program for AYCE. "We've had an 80 per cent success rate over the last three years from the program."

Mitchell webinar reveals jump in comprehensive losses

By Andrew Ardizzi

Mitchell's Canada-specific Industry Trends Report Q1 2013 Wrap-up (Canada) covers the latest efficiency reports from within the collision repair industry, Volkswagen's potential expansion into a thirteenth brand and GM's HFO-1234yf refrigerant.

The webinar was conducted by Greg Horn, Mitchell's Vice President, Industry Relations and Editor-in-Chief of the Industry Trend Report. Horn says the collision repair industry is not seeing a softening of the actual cash value (ACV) for all loss types of the vehicles being appraised, while the appraisals in the fourth quarter of 2012 were nearly $3,500, with an ACV of  nearly $14,000. This is up nearly $200 from the third quarter.

Horn also says we're seeing a similar trend on the collision repair side, with the average ACV on collision losses jumping nearly $200 to $13,942 from the third quarter, while comprehensive losses rocketed up nearly $300 between the third and fourth quarters. The cost of appraisals also increased by nearly $600.
