When it comes to tapping, coolant and the lack thereof can limit tool life and productivity. Creating an internal thread in metal parts generates considerable heat due to friction. That heat can cause the material that is being threaded to weld to the cutting edge of the tap and produce oversize holes and also lead to tap breakage. Coolant used in tapping operations will ideally have a higher oil concentration for lubricity which will reduce material build up on the tap. Some tapping operations are done by hand or on manual equipment and the coolant or tapping fluid is actually applied by hand.
Guhring developed a self-lubrication coating called MolyGlide that is being successfully applied to cobalt taps to increase tool life and improve thread quality. MolyGlide is a Molybdenum Disulfide based coating that acts like Teflon® in that material will not adhere to it. MolyGlide coatings lubricate sacrificially by transferring lubricant between the two mating surfaces, which helps to reduce wear and coefficient of friction. When applied to a cutting tool, MolyGlide prevents built up material on the cutting edge. When applied to a tap that is being used in materials prone to chip welding, such as steel and aluminum, MolyGlide can increase tool life by 20-30% or more.
