Ask for a Time Out

If the discussion you're having with the other person gets heated and you notice things getting out of hand, it's okay to ask for a break.

Make sure to say how much time you need so the other person knows that you want to continue talking.

Also say how it will benefit you and the other person to stop and take a time out.

"I'm feeling frustrated right now.  Could we take a break and talk again in about 5 or 10 minutes?  This is obviously an important issue to both of us.  I want just a little time to clear my head so we have a better chance of finding a solution together."
