Has the Riviera Beach City Council ever said "no" to any developer on Singer Island? Despite all the development on Singer Island during the past few years, property taxes continue to rise and the Council continues to spend.... IT MUST BE STOPPED

[ Editor's Note:  NB - sorry for leaving this out of last week's edition!  There was an interesting 95 minute discussion on Single District Voting at this week's City Council Meeting. If you are a resident of Riviera Beach, I'd strongly urge you to get the popcorn out and play this link and PLEASE don't miss the public comments - here.

A few SICA team members had the following comments:

--Riviera Beach City council members don't just vote on issues affecting a single district--their votes affect every resident of the city, and we should all have a voice--and a vote--in electing them.

--Riviera Beach is small enough that we can see all of our elected officials in action, and determine whether or not we agree with their beliefs and positions in governing the city.

--We would not support a proposal that would disenfranchise the voice and vote of any Riviera Beach citizens in electing their city council.

--A single member district approach could lead to a fragmented, adversarial environment within the city council. Instead, council persons should be incented to work together on cross-city issues rather than advocating for a single group of constituents.

 - if you have comments, ideas, hopefully positive solutions to helping the Island and surrounding commUNITY move forward, send them in and they will be shared here next week!   ]

[ Editor's note: Thank you for sending in your comments! There is certainly a lot going on around our wonderful little Island.  Please keep sending in your comments, scoop, ideas and news to be shared here with over 2195 of your neighbors.  Your Singer Island Civic Association WILL stay on these issues ]

Saturday Sept 27th Clean-up Report from the Marriott Resort Team on Singer Island:  With a great deal of pride, we announce that our resort participated in our first International Coastal Cleanup Day!

This is the 29th Annual International Coastal Cleanup and last year, a total of 650,000 people picked up more than 12 million pounds of trash worldwide.  We did our part today by picking up a total of 85 pounds of trash in our beach.  As always, we split into two teams, the Southern Team and the Northern Team.  It just so happens that our team captains went along gender lines and the Northern Team was made up of all boys while the Southern Team was made up of all girls.

The girls won with a total of 50 pounds collected while the boys came in with 35 pounds of trash.  I'm not proud to say this but the boys got spanked!

Congratulations to the Southern Team and remember, we do this every last Saturday of the month at 8am at the Reef...

[ Editor's note:  Thank you to the Marriott Resort Team for taking the lead in helping keep our beach clean and making it a fun event along the way! and yes ..the guys got spanked.   As a 15 year fulltime resident, I have noticed a significant reduction in trash on the beach from the Martinique II down to the Tiara ....and would like to thank everyone for their continued efforts!  I'd also like to challenge more residents to stop in for the next clean-up, its a fun little 45 minute walk on the beach!  We will keep showcasing this monthly event (and other similar events taking place in our community!) ]
