District Update From Dawn S. Pardo, Council Chair Pro-Tem, District 4
[ Editor's note: This information is reprinted/abbreviated from last week's 8/22 update, to point out some very important items that neighbors/readers keep asking about ...please read carefully...there will be a quiz below! ]
Ocean Mall Update - On last Wednesday afternoon, I met with a representative from GFS, the investment group that currently holds the Ocean Mall lease. The following progress has been made since my last meeting:
Pressure cleaning, graffiti removal, window coverings and landscaping have occurred on the Mall property.
GFS has hired a full time onsite maintenance team to manage the property. They will be on site from 7 am - 4pm, daily.
GFS has recently received 20 inquiries from possible tenants and they are currently negotiating several new leases.
In the next week, GFS will file for a permit to begin construction on the old 7-Eleven site. Per the agreement with the City, GFS must construct the building by June 2015.
Most importantly, GFS is negotiating the sale of the lease with a former Singer Island resident who is a real estate developer/investor in NYC.
The CRA continues to survey possible Police sub station sites.
The Clean & Safe Ambassador Program has been implemented. Men and women in bright green shirts are now deployed around the CRA area including throughout the Mall and along the Bridge. Their duties include reporting suspicious activity to police, escorting patrons to their cars and maintaining CRA property.
[ Editor's note: Please welcome our Ambassadors as they ready the ground for more activity at our mall this fall. The program is currently looking for volunteer ambassadors. Neimah Spence is the Clean & Safe program's operations director. His email for contact/suggestions: NSpence@RBCRA.com. The park (and sand lot) to the east of ocean mall is managed by Parks & Recs (not the CRA) - if you see items (trash, safety issues, etc.) that need to be addressed or if you have suggestions for improvements, please contact: parksandrec@rivierabch.com (and copy us on the messages so they can be shared here next week). ]
CommUNITY Voice:
Neighbors, PLEASE send in your comments, ideas and input ...to be shared here next week!
From: Fred G @ the Tiara
Subject: I visited the mall this past week!
The mall looked worse than I can remember. i.e. ice cream store, bagel store closed! Where is the 375 million being spent for Singer Island? Where is the police sub station? It is a disgrace for Singer Island and if nothing is done to fix it the residents of the Island will pay for it! Can some one with some authority answer my e-mail!
[ Editor's note: Thank you Fred! Per the update above, change is finally upon us and there IS progress starting to take shape at our ocean mall. We've all got to stay on this issue to keep the inertia building. It would be GREAT if an island full of neighbors show up at the Sept. 18th tear down (see events section below) to show their support and help keep pressure for continued progress: Sept 18th @ 5pm - Please save the date!! ]
Which brings us to the Quiz that was mentioned above:
Singer Island Neighbors, PLEASE send us your input about what types of businesses that you would like to see (and that you would frequent/support) at Ocean Mall. It's important that as the mall is leased out with new stores, that they are a good fit for both locals and visitors, so they can flourish. Your input will be shared with key contacts ...and your voice will be heard!
Here is one idea (let's hear yours!): Is anyone interested in a trolley pick-up ... Maybe a route Loop: Along N. Ocean Drive to Ocean Mall. What are your thoughts (and other ideas)????
The Time is now neighbors - please send us your Ocean Mall input and business suggestions!!
