Stock Market Irrelevance

by Alfred Adask

After WWII, Americans increasingly invested in the stock markets.  As a result, the American people came to view the stock market indices (DOW, S&P 500, NYSE, etc.) as reliable indicators of our nation's economic strength.

However, the Dow Jones fell 50% in the first 18 months after the onset of the Great Recession of A.D. 2008.  This fall destroyed so much paper wealth and so much of the average American's confidence in stocks, that large numbers of ordinary Americans began to drop out of the stock market.

Several recent news reports verify this withdrawal and suggest some intriguing questions:

*  First, The Washington Times ("Fed: Under Obama, only the richest 10 percent saw incomes rise") reports that,

"Under President Obama, the richest 10 percent were the only income group of Americans to see their median incomes rise, according to a survey released this week by the Federal Reserve."

It seems surprising, even strange, that the Federal Reserve would issue a report that (as you'll read) would be so critical towards President Obama.  This public criticism suggests that there might be a secret but yet significant adversity between the Federal Reserve and President Obama.

"The Fed data covered the years 2010-2013, during which period Mr. Obama constantly campaigned against income inequality andwon re-election by painting his Republican rival as a tool of Wall Street plutocrats."

No doubt that Republican Party leaders are the tools of the Wall Street plutocrats.

The questions, however are:  1) is Obama is also a plutocratic "tool"?;  and/or 2) are Democrat Party leaders also plutocratic "tools"?

I'm no fan of Obama, but I doubt that it's fair to blame Obama for the rising income of the rich.  I believe it's probably more reasonable to place primary blame for income disparity on the Congress-including both Republicans and Democrats who compete for the plutocrats' favor and political-campaign-contributions/bribes.

Obama may or may not be secretly favoring the rich.  But, even if he is, I doubt that Obama, by himself, could cause the kind of legislation and economic conditions that so favor the rich.  Obama may contribute to the problem, but the primary cause of the problem is the laws that allow Congress to legally accept bribes from the rich under the guise of political campaign contributions.

"'Data from the 2013 Survey of Consumer Finances ["SCF"] confirm that the shares of income and wealth held by affluent families are at modern historically high levels,' the report said in noting that the median income fell for every 10-percent grouping except the most affluent 10 percent

"The 2010-2013 SCF found that even though real gross domestic product [allegedly] grew by 2.1 percent and civilian unemployment [allegedly] fell from 9.9 percent to 7.5 percent, only families at 'the very top of the income distribution saw widespread income gains,' . . . .

"The report comes just a week after AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said the union group would not endorse any more Democrats that followed President Obama's economic policy."

If only the rich are getting richer and the middle class are ceasing to exist and poor are getting poorer, who do you suppose is investing in the stock markets?

The poor never invested in the stock markets.  The middle class used to invest until many of them lost 50% of their savings after A.D. 2008.  So, the only people who might tend to invest in the stock markets are the rich.

Other than that, stock market investors must be increasingly composed of major financial institutions.

Insofar as investments by people in stocks are diminishing, can the stock markets still function as a reliable measure of the strength of the US economy?

*  Second, ZeroHedge.com ("What's The Point Of Hiding It Any Longer?") reports that according to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's (CME's) A.D. 2012 10-Kannual report, the CME's "customer base includes professional traders, financial institutions, institutional and individual investors, major corporations, manufacturers, producers and governments."

One year later, the CME revised their A.D.2013 10-Kannualreport to say that their "customer base includes professional traders, financial institutions, institutional and individual investors, major corporations, manufacturers, producers, governments and central banks."

Thus, central banks (not only the Federal Reserve, but also foreign central banks like the ECB, etc.) are now openly participating in, and arguably manipulating the prices of stocks and commodities.

Think about that.

What would the central banks' primary interest be in manipulating US markets?

Well, what's the primary product for all central banks?

A:  Fiat currencies.

What's a primary threat to current fiat currencies' survival?

A:  The price of gold. (I.e., if the price of gold is high, confidence in fiat currencies is low.)

It follows that the principle enemy of the prices of physical gold and silver must be the world's central banks.  Not Wall Street.  Wall Street may act on behalf of the world's central banks to suppress the price of gold-but gold's primary adversary must be the world's central banks, acting in concert to sustain fiat currencies by suppressing the prices of physical gold and silver.

*  ZeroHedge.com has also alleged that "Cluster of Central Banks have Secretly Invested $27 Trillion in the Market".

ZeroHedge also asks,

". . . why even pretend there is a "market"?  Within the "market" (and by "market" we mean stocks) it has long been known that central banks actively trade bonds, FX and commodities-and market prices are whatever central banks say they are."

This is more evidence that: 1) our allegedly "free markets" are actually rigged; 2) the major investors are financial institutions; and 3) public participation in the markets by real people is decreasing.

Insofar as the markets are rigged and public participation is diminishing, can stock market indices still be regarded as accurate indicators of our economy's strength and future?  If not, are stock market indices still relevant to the average American?

ZeroHedge.com also reported ("CNBC Viewership Plunges To 21 Year Lows") that:

"It's over: whether due to the complete domination of centrally-planned markets by a few central banks, whether as a result of High Frequency Trading computers forcing out all human traders and investors, whether due to volatility plunging to record lows and complacency at record highs, whether viewers simply aren't impressed by the new young, female faces that are increasingly taking over the primetime financial TV slots, because people are tired of Cramer's endless "caffeine" high and endless attempts to justify arecord disconnect between manipulated record-high "markets" and a stagnant economy in which some 53 million workers are "freelancers," or simply because video game consoles don't watch TV-America's interest with finance and the stock market is over."

ZeroHedge implies that there is no longer a compelling reason for most Americans to invest in rigged stock markets or to even pay much attention to rigged stock market indices.  These rigged indices may reveal quite a lot of information for or about the wealthiest Americans who invest in stocks-but those same indices may be increasingly irrelevant to most Americans.

Which raises several additional questions:

  1. If the Public has lost interest in stock market indices and isn't buying most of the stocks on the stock market, who is?  (A:  Financial institutions subsidized by the central banks.)
  2. If the public has lost interest in stocks and the public isn't buying most of the stocks being sold, how much longer will the public continue to believe that the stock market indexes are a reliable indicator of the US economy's strength?  (A:  Who can say?  But probably not much longer.)
  3. If the majority of people stop placing much value on the stock market indexes, what new economic indicators could take the place of the stock markets-any?  (A:  I can't imagine a new-and-improved economic indicator that the public would regard with any confidence.)
  4. If the current stock market indices are losing their power of manipulate public opinion concerning the economy, and if no new indices are available to replace them, are the gov-co and Federal Reserve nearing a time when they'll have no more illusions able to control public opinion of the economy?  (A:  Yes.  The "little man" may soon be forced out from behind the "curtain".)
  5. Are we heading toward a moment when the government loses the means to lie effectively about our economy?  Are we headed towards a moment of truth?  (A:  I don't expect that every bit of knowledge about the economy will ever be easily discovered by the American people.  But I believe that we may be near to a time when much of what is currently concealed will be exposed to the public.)
  6. Can the current government survive if it's forced to tell the truth?  (A:  Probably not.)

Insofar as to stock market indices (DOW, S&P 500, NYSE, etc.) become increasingly irrelevant to the public and lose their capacity to influence public opinion, the government itself will suffer a loss of credibility and power.  That loss should contribute to greater political instability and polarization in the American body politic.

Terrorism isn't the problem...Islam is

Is there ever a time we will get sick of the word and political games regarding our treatment with Islam? "It is a religion of peace" as former President Bush, reminded us again and again after 9-11. Sorry Bush but you were wrong. As the current Islamic murderers wipe out everyone in site in Iraq and Syria, President Obama is quick to remind us in his latest inspired speech... "ISIL is not Islamic." Apparently according to Obama all the groups who torture, behead and murder others are terrorists, hiding perhaps in Islam but not reflective of Islam at all.

The only problem with this endless 'peace' propaganda about Islam is that it reflects only the dementia, intimidation and lies of the person speaking.

Obama talks about 'routing out militants' from ISIS. The tragic and deadly truth is that there are no good guys or bad guys in Islam or routing out anything. Rather, there are over 1.5 billion in this family, who believe in the words and holy books of Islam that reflect the teachings of Muhammad and Allah. The Koran, Hadith and Sharia law reflect the skeletal core of their belief system and how they live their lives.

Regardless of who fires the gun or cuts the head off, all are guilty who dare believe what the Koran says and how they are to relate to the 'infidels.' According to their own statements the last half of the Koran trumps and dominates the earlier more peaceful type writings of the first half.

So, what does just a little look at the last half of the Koran reveal to us? Chapter 9: We have 3 choices: 1) Forcibly convert to Islam 2) Submit to their Mafia like tax just to stay alive, making sure we are humiliated, or 3) be killed.

The Koran is not a book for terrorists but for anyone who believes in Muhammad and Allah. Any group, Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, Hesbolla, Al Kae Da, ISIS, Taliban on and on the brand names go...following the literal teachings of Muhammad and the Koran, will either kill, torture and enslave people of difference. The rest will support, fund and pray for their 'hero' killers in their various organizations. None of this is good for Americans who want to stay alive and experience freedom.

As Robert Spence of Jihad Watch said ages ago that some Islamics are committed to either' silent jihad' or 'violent jihad.'

If the stated goal of Islam per their own holy books is to subjugate, enslave, convert or murder the rest of us, how does Obama magically disconnect Islam from all this? Do Muslims who say they want peace expect anyone to believe them when those Islamics who lash out against us infidels are only following the vision and mission of Muhammad per the Koran?

200 Members of ISIS are just over the Mexican Border - Confirmed

BY ADMIN,  LAURIE ROTH, ON SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2014

The anniversary and horror memories of 9/11 are in our face again and so is ISIS. They are boldly crafting ways with Mexican drug cartels to get across the border to the U.S. and attack us now.

This week Judicial watch exposed that ISIS was hanging out in Ciudad Juarez and planning attacks on us. This was confirmed on my show this week with Frank Salvato the editor and publisher of www.newmediajournal.us.

Frank stated that unnamed high up military sources confirmed that 200 ISIS members were working with drug cartels to get across at Ciudad Juarez and planning attacks on the U.S. He said that the military knows exactly where they are and are watching them.

I asked Frank, if this is confirmed and a major attack is in the works, and 9/11 is here why haven't we done a pre emptive strike on them and got the Mexican Government to do the same before the big hit happens...again?

What is the real equation here people? Is it politically incorrect and rude to the Mexican Government or even an act of war if we do a pre-emptive strike and take out the 200 ISIS members before they take down a plane, attack a Mall or blow up Houston? Why wait anymore? How is this not treasonous and criminal already to know where the 200 ISIS Islamic killers are and do nothing but watch as they plan? Popcorn anyone?

Obama has already shown us his policy with ISIS in Iraq and Syria...watch, wait, and remind the American people he doesn't have a policy yet. Only recently, when the heat from the Pentagon and media was too hot did Obama pull a 3-year military plan out of his 'golf ball' pocket to actually look like he cared. Before this however, in the 'no plan for ISIS stage', Obama knew and watched ISIS commit genocide against Christians, behead several American journalists, burry women and children alive, behead babies and post their heads on sticks - and for desert, a 5 year old was sawed in half. How can we forget Obama responding briefly to the last beheading, then quickly going back to his golf game? If that doesn't tick you royally off you must be dead already.

As a US citizen I demand action from our military and President to take out the confirmed 200 ISIS members we know are planning major attacks and NOW. Everyone spread the word far and wide on this and put pressure on your leaders, Representatives and Senators.

If our blood is intended to flow over the next few days because of more inaction or 'way too late' action...let it start with the blood of our leaders careers from the White House on down. This is treason to know this, confirm this and do nothing.

IN THE NEWS......

"The main immediate effect is likely to be uncertainty over the transition to potentially new and different monetary, financial and fiscal frameworks in Scotland," William Murray, an IMF spokesman, told reporters.

His comments highlight the questions over which currency an independent Scotland would use, the regulation of its banks, and its budget position after negotiations to separate from the UK.

Economic officials in Washington appear to have only just woken up to the real possibility of a Yes vote - having assumed it was unlikely. They point to the risk of a financial shock and resulting uncertainty that might hurt investment on both sides of the border.

One of many issues a newly independent Scotland would have to resolve is its membership of the IMF.

With a population of 5.3m, an independent Scotland would be too small to have its own executive director. It might seek to form a constituency with the rump UK, or else join another European constituency.

Scotland ...the only country in the world to have massive oil reserves and not benefitted from it.... its a curse for Scotland but great for financing London spending spree

EDUCATION DEBT NOT JUST FOR THE YOUNG _ SENIORS INCREASINGLY STRUGGLE TO PAY BACK LOANS

thanks to climbing tuition and inadequate college savings, 40 million Americans now have at least one outstanding student loan, according to new analysis from credit bureau Experian. That's up from 29 million consumers in 2008.

On average, borrowers are carrying roughly four student loans each, up from less than three in 2008. Meanwhile, the average balance has increased to $29,000 from $23,000.

That has helped to push nationwide student loan debt to an all-time record of $1.2 trillion, an 84% jump since the recession.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rosemary Anderson could be 81 by the time she pays off her student loans. After struggling with divorce, health problems and an underwater home mortgage, the 57-year-old anticipates there could come a day when her Social Security benefits will be docked to make the payments.

Like Anderson, a growing percentage of aging Americans struggle to pay back their student debt. Tens of thousands of them even see their Social Security benefits garnished when they cannot do so.

Among Americans ages 65 to 74, 4 percent in 2010 carried federal student loan debt, up from 1 percent six years earlier, according to a Government Accountability Office report released Wednesday at a Senate Aging Committee hearing.

For all seniors, the collective amount of student loan debt grew from about $2.8 billion in 2005 to about $18.2 billion last year.

 RUSSIA DEVELOPING NEW NUCLEAR

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia will counter military moves by the U.S. and NATO with an array of new nuclear and conventional weapons, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday as the military successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine. At the same time, he emphasized that Russia will not enter a new arms race and will tightly control its military budget to avoid overburdening the economy.

Putin accused the West of using the crisis in Ukraine to reinvigorate NATO, warning that Moscow will ponder a response to the alliance's decision to create a rapid-reaction "spearhead" force to protect Eastern Europe. The statement appeared to signal that the Russian leader is determined to pursue a tough course in the face of more Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis that has sent Russia-West relations plummeting to their lowest point since the Cold War.

CALIFORNIA REQUIRES 3 SICK DAYS FOR MILLIONS OF WORKERS, AS BUSINESS FEARS LOST JOBS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Wednesday that will require most California employers next year to provide up to three sick days for millions of workers. "This is the least we can do," Brown told reporters after signing the bill at a ceremony in downtown Los Angeles, alluding to a growing income gap that has left many Americans struggling to make ends meet.

Supporters said as many as 6.5 million workers - including temporary and part-time employees - will benefit from the law that becomes effective in July. "Whether you're a dishwasher in San Diego or a store clerk in Oakland, this bill frees you of having to choose between your family's health and your job," Brown said in a statement from his office. This bill requires most employers to provide paid sick leave to employees who work 30 or more days within a year, and workers will earn a minimum of one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

LEW: TREASURY WILL ACT IN 'VERY NEAR FUTURE

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration will decide "in the very near future" what actions it can take to make it less profitable for U.S. companies to shift their legal addresses to other countries, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said Monday.

A growing number of U.S. companies are shifting their addresses abroad in an effort to reduce their U.S. taxes. The maneuver is known as a corporate inversion. In a speech Monday, Lew said these companies are eroding the U.S. tax base and shifting the burden of funding the government to other taxpayers. He said the best way to address the issue is for Congress to overhaul the U.S. tax code making it more attractive for companies to stay in the U.S. With tax reform facing an uncertain future in Congress, Lew pressed lawmakers to pass legislation making it harder for U.S. companies to pull off corporate inversions.

KENTUCKY RECEIVING FUNDING

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky is receiving a $300,000 State Trade Export Promotion grant to foster international trade among the state's small businesses. Gov. Steve Beshear's office says the program's goals include increasing the number of small businesses that begin to export and increasing the value of exports for small businesses that currently export. Kentucky received a $276,000 grant through the program in 2012 and $427,000 during the first round in 2011. The funds help make it more affordable for small businesses to participate in international trade missions, sales trips and subscription services provided by the U.S. Commerce Department. The money also helps with international marketing campaigns, export trade show exhibits, training workshops or other export initiatives

MARRIOTT PLANS TO ADD 1,300 HOTELS BY THE END OF 2017 AND WILL DOUBLE ITS PRESENCE IN ASIA (NOT INAMERICA)

NEW YORK (AP) - Marriott said Monday it plans to add 1,300 hotels by the end of 2017 to capitalize on economic growth and the expanding middle class overseas, with a focus on Asia. The company said it will gain 200,000 to 235,000 rooms, which could add $450 million to its annual revenue. It plans to have 300 to 315 locations in Asia by the end of 2017, or at least double the 150 hotels it had there at the end of 2013. "Economic growth and rising middle classes are driving this travel, and we now have more hotels open or in development outside the U.S. than at any time in our company's history," Marriott President and CEO Arne Sorenson said in a press release.

DUBAI GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO $32 BILLION EXPANSION OF 2ND AIRPORT AIMING TO BE WORLD'S BIGGEST

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Dubai's ruler has endorsed a $32 billion expansion plan for the city's second airport that aims to make it the world's biggest, the emirate's airport operator said Monday in the latest sign that the Middle East's brash commercial hub is determined to move on from its 2009 financial crisis. The approval sets in motion a vast building project that will boost capacity exponentially at the airport known as Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central. Backers envision it will eventually handle more than 200 million passengers per year. The first phase of the expansion alone aims to build enough runway and terminal space to handle 120 million passengers a year and 100 mammoth Airbus A380 double-decker jets at any given time. The world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, handled 94.4 million people last year.

NFL VENTURES OVERSEAS, TO THE WEST COAST AND ONLINE IN QUEST FOR BIGGER AND BIGGER BUCKS

In the not-too-distant future, a football fan might be able to take a seat at the stadium, punch up any game on a seatback monitor, keep tabs on the real-time stats of a fantasy team, order up a hot dog and beer and even have a brand-new jacket brought to the seat if the wind kicks up. This is the future of the NFL - the $9 billion league that kicked off the 2014 season this week and has plans on going bigger over the next decade. Agent Leigh Steinberg, who foresaw the TV explosion that bankrolled the NFL into the 21st century, views the stadium-as-marketplace concept as one of the natural and soon-to-come investments the league can make en route to making its next $9 billion. Commissioner Roger Goodell is thinking even bigger - on record as saying he wants to grow the NFL into a $25 billion business by 2027.

PHILADELPHIA OPENS 3 NEW PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS AMID STRUGGLES, UNCERTAINTY OVER FUTURE FUNDING

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia has opened three new public high schools in an effort to show the troubled district is still trying to innovate despite the specter of massive layoffs. Classes started Monday for about 135,000 students. Officials say it will be another tough year, with reduced staffs and fewer resources. The new schools are housed in existing buildings and aim to provide small, supportive environments. Superintendent William Hite helped open one called The LINC, which stands for Learning in New Contexts. Meanwhile, protesters demonstrated outside the governor's Philadelphia office, calling for additional funding. The district is waiting for state lawmakers to approve a cigarette tax that's expected to generate $49 million for city schools this year.

OBAMA TO WAIT ON IMMIGRATION MOVE UNTIL AFTER ELECTION

Reuters reports, "Obama reversed course on Saturday and delayed taking executive action on immigration reform until after November congressional elections, bowing to concerns it could cost his fellow Democrats control of the U.S. Senate."

Obama admitted the flood of illegal minors across the border this year and public reaction to it affected his decision. "[T]he truth of the matter is that the politics did shift midsummer because of that problem," he said. Midsummer?

Try mid-weekend. Just Friday, Obama reiterated, "I want to be very clear. My intention is, in the absence of action by Congress, I'm going to do what I can do within the legal constraints of my office. Because it's the right thing to do for the country." By Saturday, he had decided to delay.

UPPING THE GAME AGAINST ISIL ANNOUNCEMENT COME WEDNESDAY

Fresh off the NATO Summit, Barack Obama returned with some new bravado to confront the world's problems, confident with the backing of the other world leaders.

On Sunday, he appeared on "Meet the Press" where Chuck Todd asked Obama, "Are you preparing the country to go back to war?" And Obama replied, "I'm preparing the country to make sure we deal with a threat from ISIL.

Keep in mind this is something we know how to do. We've been dealing with terrorist threats for quite some time." Preparing the country for war is different than preparing the country to make sure the country his administration remembers to focus on national security.

But make no mistake, Obama will "start going on some offense" against an opponent that he now admits is "not a JV team." But this is more evidence he prematurely spiked the football after his strike on Osama bin Laden

HARVARD SURVEY FINDS FALLING WAGES, MORE PART-TIME JOBS AND FIRMS FAVORING ROBOTS OVER PEOPLE

 By JOSH BOAK

The ship is sinking more slowly

(AP:WASHINGTON) WASHINGTON (AP) - The corporate executives who decide whether U.S. workers get meaningful raises have a message:

Don't expect one anytime soon.  And if you're counting on a full-time job offer in the future, your prospects may be dimming.

That's the future that many U.S. executives envision. A survey of Harvard Business School alumni released Monday reveals a series of trends that are widening income disparities and may be weakening the ability of the U.S. economy to grow in the long term.

More than 40 percent of the respondents foresee lower pay and benefits for workers.

49% favor outsourcing work over hiring staffers.

A growing share prefer part-time employees.

46% would rather invest in new technology than hire or retain workers.

At the same time, it's becoming harder for the executives to find skilled workers, according to the survey results.

Median household incomes, adjusted for inflation, are below their pre-recession levels, according to estimates by Sentier Research. The median income was $54,045 in July, about 4.6 percent lower than when the recession began in late 2007.

The survey suggests that incomes aren't likely to increase much anytime soon.

Forty-one percent of respondents see lower wages and benefits ahead; just 27 percent expect pay raises.

The survey's responses run counter to some traditional economic models. Historically, a falling unemployment rate - the U.S. rate has dropped steadily to 6.1 percent - tends to spur competition among employers for workers and leads them to raise wages and salaries.  The survey found that many companies are reluctant to add jobs if other alternatives exist.

Only 25 percent said they preferred investing in employees, compared with 46 percent who would rather spend on technology.

The survey drew on responses from 1,947 Harvard Business School graduates, ranging in age from 26 to 98. Among the respondents who are working, 40 percent said they had a title of chief executive or its equivalent.

Slightly less than half say the economy is becoming less competitive relative to other countries.

STATES CREATING DRUG MONITORING PROGRAMS

Patients on prescription medications will be experiencing more monitoring of their drug treatment in the near future. All fifty states are trying to enact legislation to help monitor prescribed drugs. Most of the legislation is proposed to protect people from drug abuse and addiction using pain medicines and opiates. However, the wording of the law can also apply to any prescribed medicine. Some states have passed these laws and some have not made them active yet. The pharmaceutical industry is moving forward with the technology to CHIP certain medications and would most likely be linked to state laws for monitoring. This process is called the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and will compile data on population groups, track 55 million on Medicaid (help reduce fraud), track health insurance compliance, disease control (including mental health) and of course costs. What will this mean for millions of Americans? Let's find out.

HEADED UP BY THE DOJ

Make no mistake, this drug monitoring program is coming from the US Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration. The monitoring program is, according to the DOJ, a statewide electronic database to collect data on substances (drugs) dispensed in each state.  State law enforcement will collect and send data to the "housing agency." This is a special state regulatory body authorized under state law. It would appear that the federal government has informed state legislators what laws they need to pass to make this national database happen. The DOJ admits that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is not overseeing this drug monitoring program and that this program may "serve several purposes." Again, this is being implemented under the guise of education and prevention of drug abuse and addictions yet Drug Enforcement has no hands activity on with this monitoring program.

STATES FALLING IN LINE

By the fall of 2011 thirty-seven (37) states have enacted prescription monitoring legislation and it is currently active. The rest of the states have introduced laws but are not yet operational. This enables the "special state agency" to collect, dispense all controlled substances and to collect mountains of information on patients using such medications. According to the Controlled Substance Act, there are five (5) categories of controlled substances. According to the DOJ, a substance does not have to be listed as a controlled substance to be treated as a schedule 1 (one) substance. If any drug affects you psychologically or offers physical dependence and risk of death; this is considered a "most dangerous class of drugs." Most prescribed drugs that are meant to be taken as "life-long" medications such as for blood pressure, diabetes or drugs for mental illness are going to create a chemical (physical) dependency and therefore are technically in this category.  However, if you are taking a medication recommended and prescribed by your physician such as anticoagulants, you most likely won't have law enforcement knocking down your door. But you will eventually be put into the database and your use of such drugs will be monitored. Each state controls the access to this data collected. Every state will have this because the federal government pays them in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to participate (Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program - HRPDMP). This is tied into the National All Schedules Prescription Electronic Reporting Act (NASPER) of 2005, which has grant money in the millions of dollars. If your state participates in both programs that's more money the state receives from the feds.

PROGRAM DIFFERENCE

You may be asking what is the difference between HRPDMP and NASPER? The Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program helps state law enforcement agencies and public health officials collect and analyze prescription data through the state central database. The National All Schedules Prescription Electronic Reporting Act distributes the federal money via the Department of Health and Human Services. This is also to streamline the exchange of interstate information. Obviously, if the state wants federal money for this data collection they agree to the terms and conditions of these federal programs.

STATES MONITORING ARE:

Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

STATES NOT YET MONITORING ARE:

Eleven states (Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin) and one U.S. territory (Guam), have enacted legislation to establish a PDMP, but are not fully operational.

DATA COLLECTION

If you live in Oregon they passed the monitoring program in 2013 and the data they collect on patients includes; sex, days supplied with drug, refill data, prescribers and the pharmacist who filled your prescription. All public health authorities in this state have access to this information including medical examiners.

WORST FEAR

Some states like Missouri did not want to monitor patient drug records due to other states had their databases hacked. As of July 25, 2014 Missouri was the only state not to have a prescription drug monitoring program because it said "it was a big problem." They noted the breach of security that has resulted in five states such as; Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Utah and Washington. Senator Rob Schaaf cited an instance where a law enforcement officer in Utah used the database to seek out pain drugs and then intimidated patients to turn over the drugs to him. He went on to say that these types of monitoring programs do not show they reduce the dependency and deaths from opiate pain drugs and other medicines and since the programs were enacted, the use of heroin increased. Senator Schaaf isn't the only one that thinks these drug monitoring programs threaten our liberty.

VIRGINA'S DATABASE HACKED

Privacy rights have been argued when collected data is made available to those who should not have it. The Associated Press reported that on April 30, 2009 the Virginia drug monitoring database had a huge security breach and hackers stole 8.2 million patient records and 36 million prescriptions. The hackers held the private information of millions of citizens for a $10 million ransom demand. When the hackers received payment they would then send healthcare and law enforcement authorities the password to once again have access the data. The hackers said if the ransom went unpaid in seven days they would put the information up on a global auction to the highest bidder. Virginia authorities refused to pay and the ransom deadline expired. The investigation is ongoing and no one has been caught in connection with the virtual theft. Of course the state of Virginia sent notification letters to all citizens who had any prescription records and their social security numbers in the database. The reports said the database was intact and nothing was lost so it is unclear if the hacker copied records or even had access to them but may have simply changed the password. I think by now most folks know that there is no such thing as a secure database.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Technology and the Internet may have eliminated the physical requirement of communicating but not the costs of communicating. We have gained speed in which information is transmitted and received but at what cost? Technology is dehumanizing mankind by exposing all the intimate details about a person without investing in human contact. Mark Twain said, "Unlimited power is the ideal thing when it is in safe hands." However, the only hands unlimited power is safe in is God's.

"A little power in the hands of a small mind is a dangerous thing." Wendy Wilson

I think that data harvesting programs such as the prescription monitoring program is a two-edged sword. It may offer limited good but I think it will deliver power into unsafe hands and inflict injury on innocent people. I can see this program being used as another outlet for identity theft and to manipulate patients by cutting them off from their medications. You may ask who would be able to do such a thing and get away with it. The very entity which demanded it be installed - the government. What better way to make people bow down then to restrict their lifeline of medications.

LIFELINE OR NOOSE?

There are millions of people on what are called life-long drugs. These are prescribed medications which cause a physical change in the body. These drugs manage blood pressure, blood sugar and other functions of the body for survival.  Patients become metabolically dependent on these medications and without them will most likely die. Lifelong drugs do not fix the health problem or strengthen the body but act like a crutch. I would not like to be in a position where my life was held hostage to the availability of a drug. Anything could happen to shut off the distribution line of medicine; a hurricane or other natural disaster, war or economic collapse.  I would try to find a way to fix the problem and not be dependent on drugs. Obviously if your body depends on a drug every day then there is a weakness. One way to fix health issues is to find the cause and strengthen the body. Nearly 100% of the time our lifestyle has created a weakness and this has to be addressed. The strengthening part is also going to require a natural alternative to drugs. Herbs can stand in the gap and help the body become strong and if the lifestyle is a healthy one, eventually you won't need the herbs. Always do your homework on your prescribed medications and herbal products.
