Sunday Notes

The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for.  And the most you can do is live inside that hope.  Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.  ~ Barbara Kingsolver

11am Worship
Sermon    Jeremiah 32:1-15
"Living with Hope"
Rev. Dr. Brett Younger, Senior Minister

The choir will be singing four Psalms from Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms which was commissioned by Chichester Cathedral in Sussex, England for a three choirs festival in 1965. The text is in Hebrew and the music reflects Bernstein's signature style of combining classical compositional techniques with the lyricism of Broadway show tunes.

The Way We Worship @ 9:45 am
Why do we worship the way we worship?  What comes from the Bible and what doesn't?  Why is worship different in different churches?  Why does worship matter?  Brett will lead these six discussions in the Reception Room.

October 9 - Thinking about worship
October 16 - Sacred time
October 23 - Holy spaces
October 30 - Music
November 6 - Prayer
November 13 - Art

We will explore how we can worship with reverence, purpose, and passion.  We may discover that the antidote for burnout is not rest, but genuine worship.
Celebrating Covenant and Installation

In prayer we open our hearts to God.  Our hearts were open in our celebration of covenant and Brett's installation.  Read many of the prayers written and led by Plymouth members that day.
Plymouth Community

We went to the dogs (and other furry creatures) this week.

Wednesday Workers is Launched
Sunday School children get together on Wednesday afternoons to participate in all kinds of projects.  Last week they made pita for World Communion Sunday.  Yesterday it was all about making apple crisp for Plymouth's shelter guests.
What's next?  Ask Julia Rassmann.

Meet, Greet and Eat / October 15
Plymouth knows how to eat and Plymouth knows how to talk.  When we eat and talk at the same time, it's amazing.  We are looking for hosts and guests to participate in Plymouth's first "Meet, Greet, and Eat."  We will put together Plymouth members with common interests and backgrounds.  They will meet at the home of a Plymouth host where they will greet other members, engage in conversation and eat a meal with Plymouth friends (old and new).  Hosts can provide dinner or coordinate a potluck.
RSVP here.

Harvest Dinner / November 5
Celebrate our bounty and count our blessings at the Harvest Dinner on Saturday, November 5. Join us for cocktails and appetizers at 6:30, followed by a glorious dinner of seasonal dishes by Martin + Fitch. After dinner, piano entertainment and the famous Plymouth apple pie bake off, with very impartial judges in categories like classic, most unique, most delicious and more. Contact Kate Kincade to sign up to bake. Tickets are $60 per person. Fellowship and fun are included at no extra charge.  Off key singing of "We Gather Together": priceless. Click HERE to purchase tickets or contact Amy Talcott by November 1. There is an opportunity to donate a case of wine to help keep costs down. We need volunteers on Saturday for set up. Contact Caroline Koster to volunteer. Let's gather together for this Plymouth tradition!

Underground Railroad Featured on TV
Simone Boyce has the overview of the Underground Railroad in New York.  The Underground Railroad was not an actual railroad beneath the earth's surface. It was a secret network of people and places that facilitated the freedom of an estimated 30,000 slaves. We take a look back at New York's two centuries of history with enslavement. We go inside a church basement in Brooklyn where slaves hid on their way to freedom. You hear from a descendant of Frederick Douglass as well as actress Amirah Vann, who plays Miss Ernestine on the WGN America series "Undergound."  Check out the video

Plymouth Church School
This past week at Plymouth was filled with art, dance, music, library, and excitement as our specialist teachers began their work with the children. We saw children going on "shape walks" around the school and then painting the shapes they had seen, making shapes with their bodies in dance, singing new songs and old, and choosing books from the library to bring back to their classrooms for the first time. It is wonderful to see how all of our classrooms are infused with the arts every day.

Plymouth Pulpit  - "Taking Chances"

At times we fear failure more than we love life, so we refuse the great adventures. "God calls us to live with courage." Listen to Brett's sermon which calls all of us to step out of what we have always done.
