From the Principal
As you may have heard, or read on our Facebook page, our First Robotics team was selected as the Rookie All-Star team at their very first competition. This amazing achievement comes as the robotics team switches from the Vex competition to the more intensive First Robotics program - a move requiring a true team effort. Our DECA students have also earned awards at their state competition and we have four students moving onto nationals and internationals. Furthermore, one of our art students, Kalista Schultz, will be moving onto nationals for her PTSA Reflections piece. These successes show what can happen when students follow their passions and get involved in activities in high school.

With spring approaching I wanted to bring your attention to some issues; if you feel these apply to your family, please help us by working with your student to assure their continued success. First, we do have a dress code. We are seeing a large number of crop tops which are showing stomachs, etc. These are not allowed. Students will be sent home or asked to change. We also have a limit on how short dresses or shorts can be. They need to reach the mid-thigh. As a mother of three daughters I can appreciate the struggle parents have enforcing a dress code. Please check our handbook for what is and is not allowed - talk to your student so we don't have to interrupt their time at school to deal with inappropriate dress. Second, our attendance issues are getting worse. We have significant numbers of students missing in excess of 20 days of school. This has educational impact. As a reminder, student absences need to be excused within 48 hours, otherwise they are considered unexcused and the missed work cannot be made up

Finally, the Lake Washington School District will be running a bond on Tuesday, April 26. The district has experienced seven straight years of enrollment growth with 3,240 students added just in the last five years. We do not have enough classrooms and have many aging facilities. The Long Term Facility Task Force has recommended that we build more schools, as opposed to other growth-accommodating options. Most importantly, the bond measure will not increase the tax rates. Please consider attending the PTSA meeting on Wednesday, March 30 or the LWSD 2016 Community Bond Meeting on Tuesday, March 29 at 6:30-8pm in the Commons to learn more about the bond measure.

Best Summer Plans for High School Students
Parent Ed Talk at PTSA General Membership MeetingGMM
sunflower-2.jpg
Left to their own devices, many students will spend the summer glued to their phone, gaming system or any other screen in sight. A bit of time for unwinding is fine, but summer is a great opportunity for students to stay active and try out things they're interested in. There is much they can do to start building a resume to impress future employers or admissions staff at their selected colleges. Come find out what options your student has to make the most of summer as Julie Madsen, LWHS Career Specialist, shares her ideas and resources on Wednesday, March 30 in the Library. Parents and students welcome!

Join us at 7pm for a brief PTSA business meeting before our parent ed presentation. Principal Christina Thomas will speak about the upcoming bond and how it affects LWHS. The slate of nominees for next year's PTSA board of directors will be presented and elections for those offices will be held. (See the slate on lwhsptsa.org.) The parent ed presentation will begin at 7:30pm. Contact LWHS PTSA Co-Presidents Anne Ryan and Liz Hedreen for more information.

Why You Should Vote YES on the 2016 Bond!
Tax Rates Will NOT be Raised
  • The bond addresses overcrowding without raising tax rates.
  • This school year, we added enough students to the school district to require 34 more classrooms.
  • By next school year, there will be 168 portables in the district; that's the equivalent of seven elementary schools worth of classroom space being housed in portables.
  • The bond provides a fiscally responsible way to add more classroom space and relieve overcrowding by prioritizing the schools' most urgent needs - including handling state mandated all-day kindergarten and smaller classroom sizes.
  • The bond is part of a 15 year plan to make sure our schools support the projected number of students and address aging buildings.
  • Better schools make everyone's property values go up!

Get information about how much the bond will cost, and what it will pay for on the LWSD website

How You Can Help!
  • Follow the bond effort on Twitter and retweet their tweets.
  • Register to vote no later than Monday, March 28! Encourage your friends and neighbors to register to vote! It only takes five minutes and you can do it online: vote.wa.gov. LWHS students will have the opportunity to register to vote on Friday, March 18 during lunch. See article above.
  • Spread the word to your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues, even if they don't have kids in school.
  • Learn more on the district website at lwsd.org, or attend one of the upcoming bond informational meetings:

    • March 23 - Redmond High School cafeteria, 6:30-8pm

Kang Achievements

LW Reflections Winner to Compete at Nationals
Congratulations to Kalista Schultz for winning the PTSA Reflections Outstanding Interpretation award in photography for her work titled, "Thaumaturgic" (performing miracles). This is the highest award at the state level of the arts competition. Kalista will now represent LWHS and Washington state in the national Reflections competition. This is quite an accomplishment as we don't often have Reflections entries make it all the way to the national round of judging. Way to go, Kalista, and good luck!

You can see more of Kalista's photography on display at LWHS in the third floor skybridge gallery.

Robotics Team Wins at District
Lake Washington High School's FIRST Robotics team, "Code Purple," was named Rookie All Star during the PNW District - Auburn Mountainview competition in Auburn on March 5. To build the robots, students use donated components worth tens of thousands of dollars. They had six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season's engineering challenge. Well done, Kangs!

Two LWHS students were selected to participate in the Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) program at the Museum of Flight. WAS is designed to connect high school juniors with educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through independent learning, hands-on interaction, professional guidance, and site-based tours. Congratulations to Megan Gertmenian and Anna Stoneman!

Students applied in fall of 2015; they are now among the 173 students participating in an online, distance learning curriculum. Designed by NASA and the University of Washington, the curriculum focuses on the past, present, and future of human space travel. Participating students are able to register to earn five UW Earth Space Science graduation requirement credits. The top performing students will be invited to one of four Summer Residency sessions at the Museum of Flight in June and July.

Learn more about the WAS program. Student and teacher applications for the 2016-17 program year will be available in August.

Kang Wins Award at Model UN Conference
globe.jpg
Sam Dorsey, representing Mali at the recent Model United Nations (UN) Conference held on the University of Washington campus, was awarded UN Environmental Programme, Distinguished Delegate. Students put their skills in research, writing, public speaking, debate, diplomacy, and leadership to work against private and public schools across the region.

Participants in Model UN conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees based on actual UN groups. Delegates are assigned countries, along with a topic (or topics) that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions. They then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the country they represent. Prizes are given for written position papers and for performance as a delegate.

Well done, Sam!

LW Students Qualify for DECA International
McKenzie Granston and Katrina Yang each placed high enough at the DECA State Career Development Conference to qualify for the International Career Development Conference in Nashville in April. The state-level competition, held at Meydenbauer Center on March 3-5, saw LWHS students competing against other schools from around the state.

McKenzie received fourth place in Marketing Management Role Play; Katrina was awarded sixth place in Entrepreneurship Franchise Business Plan. In addition, Matthew Malloy and Nicholas Mihas wrote a 45-page business manual (for the student store) which achieved Gold Status. Both students are moving on to DECA nationals to compete against other student stores in a leadership seminar and competition. Congratulations, and good luck to all!
