From the Principal
Welcome, or welcome back, to Lake Washington High School! One of the things you can count on in life is change. At LWHS we continually work at improving our practices through reflection and feedback, which often leads to change.

Staff changes: This year, my fifth year as principal at Lake Washington High School, I will be joined by a new administrative team. Lloyd Higgins is joining me as an associate principal. Lloyd has previously been an administrator at Redmond High School. Lloyd will be working with our incoming freshmen. Another new associate principal, Kia duNann, is also joining us from Redmond High School where she completed her administrative internship last year. Kia will be working with our sophomore class. Finally, Brian Story will be our third associate principal. Brian also just completed his administrative internship, at Hazen High School. Brian will work with our junior class. I will continue to work with the senior class. We have also added approximately twenty teachers to our teaching staff. You can meet them at our upcoming Curriculum Night which is Wednesday, September 16 from 6:30- 8:30 pm.

Parking lot changes: As you know, the district and Lake Washington High School are growing. You can see evidence of our growth in the parking lot where we have added six portables for classroom space. Due to this addition, the parking lot closest to the stadium will be closed. All students and parents will need to park on the west side. We will be moving visitor and disabled parking. This growth also requires we secure the back gate closest to the ball fields. We will keep the west gate open for traffic flow purposes.

Campus safety changes: In the interest of safety, I am pleased to announce that we will have a full-time School Resource Officer. Officer Hardsty will be on campus daily to ensure we have a safe learning environment. We are also adding an additional campus security officer who is yet to be hired.

Schedule changes: Our daily schedule has also changed for the upcoming year. This was communicated in the May Kang Crier and has been on the LWHS website all summer. Please refer to it for specifics. I will be talking more about this during Curriculum Night.

Our first day of school is Tuesday, September 1. On the first day freshmen will attend from 8am- 2:30pm. They should arrive prior to 8am to pick up their schedules. Freshmen will report directly to the gym at 8am for a short assembly and welcome. All other students will start school on September 1 at 10am. They should also plan to arrive early (prior to 10am) to pick up their schedules. They will report directly to first period.

Please refer to the Back-to-School Information posted on the LWHS website for further questions. I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming event soon.

LW Needs tissues, hand sanitizer & printer paper
Here's a math problem for you: If each of 1600 LWHS student uses one tissue a day throughout the school year, how many boxes of Kleenex will need to be purchased to accommodate all of those teenage nose blows?

a)   200
b)   800
c)   1600
d)   2400

Given 1600 students, 180 days in a school year, and 120 tissues a box - that is a mind-blowing 2400 boxes! The LWHS PTSA purchases boxes of tissue throughout the year but teachers always need and appreciate additional donations.

Also wanted: Reams of printer paper and hand sanitizer (think about all that nose blowing...).

Collection boxes will be outside the school tonight at the Back-to-School BBQ, on the first day of school and at Curriculum Night on September 16. The LWHS PTSA, teachers and staff thank you for your donations!

Register for "Fear-free" practice SAT & ACT tests
Check out the new SAT test on September 26
caf_-laptop-people.jpg
LWHS PTSA is partnering with Princeton Review to give students an opportunity to take practice SAT and ACT tests. These tests are practice only, so although they will be scored, they will not go on students' permanent record. This is a great way for kids to find out how prepared they are, and also a great opportunity to practice taking the test in a real test environment. The September SAT will be modeled on the new format that the College Board will be implementing in March 2016, so this will give kids a sneak preview of what's in store. Tests will be returned within 1-2 weeks at an evening review session for both parents and students, held at LWHS.

Cost: $20 per test; free to students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program
