Letter from Principal Christina Thomas

Dear Parents:

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. We are very excited for another year and another group of incoming freshman. With this being our second year with freshman we are definitely more prepared. We have hired approximately fifteen new teachers this year, who also bring a level of excitement and anticipation. You will have an opportunity to meet our teachers at Curriculum Night on Wednesday, Sept. 18th, from 6:30 - 8:30pm.

This is an important year. We are implementing the Common Core Standards, which are national standards for learning. We are also using common assessments in classes, to ensure high levels of learning for all students. We will be providing more information around the Common Core, what it means, and how it will be assessed, at our first PTSA General Meeting on Wednesday, September 25th at 6:30pm, in the Library. I hope you will be able to join us.

We will be testing all sophomores on the PSAT on October 16th. Juniors should also register for this test, even if they took it as a sophomore, as this is the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship program.

This year we will be sharing a weekly bulletin on our webpage to keep parents better informed regarding school events and important dates. Our webpage is the "go to place" for information. Students will have announcements on Tuesdays and Fridays during tutorial and homeroom. We are continuing both our homeroom and tutorial periods this year. Homeroom is designed to assist students in developing relationships with upperclassmen and developing a sense of school unity. Tutorial is an opportunity for students to receive extra support in subject areas, by meeting with their teachers in smaller settings.

We are interested in hearing your thoughts regarding our school programs. We will be sending out a parent survey in October. Please respond to this survey.

Finally, thank you for your continued support of our students and school. We are fortunate to be in such a giving community.

Sincerely,

Christina Thomas, Principal

Counseling Office News

Important News from the Counseling Office

The 2013-2014 school year has finally arrived! The first few weeks of school are extremely busy, so I thank you for your patience, and I will return your email as soon as I can.

If you are curious about assigned classes, students received their final first semester schedules the first day of school, September 3rd. Please keep in mind that students must remain in assigned classes for the first 2 days of school.

If students would like to change an elective because they were placed in an elective that they did not select, they will be able to download a "Schedule Change Request" form from our school website starting after school, on Wednesday, September 4th. Please keep in mind that we are not able to adjust schedules to change a lunch, to request a different teacher or to rearrange the order of classes. The last day for students to submit a schedule change is Monday, September 9th.

As a reminder, this is simply a very busy time of year. While we would love to immediately accommodate and meet with every student, it isn't possible. We appreciate your following the process and being patient with us as we do our best to meet the needs of all students.

-Marilyn Hargraves, Counselor (Rf-Z)

PTSA News

Welcome Letter from PTSA President, Julie Peterson
Website, Kang Crier, Pass the Pouch, BBQ, General Meeting and more!

Welcome back to another exciting year at Lake Washington High School!

Your PTSA had made lots of changes this summer. We are so excited to have launched our new website. We want this to be your "go to" place for information. One long anticipated benefit is that you can now sign up to be a member and donate to our Pass the Pouch fundraiser online! Yes, even with a credit card! Go to article on website.

Another important change is that the Kang Crier will now arrive in your email twice per month. We hope this give parents more timely information, articles and news from LWHS. Please email us at [email protected] if you have ideas for articles or suggestions for content.

Pass the Pouch is the only fundraiser for LWHS PTSA and each year we depend on this fundraiser for our entire operating budget. This is your opportunity to help us meet our $17,000 goal. Please donate generously on September 18th during the LWHS Curriculum Night, or online anytime with a credit card. Read more about Pass the Pouch and what programs are supported by these donations.

The PTSA supported the annual Back-to-School BBQ on August 28th and it was a fabulous success. We served around 450 plates of burgers and hotdogs and had a chance to greet old friends and meet some new ones. The PTSA supports this event with $1000 per year because we believe that getting families together, and providing a relaxed, fun venue for students to meet before the year starts directly supports our goal to promote a strong sense of school community and pride.

The best way to find out what the PTSA does for your school is to attend our general meetings the 3rd Wednesday of every other month. Join us on Wednesday, September 25th, at 6:30pm in the library for our first meeting.

Thank you to those of you who have already joined the PTSA, donated to Pass the Pouch and filled out your volunteer form! Please check our website for these forms, or better yet, use the website to join and donate! Now more than ever, you belong in PTSA. Because no matter how big your kids get, you'll always care about making things better for them.

We look forward to seeing you!

Julie Peterson
