Great things happen in the Lutheran schools of the South Wisconsin District and I want to be able to share these. If you have something you feel is worth sharing, email me at cody@swd.lcms.org
As I walked into St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grafton on Sunday for the 25thTeaching Anniversary for Denise Gieschen, I was in a good mood. When I saw that the final hymn was How Great thou Art, I was in a great mood. When I realized it was Trinity Sunday, I must admit that my mood quickly soured. Why? In my mind, Trinity Sunday means reciting the Athanasian Creed...the longest one. Trinity Sunday usually means that the sermon will focus on trying to explain the Holy Trinity, which isn't really possible. During this particular sermon, I couldn't help but think about how someone who was not raised Lutheran
would feel trying to figure this all out. "So, there are three people, but not really? How are they all separate, but still one?" If I as a born and raised Lutheran struggle to understand this concept, how much more difficult would it be for someone new to the Church? As our schools are filling with increasingly non-Lutheran students, how can we help these children and families understand difficult concepts like the Trinity? Jesus himself answered this question. "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:3). We help these children and families understand difficult concepts like the Trinity by having a childlike faith. A faith that trusts in things that are unseen. The older we get, the more difficult this becomes. I still don't fully understand the Trinity, it's a mystery. But like a child who believes the words of his parents, I have faith in what it is...Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
