"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
Luke 19:10
28
Earlier last week, I received the raw data our schools submitted to Synod during the Fall (or in the case of some schools...winter). The statistical data that our schools submitted were the usual enrollment, tuition, church membership type of statistics. I enjoy looking at statistical data and comparing current and previous data, seeking to identify trends, etc. When I received the Excel spreadsheet with our 2015 district statistics I was eager to find one number: the percentage of students in our schools who we report as being unchurched. Because of the way the data was sent, it was easiest for me to just look at elementary schools for this quick snapshot. My quick math found that approximately 28% of our 1st-8th grade students are unchurched.
The number doesn't really come as a surprise to me, and after I have had some time to really look at how these numbers breakdown based on location, etc., perhaps I will be more intrigued. But still, 28% confirms what many of us have realized for a number of years. That is, our schools are a significant, if not the most significant, mission opportunity we have. Your individual school may have a lower or higher number, but this is an opportunity for us to step back and reflect. What are you doing to reach the 28%? What is your strategy? Yes, the Holy Spirit works, but he works through us. May God continue to bless our schools as we serve all students - those who are "churched" and those who are "unchurched."
