Great things happen in the Lutheran schools of the South Wisconsin District and I want to be able to share these. If you have something you feel is worth sharing, email me at cody@swd.lcms.org
"From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48b)

In the picture on the right, you will see a group of students at a chapel service at Concordia Lutheran School in Palmar Arriba, Dominican Republic. As many of you know, the South Wisconsin District is a managing partner with the missions in the Dominican Republic and I was able to attend last week's meetings and tour the schools. I was aware of our partnership in the Dominican, but to be honest, I was unsure whether or not it was something that was worthwhile. My thought had been that we have plenty of needs right here in our own SWD that we should be supporting. I couldn't have been more wrong. To be sure, we have poverty in our District. Many of our students and families struggle to afford a Lutheran education and many more toil endlessly at barely make a living wage. This does not come close to the poverty I witnessed in the Dominican, especially in Palmar Arriba where Concordia Lutheran School is located. While I witnessed the poverty (tin roofs, unclean water, etc.), I also witnessed a love for the Gospel of Jesus that was bold. I witnessed faith in the students that was mature beyond their years. Our partner schools in the Dominican Republic are striving to do what we do so well here in SWD - provide a strong, Lutheran Christian education to students. On the flight home, the verse above kept coming to mind. We have been given much in our District. Our schools, even with the struggles we face, serve as bold witnesses to the Gospel. We have a tremendous opportunity, and responsibility, to continue our partnership with the Dominican Republic. I look forward to brainstorming ways that our SWD schools can support our sister schools in the Dominican.

The deadlines are fast approaching and it is very important that we make these opportunities available to our teachers and students.

14 students from religious and independent schools will be selected out of 100 statewide, and awarded a $3,000 scholarship for post-secondary education.
