AARchallengeR Challenge

The annual AR Challenge is set to begin on January 26, 2015. Any elementary LCMS school in the United States and Canada that is presently using the Accelerated Reader program may enter the contest. All students must be independent readers.

The purpose of this challenge is to provide an incentive and motivation for our children at Lutheran schools to read more, get smarter and have fun. Reading for this contest can occur anywhere the children are - at home, at school, in the car, etc. All reporting of points will be submitted by each school's coordinator via the AR Challenge web site.

 Celebrate Religious Freedom Day
with free LCMS resources

There's one day each year that doesn't garner decorations or turkeys, a day off work or a special stamp from the Post Office. It's Jan. 16: Religious Freedom Day.

The day and the topic aren't new or trendy. In fact, Thomas Jefferson was already writing about the importance of protecting religious liberty, afforded by the First Amendment, in the 1786 Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom:

No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.

This month, we're delivering uniquely LCMS resources specially designed to help you, your congregations, classrooms and colleges speak up about what we as Lutherans are "free to profess" about key matters facing America today.

Keynote Speaker:
Mike Zimmer, NID Mission Facilitator
"For the Healing of the Nations" - Rev. 22:2

Each week, we will be highlighting a few of the sessions that will be available.

When to Call our District's Critical Incident Stress Management Team (CISM)

Rev. Dr. William Wagner, SWD Coordinator

Congregations experience crisis. Some of them more devastating than others. Some are man made, some are natural. When the resources of the local congregation are exhausted, the District CISM team is available to help. In this session, explanation will be given about what the team does, the resources available and how to access the team.

Everyone a Witness

Rev. Mark Wood, Director of LCMS Witness & Outreach Ministry

When Jesus said, "You will be My witnesses," He was stating a fact. Every believer is a witness of Jesus. The health and future of our congregations depend upon our response to His call. How can we be, and encourage others to be, more faithful and effective witnesses of Jesus?

A New Approach to Building Bridges in the Community and Inviting Youth and Families Into the Body of Christ

Sanya Parson, Director, Rebecca's Garden of Hope, Inc.

Come and hear about this exciting outreach ministry and see how a Rebecca's Garden of Hope partnership with your church will, by God's grace, release the power of God's Word and prayer to increase your ministry's community presence and impact.

Grant Writing for Churches

Deb Engel, Operations & Program Officer for Siebert Lutheran Foundation

This session will help anyone to better understand the steps involved in applying for a grant through Siebert Lutheran Foundation. You will learn what kinds of projects the Siebert Foundation funds and learn tips on providing good, solid information when completing grant applications online.

Say hello to the Lutheran Federal Credit Union.

Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) is pleased to announce that the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has granted a charter for the launch of a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod-focused credit union to be named Lutheran Federal Credit Union (LFCU).

Its offices will be at 10733 Sunset Office Drive, Suite 460, St. Louis, MO 63127.

"The Lutheran Federal Credit Union is a totally separate entity from the LCMS and LCEF, with its own governing Board of Directors. LCEF's role has been to provide organizational assistance and start-up capital to bring this new entity to fruition. The LCEF board and staff are pleased to have been part of the process that has led to the granting of a charter to operate."
