_______

June 9-13, 2014

This year, I've made the rounds to regional principal meetings as well as morning devotions to meet with many of your staff. During this time, I've lifted up the health and wellness of our church workers and the importance of being proactive rather than reactive. No longer can we afford to ignore this important aspect to our ministry if it is our desire to affective.

Earlier this week, I was with the faculty and staff at Lake Country Lutheran High School. This group of teachers get it! No, they may not be attending the Grace Place event in June, but they've taken a monumental step to begin identifying where they need help and support - as simple (and really it's not that simple) sharing personal struggles and asking for prayers amongst their colleagues! I believe self identification is a necessary step to a more healthy and productive ministry.

As summer break approaches, challenge yourself and your teachers to stay in the Word, spend time with family and friends - reconnect, exercise, eat healthy, find an accountability partner (mine is back in Colorado - we connect on a monthly basis), etc... Be proactive and see the benefits!

Blessings as you finish the year strong!

pollexRuth Pollex/DR Mission Update

Below are some of the events of this month and the April Newsletter (PDF) which you can share with your congregation. Thank you for your prayers.

Amongst other news I have been talking to Pastor Krey, the LCMS missionary and Regional Director for the area, about returning for another year. I am using this method of communication to let you know of this opportunity to continue supporting me in this partnership, to improve the education and lives of the families of the communities in which our Lutheran churches are located, so they can be a lighthouse of truth pointing all to our Saviour, Jesus.

Some goals that have been accomplished in my role as Educational specialist:

  • organization and coordination of a school board
  • completion of a government required school document - which we wrote with the Education team, and which states our identity, mission and vision as a Lutheran school
  • observation and evaluation of teachers
  • organization of April workshop and led short workshops with teachers in December and March
  • future goals: lead more workshops with teachers and help them in their individual planning

I also serve on the mission team as a musician, playing the piano at 3 church services each week, and giving classes to 6 members at the missions in Palmar Arriba and Pueblo Nuevo.

It has been a joy for me to serve here in the Dominican this past year, and I look forward to continuing serving God here, along with your prayers and support.  Thank you for partnering with me in this work!

CAPECAPE Outlook
Jill Biden Helps Celebrate 325 Years of Quaker Education

In 1689, William Penn established a school in Philadelphia "at the request, cost, and charges of the people called Quakers."  Three hundred twenty-five years later, on April 24, 2014, the "people called Quakers" celebrated the birth and growth of Friends education in the United States at the historic Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia.

Second Lady of the United States Jill Biden (center of photo) offered moving testimony on the influence of Friends education on her own family.  Find out what she said in the May issue of CAPE Outlook.

Sunday, April 27 was an amazing day for our LUMIN ministry.
  • 10 members of our Pilgrim school family were baptized this morning; eight students, a parent and a sibling. Many members of our LUMIN and school staff were present to witness the event and join in the celebration. Praise God for the work of Pastor Paul Peckman, Pamela Amling and all our Pilgrim teachers and staff. • 28 members of our Granville school family worshiped this morning in the school's chapel as Berea Lutheran Church's outreach initiative is gaining traction under the leadership of Pastor Jeff Mueller. Trenae Howard, Kathy Mimis and all our Granville teachers are working hard to establish Berea/Granville as a regular worship site.
