A Happy Ending, the story of Liu Hanzhen |
Liu Hanzhen is more than 80 years old. Her face is a map of wrinkles and though she has lost most of her teeth her smile is charming. Her clothing, which Liu still makes herself, is adorned with exquisite plum blossom buttons. |
"I was born in 1931 in a village near Kang Le (the leprosy rehab village where she lives now). I have one sister and three brothers. Children were not able to go to school in those days. My eldest brother worked in the landlord's home to support the family. My mother passed away when I was five years old. I had too many siblings. My father could not afford to feed so many mouths so I was sent away to live with another family. Life with my adoptive family was difficult. They were not kind and I rarely had a full meal. I ran away and lived in the nearby graveyard without shelter, eating scraps and begging for food. I lived like this for two years. Eventually my father found out and took me back." read more |

Greetings! I would like to wish you a peaceful and prosperous Year of the Snake. 2013 promises to be another exciting and challenging year ahead. In addition to our current work, treating disabilities in the 9 villages, we are expanding our service to include a nutrition program for malnourished children in these villages. We are grateful to have received donations and support for this new program. We will also be increasing our activities in hygiene and health education. It is an important service that will improve the living conditions in the villages.
We are honoured and pleased to have been selected by the Asian Charitable Services (ACS) to participate in their Fund Raising Strategy Project in January and February, 2013. ACS is a registered non-profit organization in Hong Kong that aims at empowering and equipping non-profit organizations to build their capacity and improve their fundraising and long term planning. This involves and intensive three session workshop and I am confident that our organization will have much to gain from attending these workshops.
I am looking forward to a great year ahead with renewed energy and focus in our organization. Our dedicated staff and our devoted Board Members are ready to meet the challenge and to continue our work for the people affected by leprosy. We shall keep you updated on our work and we look forward to your continued support.
Warm regards,
Tony Leung
