Help us help five adult ed programs in Louisiana that suffered extreme loss due to the severe flooding that took place recently. COABE and our state association partner, Louisiana Association for Public Adult and Community Education (LAPCAE) have pledged to donate dollar for dollar up to $1,000 each for each program. We hope to raise enough to help the programs rebuild.

Dear members,
As we head into the new school year, I wanted to share with you a number of exciting initiatives that are under way! As you are likely aware, COABE is hosting its second Capitol Hill Day, on September 28, 2016 during Adult Ed and Family Literacy Week. With special thanks to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, COABE will bring together state association leaders from around the country in an effort to impact our legislators in a more meaningful way. We will also be shooting a video during this event as a companion to the "Our Voices" mini video series that shine a light on adult education (HERE).

Additionally, we have put together a number of Fact Sheets on the value of Adult Education, along with the issues and consequences of the lack of funding. Please use these resources to educate others on the challenges our field is facing.

We hope that you will take advantage of Adult Ed and Family Literacy Week to reach out to your legislators and the media as well! With this in mind, we have developed fact sheets (HERE) and a Media Outreach Toolkit (HERE) and hosted a webinar in July to give you tools and tips for reaching out to the media (HERE). Additionally, we will be co hosting a webinar on September 21st to provide you with more tips and ideas for making the most of this important week! Register (HERE) and join the discussion at #capitolhillday. You can also download the free COABE App and post what you are doing (HERE). Together, we can all make this a wonderful week showcasing the value of Adult Education!

Sincerely,

Sharon Bonney
Executive Director

COABE GOVERNMENT RELATIONS REPORT

Since Congress is on its extended summer recess (also called "District Work Week," in the House, and "State Work Period," in the Senate), we thought it would be a good idea to review how our laws are made. This information is important because it helps to inform COABE's legislative strategy, Hill visits, and your education and advocacy activities.

Many people find the legislative process--how laws are proposed, passed, and funded by the U.S. Congress--to be arcane, but this Report attempts to demystify two aspects of the process: Authorizations and Appropriations.

RESEARCH TO PRACTICE
On September 15th, COABE will launch its new Research to Practice Initiative. Each month, we will feature a topic which will highlight articles from our peer-reviewed Journal, webinars by leading experts and national presenters, as well as related resources in our Adult Educator's Resource. You can join in  the discussion via social media and our COABE App by using #COABEJournal.

This Research to Practice Initiative is provided in partnership with Essential Education.
