Title: Developing Human Capital in the Age of WIOA
As states are moving forward with developing unified and combined state plans under WIOA, the needs of adult education classrooms are evolving. This presentation focuses on the high-level details of WIOA--why the law was written to include a customer focus; the influences globally on the workforce; and the importance of career pathways. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the WIOA legislation and what drivers led to the passing of the act, as well as practical applications and strategies for implementation.

We are excited to share that COABE's Adult Student of the Year, Margo Hudson--a Seeds of Literacy graduate and tutor--led the Pledge of Allegiance at the Republican National Convention (RNC), on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at 7:30 pm.
Margo received the 2016 National Adult Learner of the Year award, from the Commission on Adult Basic Education, and the 2016 Courage Award, from Governor John Kasich,
in April 2016. Both awards recognized her intense, personal commitment to adult education.

Watch a short video about Margo (here).

Over 95 percent of jobs created during the recovery have gone to workers with at least some college education, while those with a high school diploma or less are being left behind. America's Divided Recovery: College Haves and Have-Nots reveals that those with at least some college education have captured 11.5 million of the 11.6 million jobs created during the recovery. While jobs are back, they are not the same jobs lost during the recession. The Great Recession decimated low-skill blue-collar and clerical jobs, whereas the recovery added primarily high-skill managerial and professional jobs. Learn more here.

Adult educators know that learners who have limited reading, math, or English skills often come up with creative solutions to do their jobs. For example, a learner might use her cell phone to take a picture of the order-input screen at her fast-food job so she can practice the vocabulary at home. Or she might rely on her teenage son's help with Excel to generate her monthly sales report. National Skills Coalition is looking for real-life examples of these situations, focusing on learners who work in retail, hospitality, food service, or entry-level healthcare jobs.

If you have a story to share, we want to hear it! Please contact Amanda Bergson-Shilcock at amandabs@nationalskillscoalition.org and let us know if you would prefer to share the story in a brief phone interview or by submitting a short e-mail. Please Note: We do NOT need to know the name of the learner or the employer. Your name and/or your organization's name will be credited in the "Acknowledgements" section of our report, unless you prefer otherwise. Deadline: August 20, 2016.

The National Skills Coalition is a COABE 2017 conference strand partner.
