Title: Engage the Media! Make your case for funding and prepare now to tell your story during Adult Ed and Family Literacy Week and throughout the year.
The work of adult educators and your successes remain largely unsung - yet your stories are compelling, compassionate and highly relevant to the communities you serve. Take advantage of the slower pace of summer to prepare to showcase your programs, teachers and students to the news media in your area, for September's Adult Ed and Family Literacy Week and year-round. This webinar, with the team that's led COABE's communications outreach, will help you become an even more powerful voice for funding, strengthening and celebrating basic adult education in your community and state.

Dear COABE Members:
We have been talking to two major foundation funders about their potential interest in providing resources to support COABE's work, particularly as it connects adult basic education to efforts to improve outcomes of adult learners in developmental education leading to post-secondary degrees and credentials.
To strengthen our case for funding, which would enable us to give back generously to the field, could you please take a moment to answer a few short questions in our survey (HERE)? All survey participants will be entered into a drawing for a $500 Amazon gift card. The drawing closes on June 15th, and the winner will be announced on our website and via our monthly Membership Update, on July 1st. Sincerely, Sharon Bonney Executive Director

Context Clues Campaign Promotes Summer Reading
This summer, DoSomething.org and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation have teamed up for an interactive texting mystery game that inspires students to keep their reading and literacy skills sharp while taking a break from classes. Each day of participation unlocks the potential to win a $5,000 scholarship from DoSomething.org and a donation to a local library from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Players can join the game, May 17 through July 31, by texting READ to 38383 or visiting Context Clues.
Context Clues was created to prevent the "summer slide," otherwise known as the growing achievement gap between students who read over the summer and those who do not. The interactive text message game is built around the national Common Core reading standards to encourage young people to read over the summer and give them access to quality reading materials. Players will solve a mystery using different literacy-boosting puzzles and challenges in order to win. At the end of the game, users will be given an SMS locator to find their local library and will also receive a suggested reading list. Learn more ( HERE).

Quality Performance Assessment Summer Institute
The time is ripe to explore new avenues to measure what students know and can do. The passing of the
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) reduces the amount of standardized testing in schools - meaning more time for students to learn and teachers to teach. States, districts, and schools will be empowered to make decisions to ensure every student has an opportunity to a high-quality education.
The Quality Performance Assessment (QPA) framework allows educators to create performance tasks that measure students' deeper mastery of content and the skills, in order to engage and prepare a diverse community of students for college, career, and life in the 21st century. The QPA model offers an accurate, reliable, and flexible alternative to measuring student knowledge and skills.
Plans are underway for adult education practitioners to participate as a cohort in the Quality Performance Assessment Summer Institute, offered by the Center for Collaborative Education. You are welcome to attend a special summer institute, on July 18-21, 2016, at Simmons College, in Boston, MA. Contact Donna Chambers if you have questions.
