Adult Ed HSE Survey

New York State currently has the TASC as the only HSE test.  The New York City Coalition for Adult Literacy would like to learn more about how the HSE process is going in other states, particularly the experiences of adult education providers with preparing students to take the different tests (GED, HiSET, or TASC), as well as the pros and cons of offering multiple tests as a path to a state high school equivalency diploma.

The New York Coalition for Adult Literacy has developed a 12 question survey to gather input from anyone working in adult education; it is open through 1/8/16. Click here to complete the survey now.

Membership in COABE has many advantages, including being able to nominate an individual to receive one of COABE's prestigious awards, incentive grants, or scholarships! Each year at our annual conference, COABE gives the following awards:
  • Adult Learner of the Year
  • Administrator of the Year
  • Outstanding Teacher of the Year
COABE members may nominate individuals for these awards; however, self-nominations will not be accepted. Award recipients in each of these categories are recognized at the annual COABE national conference, during the awards luncheon, and receive a $1,650.00 financial award to help defray costs associated with conference attendance, including transportation and hotel accommodations. As an added bonus, the successful nominators receive a complimentary conference registration for the conference where the award is presented.

Additionally, scholarships and incentive grants are available. Scholarship recipients receive a $2,000.00 financial award. Incentive grant recipients receive a $1,500.00 financial stipend and $750.00 travel stipend to present on their projects at the annual conference. All COABE members may apply for incentive grants or scholarships.

With the magnitude of these national level awards and the recognition they bring to individuals and programs, we strongly encourage all COABE members to nominate someone today. State associations and large group members may also  nominate their state-wide winners for the COABE national awards.

Click here to nominate someone today! Submissions are due by January 31, 2016, and winners will be honored at the COABE national conference in Dallas, Texas, on April 11, 2016.

Pictures Needed for Public Affairs Campaign Video

As an outgrowth of our strategic planning that took place last year, COABE is launching a public affairs campaign to raise the visibility of adult education nationwide. We are in the process of developing a compelling video, generously sponsored by Houghton Miffling Harcourt, and are seeking pictures of adult education. Do you have pictures or videos of adult ed students? Send them to us at publicaffairs@coabe.org for inclusion in our video!
