Greetings!

Warmer weather is here and we are all spending more time outdoors. This means more sun exposure and more need for sunscreen. Most of our sun exposure occurs in childhood, so it is especially important for us to protect our children with sunscreen (at least 15 spf is recommended, but the more protection the better). To minimize sun exposure, try to avoid being outdoors at the peak hours (10am - 4pm). A good rule of thumb is that if your shadow is smaller than you, then you are exposing your skin to a very significant amount of ultraviolet light.

It is important to use sunscreen when we are at the beach or the pool, but it is also very important to protect ourselves and our children from sun exposure when spending a lot of time with other outdoor activities. If our children spend a significant amout of time playing sports, being spectators, at playgrounds (this includes daycare and school), etc., then it is important to use sunscreen. It is best to apply suncreen 30 minutes before sun exposure. Additionally, when swimming, it is very important to reapply your sunscreen at least every hour because the sunscreen will get washed off by the water.

Sunburns increase the chance of acquiring skin cancer later in life, but understanding the importance of protecting our skin and our children's skin will help decrease the chance significantly. Suncreen is easy to apply and protects the body's largest organ, our skin. So enjoy Florida's sunshine and do it safely!

Thank you & have a great day,

Dr. Jose Jimenez

Baby Teeth Are Important!
Tooth decay can develop as soon as the first tooth appears. It's important to care for your child's baby teeth because they act as placeholders for adult teeth. If baby teeth are lost too early, the teeth that are left may move and not leave any room for the adult teeth to come in. And tooth decay in baby teeth can be painful and cause health problems like infections, which can at times be life-threatening. It can also lead to teasing and speech development problems.

Helping Children Deal with a Tragedy:
It almost goes without saying that parents, teachers, and other caregivers play a critical role in helping children
cope with crises. The natural instinct is to put one's own needs aside and tend to children first. It is extremely important, however, for caregivers to monitor their own reactions and take care of their own needs.

A Teenager's Nutritional Needs
A surge in appetite around the age of ten in girls and twelve in boys foreshadows the growth spurt of puberty. How much of a surge? Let's just say that Mom and Dad might want to oil the hinges on the refrigerator door and start stockpiling a small cache of their own favorite snacks underneath the bed!
