IAHU President's Message
null
IAHU President
Trent Sutton.

I was on an enrollment phone call with a representative from Healthcare.gov a few weeks ago.  Like many of you, I have done enough of these to know the point at which the representative asks for the agent's name and NPN number and was ready to provide such.  However, during this call the question was never asked.  When I inquired as to why, the representative informed me that SHE was the one assisting with the enrollment so there was no need to list the agent or broker providing assistance.  After arguing and forcing her to read the question as listed she begrudgingly entered my name and NPN as the agent.

I have used the following analogy many times while discussing the healthcare.gov enrollment system - I know how to drive a car, but that doesn't mean I know (or even care) how a radiator, distributer cap, or flux capacitor work.  However, when my car breaks down my mechanic certainly better know how those particular parts work and can diagnose and fix problems rather than simply read a script.   When it comes to health insurance, IAHU members understand how the components "under the hood" work.  Unfortunately in the healthcare.gov system finding a person to solve technical problems is akin to searching for a needle in a haystack.

I share these stories not to whine, but to highlight the importance of knowledgeable agents in the process and the need for a workable system allowing us to do our jobs.  While IAHU and NAHU will continue to advocate for solutions, it is reaffirmed to me each day that the best solution for Idahoans is to have our own state controlled enrollment system. I hope that you will take the opportunity to join with myself and other members in making our voices heard during our Day on the Hill event next Tuesday February 18th. I encourage you to reach out to your representatives and set a time to meet with them.  IAHU has prepared talking points for you to assist in these discussions.  Our legislators need to see what we do, and be reminded of the critical role that we play.

As we all help carry a bit of the load together, and speak with one voice, we can find solutions to the problems facing our industry tomorrow and into the future.

See you next Tuesday!

Key Contact Program

IAHU Key Contacts are members who either currently have, or are willing to develop relationships with members of the Idaho Legislature. They may be called upon to assist in the delivery of PAC contributions, or to make contact with their lawmakers during the legislative session. While most Key Contacts live in the  district of the lawmaker they cover, it is possible to serve as a Key Contact for a lawmaker from another district if a previous relationship exists.
