DHA Natur Introduced To Aquaculture Market
ADM is poised to revolutionize the aquaculture market with a new, highly-concentrated source of Omega-3 fatty acid, DHA Natur™.

DHA Natur is a dried algae biomass rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This new source of DHA provides the aquaculture industry with a sustainable alternative to fish oil sourced from commercially-reared and wild-captured fish. The world's fish stock, the current global source for fish oil, is depleting. This depletion, coupled with increased costs and a growing demand for Omega-3 as a dietary supplement, has made the creation of an alternative Omega-3 fatty acid source a crucial need for the industry.

"ADM Animal Nutrition has reached a significant milestone by bringing to the market a sustainably-produced, microalgae product, DHA Natur™," said Peter Bergstrom, international business manager for ADM Animal Nutrition. "The market interest for an alternative source of DHA is significant, and we are currently scaling up production to meet the increasing demand."

DHA Natur is a highly-concentrated, non-genetically modified, vegetable source of DHA. It is derived through a controlled fermentation process utilizing ADM's micro algae-based technology that allows heterotrophic algae to be produced more efficiently than phototrophic algae. DHA Natur is comprised of 17-20 percent (as-is basis) DHA and is a high-quality meal product that is free of heavy metals and pesticides. DHA Natur is currently approved for use in the European Union and Chile, with plans to secure regulatory approval in the U.S. and Canada in the near future.

Warmer (just plain HOT in many areas) Weather is Here
Here comes heat stress and a loss of performance as feed intakes and physiology are adversely affected.  We're fortunate to have a couple of technologies proven to limit the negative impact of heat stress.

Thermal Care™ 4S was designed to illicit specific physiological responses to assist pigs in dealing with heat stress vasodilation and immune modulation.  We'll have some exciting new data and look forward to sharing.  Feeding recommendations are 4 lb/ton for sows and boars, 2-4 lb/ton for grow-finish and 1-2 lb/ton for nursery pigs.  For a quick review of the product and a timely testimonial, take the opportunity to review the following two items:

Easyzyme®* is another specialty ingredient that has applications for enhancing performance during heat stress.  Many times, a nutritional solution to abating heat stress is to add fat to the diet which increases caloric content of the diet in addition to lowering heat increments in the digestion process.  We know from previous research that 1 lb/ton of Easyzyme will replace 30 lb/ton of fat in the diet while maintaining similar performance.  I encourage you to take the opportunity to review the following Research Review and the impact Easyzyme has when fed to pigs in late finishing during periods of heat stress.

Dairy

The following information provided by Bill Earley, Dairy Product Portfolio Manager...

Summer Product Showcase & SEM Boosters
As there is a great deal of belt-tightening going on in the dairy industry today, the selection of what additives will stay in the diet is something you contend with on a daily basis.   With that, we have to work closely with customers on making wise decisions and not knee-jerk reactions.  If an additive was beneficial enough to put in at $22 milk, is it good enough to keep in at $14?  Every farm is different as to what additives may be most effective in supporting their unique production, component and/or health needs.  With that, I think it is critical to maintain those additives within the diet that will support milk and component production through the heat of summer and those additives that spread the investment across several economic factors.

Summer-time additives that I feel need to be considered as individual ingredients, or in combination with others on the list, include:
  • Prosponse® Yeast in all dairy diets to assist in maintaining intake, appropriate rumen pH and fiber digestibility.
  • Buffer Pak providing a combination of buffering agents to support butterfat formation, maintain intake, and rumen pH.
  • DCAD Plus or Energy Booster K helps maintain potassium lost in hot weather conditions which helps to maintain butterfat production and milk production
  • Hay & Hay Silage Preservatives -- Nothing will provide a more significant return on investment than ensuring that the foundation of the diet is of high-quality and provides the potential for maximum productivity.  It begins with good forage harvesting, packing and storage management. Our preservative line will do an excellent job in helping maintain good-quality forage whether that be leaf retention and quality of hay or optimizing haylage fermentation.
  • Ration Guard®* -- If TMRs are fed once daily and begin to heat, secondary fermentation can occur.  Ration Guard introduction into the TMR during the summer can prevent this secondary fermentation from occurring, resulting in improved intakes and maintenance of feed quality.
  • Enertia® -- To optimize energy intake once degradable fat levels are met in the diet.
  • Natural-Source Vitamin E -- As intakes are suppressed under heat stress conditions, we need to optimize the antioxidant levels in the diet.  Natural -source vitamin E provides the best bioavailable source of E to help support this need.
  • Thermal Care™ -- There is nothing better on the market to help minimize the adverse financial effects of heat stress.  This is one of those products where its cost can be spread across several impactful areas including milk production support, optimizing rumen function and bolstering animal immunity.

Forage Preservative Program -- Period Two Underway
Just a reminder to have any customers that contracted forage preservative products during period two of the program (June-August) to place their orders as it is the time when others, including those that have not contracted, will be vying for product as well.

Milk Specialties Update
We are excited about the change to Milk Specialties as we share the common goal to grow our milk replacer in every market.   The Dairy Leadership Team has been very impressed with their production, technical, marketing and sales management teams as we go through the transition process.  It is expected that the first product that will be coming out of their New Holstein, Wisconsin, milk replacer plant will be the first week of July.   One important consideration is knowing the sales support people in your area.  This information has been provided but it warrants repeating.  Please find below the contact information for the respective Milk Specialties Sales Representatives across the country that are committed to helping you grow your calf milk replacer business.  They will be reaching out to you within the next couple of weeks if they haven't done so already.

Global Safety Week Reminders
As I write this we are embarking on our annual Global Safety Week.  This is a time to reflect on staying safe as we go through our daily routines on the road and on the farm.  Here are some of the safety reminders that come to mind:
  • Always wear your safety belt and use hands-free communications; preferably pull over when making or returning phone calls to be safe.
  • Always keep your cell phone charged.
  • Maintain your vehicle in good repair including tires, windshield wipers and oil changes.
  • Have an emergency road kit in your vehicle.
  • Be aware of farm equipment, employees, children and others when pulling into farms.
  • Always let someone know when you are conducting herd evaluations and preferably have someone with you.
  • Always know when there is a bull being housed on the farm and where it is at all times.  Don't enter pens with bulls.
  • Be aware when taking silage/forage samples as falling silage can kill. Never enter an upright silo without having someone else present.
Remember who you come home safely for each and every day......your family and loved ones depend on you!

The Bottom Line Report linked below shares performance data from a study conducted at Tulare, CA. The economic advantage to including Thermal Care R in the diet of heat-stressed lactating dairy cows was $1.20/hd/day. Read more below...

Introducing NEW ADM Swine Show Feed (#12368AGN24)

We are excited to announce that we now have a new Swine Show Feed specifically positioned for Customers who buy their feed off the shelf and who are more interested in the participation aspect of a show, than they are in the competition of a show.

ADM Swine Show Feed is a lower cost, complete ration in regular pellet form that is designed for feeding show pigs at local shows. This product is not intended for show pigs that require the extra value provided by MoorMan's ShowTec brand show feed. Swine Show Feed offers a complement of nutrients at an economical price for feeding show pigs from 60 lb to show weight. Unlike MoorMan's ShowTec complete feeds, this product uses collective terms, opportunity ingredients and least cost formulation.

Below is a picture of the bag for Swine Show Feed which should have a very high customer shelf appeal especially to the walk-in Customer buying off the shelf. This product is not eligible for the LYA Program. Manufacturing and availability of this product will be limited based on local demand for this type of product. It will be manufactured in Quincy, IL. Please work with your Manager, Sales Coordinator and Pricing to get it floor stocked or manufactured at additional plants and added to your price list as needed.

When Health & Production Matter CitriStim logo
CitriStim® consists of a unique strain of yeast, Pichia guilliermondii, used in the production of ADM citric acid. As a whole-cell product, CitriStim is consistently rich in immune factors, including nucleic acids, mannans, and beta-glucan. Basic research and extensive field application show that this unique organism exerts a powerful influence on three areas:
  • Immunity. CitriStim triggers key natural body defense mechanisms and immune signaling assists in preserving critical vital nutrients.
  • Gut health. Pathogens adhere to Pichia, instead of intestinal cells, which allows for a more rapid clearing of pathogens and allows for a positive effect on growth.
  • Animal performance. Research shows better performance in numerous species and production systems.
