Don't Become Complacent, Don't Become a Statistic:
Silage Avalanches Can Be a Killer
We do it almost daily and think nothing of it--take forage samples from a customer's or prospect's bunker silo. I've done it hundreds of times, as you have too. It has become second nature right? Sure, there are many dangers on farms, but silage piles? There are increasing stories involving bunker silo and drive-over pile related injuries and deaths. Read through the following actual occurences and consider what if it had involved you, one of your customers or colleagues:
- Six tons of haylage in a bunker silo collapsed on an individual causing in a spinal cord injury resulting in the injured person becoming a quadriplegic. (WI)
- Nutritionist almost loses his life taking samples from a bunker silo with a 32-foot feed out face while standing 20 feet from the face; 12 tons of silage collapsed on him. (TX)
- Producer is entrapped under three tons of silage, losing his life (PA)
- Dairy nutritionist was heading back to his vehicle after taking a silage sample from a bunker silo when "the sun went out and he couldn't see any light," as almost 20 tons of silage broke away from the pile. (CA)
- Eleven-year-old boy dies riding his bike next to a feed pile when a 25-foot high pile of silage collapsed on him. After the pile fell on him, it took over 20 minutes to find him, unfortunately, at that point he was deceased. (NH)
As we embark on another silage harvest, know the dangers of silage avalanches; know that conditions can change rapidly without warning. Understand the safeguards you and your customers need to take. Educate them on the management practices that will help minimize the risk. Work with them to obtain representative samples with a bucket loader ahead of your visit or while you're there. I know this may seem extreme because we never think this could happen to us....but then again...neither did the nutritionists and other individuals highlighted in these stories.

Chromium Propionate: A Consideration within Dairy Diets On September 1, Dr. Brian Lammers led a webinar involving the Kemin dairy technical team. During this webinar, several attributes of chromium addition to dairy diets was shared:
ü When chromium addition is requested in our dairy formulas, KemTRACE®*; a highly bioavailable organic source of chromium and the only chromium source permitted for dairy cattle is used.
ü Chromium enables the animal to be more energy efficient due to optimization of glucose and NEFA (non-esterified fatty acid) metabolism.
ü Numerous studies noted improvement in dry matter intake and milk production.
ü With better energy utilization, there is a reduction in negative energy balance which positively impacts reproductive efficiency in the animal. Other studies noted better immune function, feed efficiency and ability to assist in combating heat stress.
ü Chromium addition has the potential to provide benefits across several key economic areas and thus provide a solid return on investment.
ü The feeding rate is not to exceed 500 ppb with benefits from transition through late lactation.
ü View the webinar in its entirety and learn more about chromium biology and application in dairy diets. This and other dairy webinars are available on the portal within the dairy section under the Presentations, Education tab.
