Beef Med Code Best Practice Update

With the launch of the new beef mineral lines, an attempt has been made to issue a pre-approved med code list. While the intent was sound, it has come to our attention that this approach is adding undue stress and complexity to our business. Hence, Beef Business Management has elected to administer the issuance of med codes for beef products in a different manner.

Effective April 7, 2015, the ADM ANI sales team, with support from their sales managers, will now be able to request additional med codes. Prior to the product being ordered, the request must be approved by Beef Business Management to review applicability and eliminate redundancies.

While it will now be easier to add med codes, DO NOT commit an order to any customer until the request has been approved and priced in Oracle. The requested med code will not automatically be set up without beef management approval. Lastly, fewer product SKUs ensures multiple efficiencies, so a continued focus to work with the pre-approved med codes is still the best approach.

We have put together our new offering of creep feeds as part of the Beef "Go Forward" Vision. The three platforms within the creep offering will be AminoGain, Rough-N-Readyand Beef Creep. Click above title for their individual features. All products are available in bulk or bag.

NurseTrate PowerGRO bag
New NurseTrate® PowerGRO--The Next Generation in Multiple Protein Formulation

As whey proteins continue to increase in price due to human nutrition and export competition, the reality is that alternatives for milk proteins need to continue to be refined to enable equitable performance with reduced milk protein addition within milk replacers.

LOL-Animal Milk Products has been researching alternatives for some time. As a result, NurseTrate PowerGRO was developed and will be replacing the existing PRO-Blend multiple protein product. PowerGRO is formulated with a similar concept to the design of human baby formula; providing an exacting balance of complementary proteins.

In addition, NurseTrate PowerGRO contains ADM SI-InsideSM to enhance feed digestion and optimize calf health and growth performance.

What is NurseTrate PowerGRO?
  • PowerGRO is the next generation of multiple protein calf milk replacers.
  • PowerGRO is a "designer" blend of proteins combined to enhance the qualities of each.
  • PowerGRO utilizes a similar approach used in infant baby formulas based upon a complex blend of highly digestible proteins that complement each other.
  • The result is a more competitively priced milk replacer with research indicating equitable or superior performance to all-milk formulation.
PowerGRO provides 22% CP, 16% fat and ADM SI-Inside. It is available in three options (#35192AAA non-medicated, #35192DKE with Bovatec, and #35192PMA with Bovatec & ClariFly®*)

Let's Make Certain Our Customers' & Prospects' Dairies Are No Fly Zones

Horn Fly

Feed-Through Protection Without Milk Withdrawal Worries

As it gets warmer, we all are beginning to see the appearance of insects. All fly species are an economic detriment to dairymen. From calves through lactation, flies adversely affect performance, elevate stress levels, and provide a vector for disease (mastitis organism transmission, brucellosis, anthrax, pinkeye, etc.). In a recent Progressive Dairyman article, in order to maintain Grade A status, "the Department of Agriculture's Grade A Pasteurized Milk Ordinance specifies the responsibility of dairy producers to conscientiously reduce fly popluations on their farm. Dairy and health inspectors are becoming more conscientious of fly infestation on farms." This article was originally published at www.progressivedairy.com, the website of Progressive Dairyman magazine. Also, in some counties, inspectors are demanding producers have an integrated pest management program in place.

Let's put a pencil to it:

  • Per the above referenced article, University studies from Cornell, Purdue, and the University of Tennessee, peg milk losses associated with fly infestation to be 10%-20%.
  • Let's take a 300-cow dairy milking 80 lb of milk and mailbox milk prices of $15, $18, and $20/cwt.
  • Assume five months of fly infestation (in most, but not all areas); May-September
  • 300 cows x 80 lb x 150 days = 36,000 cwt of milk produced normally
  • 10% reduction in milk = 36,000 cwt of milk produced normally x 0.10 = -3,600 cwt of milk lost (0.8 lb/cow/day); at $15/cwt = $54,000/5 months/300 cows = -$36/cow/month or a loss of $1.20/cow/day; at $18/cwt = $64,800/5 months/300 cows = $43.20/cow/month or a loss of $1.44/cow/day; and at $20/cwt = $72,000/5 months/300 cows = $48/cow/month or a loss of $1.60/cow/month
  • 20% reduction in milk = 36,000 cwt of milk produced normally x 0.20 = -7,200 cwt of milk lost (1.6 lb/cow/day); at $15/cwt = $108,000/5 months/300 cows = $72/cow/month or a loss of $2.40/cow/day; at $18/cwt = $129,600/5 months/300 cows = $86.40/cow/month or a loss of $2.88/cow/day; and at $20/cwt = $144,000/5 months/300 cows = $96/cow/month or a loss of $3.20/cow/day

IGR Return with (#84390016) IGR Cattle Concentrate (Portland, MI, retail price of 4-7-15 used in this example):

  • $122.85/25 lb bag = $4.914/lb
  • Want 0.0125 lb to 0.025 lb consumption (avg. 0.01875 lb) of IGR Cattle Concentrate per 100 lb of body weight per month
  • 1,400-lb cow (14 cwt)
  • 14 cwt x 0.01875 lb = 0.2625 lb of IGR Concentrate needed for a 1,400-lb cow/month or 0.00875/cow/day
  • 0.00875 lb/1,400-lb cow/day x $4.914/lb retail = $0.043/cow/day
  • $0.043 x 300 cows x 30 = $387/month or over a 5-month fly season = $1,935 investment
  • At a 10% milk loss and $15/cwt milk = $10,800 in milk loss/month or $1.20/cow daily milk loss
  • A $0.043 daily investment to prevent a $1.20 daily loss
  • As you can see, at a very conservative loss estimate and low milk price, IGR PAYS! Check on prices to add into your dairy custom formulations as well.

This doesn't take into consideration any disease incidence, such as mastitis nor the impact on the growth of heifer replacements that can increase the financial burden significantly.

Keeping dairies a No Fly Zone. We have the answer...IGR! Feed-through IGR provides an economical and convenient means to deliver effective horn fly population reduction for our customers and a way to open up new avenues of opportunity with prospects.

Thermal Care logoBackground
For over 10 years, ADM research as aggressively pursued natural nutritional solutions for reducing the performance slump caused by summer heat stress. Heat stress costs U.S. dairy producers over one billion dollars each year.1 Providing solutions to the challenges that producers and our customers face daily is the core of our business. Thermal Care™ R was developed to help alleviate heat stress in dairy cows. Key ingredients in Thermal Care R have been selected based on their ability to:
  • Support rumen function
  • Increase feed and water intake
  • Enhance immune function
  • Dissipate body heat
Please review the trial results from the two most recent Bottom Line Reports, that illustrate the economic returns Thermal Care R can deliver to your customers' bottom line.

Bottom Line Report #1: Thermal Care R Helps Cows Maintain Performance During Heat Stress (Field Trials)
  • Multiple studies conducted on commercial dairy farms across the US have demonstrated advantages of feeding Thermal Care R to lactating dairy cattle during heat stress.
  • Implications:  When using data from these studies in conjunction with December 2014 milk component and feed prices, the economic advantage of using Thermal Care R in lactation rations was $0.67/hd/d. This advantage would lead to a $335 increase in profit per day on a 500-head dairy farm.
Bottom Line Report #2: University Trials Indicate Thermal Care R Decreases Losses During Heat Stress
  • Trials conducted at the University of Georgia (UGA) and Arizona State University (ASU) have demonstrated the advantages of feeding Thermal Care R to lactating dairy cattle during heat stress.
  • Implications:  When using data from these studies in conjunction with December 2014 milk component and feed prices, the economic advantage of using Thermal Care R in lactation rations was $0.58/hd/d. This advantage would lead to a $290 increase in profit per day on a 500-head dairy farm.

For additional results, observations and data please refer to the two new Bottom Line Reports.

Introducing ADM's New MoorMan's ShowTec Sale Burst CTC/DEN #21206AYWE4

First there was Burst, then there was Final Burst - and now introducing NEW MoorMan's® ShowTec® Sale Burst CTC/DEN

Product Positioning
Sale Burst is a complete mini-pelleted feed designed for today's starting/growing show pigs being fed for show pig sales or for pigs in early exhibition feeding programs. It is formulated for feeding to show pigs weighing 35 to 75 lb body weight.
Sale Burst (#21206AYWE4) will completely replace Sale Prep. As inventories of Sale Prep are depleted at the location you receive feed from - its availability will be ended and new Sale Burst will be its replacement.

New Sale Burst has been previewed by some top feeders. They have told us it has excellent palatability and is just the right combination they are looking for to bridge the gap for the pigs at the stage after Burst - but before our developers/finishers. It combines the goodies in Burst and Final Burst - but designed to give the look needed by pigs at this stage. Join the top feeders that evaluated it - and responded to us by saying they are "all in" with this new product - that it is just what they needed.

The new product page is available on the portal and the Swine Quick Reference Guides have been updated with Sale Burst replacing Sale Prep.

Discontinuing #12006AXU ShowTec Sale Prep Starter
As a result of the FDA's GFI 213 changes to antibiotic use, Zoetis has discontinued Aureo S-P 250 Type B Medicated Feed, as it contained penicillin and a production claim (growth promotion and feed efficiency). The new FDA approved use excludes penicillin and the production claim. ADM Alliance Nutrition will be switching product medication as soon as our current inventory has been depleted. Currently, #12006AXU ShowTec Sale Prep Starter is the only show feed product sold within the past year containing the Aureo S-P 250 medication.

ADM's MoorMan's® ShowTec® AminoGain Goat
This product has been embraced by the show goat industry and the product has achieved consistent growth as the word has spread. As soon as current supplies are depleted, we will be increasing the energy content by increasing the fat level from 3% to 4% to help soften goats up just a bit.

New ShowTec® Bags and Bag Standards

The link below will take you to the new ShowTec bag designs, and the products that go in each bag. Please note that the transition will be based on inventories at each plant. Unfortunately, since current inventories vary between plants, this changeover will be a gradual process. Please work to inform your customers of these changes with our bags.

Feed Coupon Updates

We have completed over a year of offering coupons. The results have been an increase in sales for those dealers using coupons. The most widely used coupons have been the pre-printed coupons given to customers by dealers in their stores or at promotional events. Since these coupons are handed out close to the point-of-purchase, the pre-printed coupons have been the most effective in generating sales and repeat business. The current pre-printed coupon offers available are:

Patriot® -- $15 off 20 bags loyalty coupon

Pen Pals® Rabbit -- $20 off 20 bags loyalty coupon

Proud Paws® Pet Foods -- $20 off 10 bags loyalty coupon

Pen Pals Chicken -- $2.00 off one bag (see details in 2015 Chick Days below)

GRO & GLO Equine Event Days -- $5.00 off one bag

ShowTec® Event Days -- $4.00 off one bag

The on-line coupons have expired and will not be renewed. However, we will use on-line coupon offers in the future for special product promotions, such as new products or as an incentive for a customer to try one of the higher value products. We would encourage you to utilize the pre-printed "loyalty coupons." These are index card size coupons, and it is recommended the dealer keep them at their place of business. When the customer returns to make a purchase, it is noted on the back of the coupon. Once the total number of purchases has been fulfilled on the loyalty coupon, the coupon can be redeemed. The loyalty coupon will keep the customer coming back to the store. Below is an example of the Patriot loyalty coupon, front and back:

BIOMIN Mycotoxin Survey Report 2014

The latest survey by BIOMIN analyzed more than 6,000 commodity samples from more than 60 countries to identify occurrence of mycotoxin-related risks to livestock. The article, "Corn harvest sampled for mycotoxins, " that appeared in the March 9, 2015, issue of Feedstuffs, summarizes the results of 504 corn harvest samples that were sourced from 27 states in the U.S. in order to identify the presence and potential risk posed to livestock animal production by six main mycotoxins.

Mycotoxins are fungal metabolites toxic to animals and humans that are produced by common molds found in almost all types of grains. The survey results provide insight on the incidence of aflatoxins (Afla), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 toxin, fumonisins (FUM) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in the 2014 corn harvest in the U.S.

The survey's main findings include:
  • 87% of samples tested positive for mycotoxins.
  • 36% of samples were co-contaminated with more than one mycotoxin.
  • DON poses a more frequent threat to livestock, with a prevalence of 62% and an average value of 1,441 parts per billion, although levels of FUM (55% prevalence and an average value of 4,512 ppb) were also a cause for concern.

(Please refer to the maps and Table 1 from the report.)

Both the article reprint and the original BIOMIN "Mycotoxin Survey 2014 - Focus on United States Corn Harvest Report" are available on the Specialty Ingredients Portal page under the Mycotoxin Reference Information section: The following are other Mycotoxin Reference Information available to you on the Portal.
