Commercial Swine

Just a quick reminder that our Parity Plus® products are now available - Parity Plus Sow 75 (12358), Parity Plus Sow Boost 25 (10042), Parity Plus Mintrate (10039) and Parity Plus Mintrate Cube (10040).   As part of our introduction, we talked about technologies and formulations that revolved around maximizing lifetime reproductive performance.  We look forward to hearing success stories from the field concerning:
  • Heavier pigs at birth and weaning
  • Decreased non-productive days
  • Acquired immunity
  • Better health stability
  • Higher sow salvage value
  • Better reproductive performance
  • Lower production costs
  • Reduced involuntary culling
Improving lifetime reproductive performance goes hand-in-hand with improving profitability.  We know as sow retention rates improve, parity structure of the sow herd also increases.  In today's industry, it's not uncommon to see replacement rates reach 55%-60%, meaning many females within the herd don't reach or spend much time in their reproductive prime.  The chart below shows the importance of sow longevity and the impact that has on progeny performance and profitability.
Comm. Swine graph
I'd encourage everyone to review the Parity Plus training webinar to review the products and programs associated with these exciting, new technologies:           https://service.admani.com/portal/page/portal/ADM_Alliance_Nutrition/Departments/Sales%20%20Marketing/CommercialSwine/Presentations/parityplus.vcr

  The Bottom Line header

Sweet Unique logoBackground
A field research study was conducted with dairy calves to compare the effects of feeding a commercial texturized starter or Sweet Unique cold pelleted starter on growth performance and cost of feeding to a common weight or per pound of gain. Both starter feeds provided comparable nutrient profiles. Calf performance showed advantages for Sweet Unique-fed calves. During the grower period it appears that Sweet Unique-fed calves outperformed texturized starter-fed calves with a 5-lb advantage in final weight and higher average daily intakes. Please refer to Table 1 and 2 in the report for supporting data.

Implications*
  • These data suggest calves fed Sweet Unique cold pelleted calf starter will outperform those receiving texturized calf starter.
  • Table 3 in the report indicates an economic benefit to feeding Sweet Unique with lower feed cost per pound of gain and decreased total feed cost through weaning, with total savings of about $0.90 per calf.
  • Feeding calves to an equal weight would also result in a decrease of $1.92 per calf in total feed cost for calves fed Sweet Unique.
Overall, this study would suggest that Sweet Unique calf starters are superior to texturized feeds in acceptability, performance and economics.

New ShowTec® Bags and Bag Standards

The link below will take you to the new ShowTec bag designs, and the products that go in each bag. Please note that the transition will be based on inventories at each plant. Unfortunately, since current inventories vary between plants, this changeover will be a gradual process. Please work to inform your customers of these changes with our bags.

You can find this information on the Portal (login required) by going to: Show Feed/Product Info/Containers, Standards/ShowTec Bag Standards

One thing you will especially want to note is the new bag that will be used for several of the current ShowTec top-dress products, including Showts™.

One last point - with recent strikes on the west coast ports, there has been a delay in receiving the new ShowTec bag that will be used for Showts (along with several other products). These bags arrived last week, but there was one batch of Showts made and packaged in the new ShowTec generic swine bag (see below). Please make sure to let your customers know of this short term substitution.

New Final Burst is Here!
MoorMan's® ShowTec® has added another tool to our Show Feed toolbox! MoorMan's ShowTec Final Burst (#24440AAAE4) is now available!

  • Final Burst is for the last phase of pre-show feeding.
  • Final Burst was initially developed for the state of Texas to compete in their marketplace.
  • Final Burst is a non-medicated mini-pellet designed for show pigs weighing 150 lb and up.
  • Final Burst provides that "final burst" of power needed to compete in the show ring.
  • Final Burst is currently being added to the ShowTec Swine QRG brochure (S9368) which will be available in Business Services in the next few weeks.

A postcard was developed by Vickie Matthews, ADM Inside Sales Representative, for Springfield, MO, area dealers and their customers. If you would like something similar for your customers, please let us know.

Additional marketing materials on Final Burst will be available later, but we want to move forward by making this product available now rather than waiting until all the marketing materials were available. The show feed industry tends to react more rapidly and responsively when there isn't an overabundance of new product advertising but rather kept more low-key and word-of-mouth from influencers in the industry. We believe Final Burst will make its greatest impact utilizing this style of marketing strategy. We will be developing marketing support materials for Final Burst very soon.

  • Encourage your customers and dealers to keep up on the latest with MoorMan's ShowTec by liking the ADM Alliance Nutrition - MoorMan's ShowTec Facebook page.
  • Direct your customers and dealers to the ADM Alliance Nutrition YouTube Channel to learn more about ShowTec products and feeding programs from our Specialists.

CitriStim logo
The peer reviewed article, "CitriStim Improved Performance and Modulated Immune Response Differently in Unstressed vs Challenged Turkeys" was just published in Poultry Science Journal (PSJ). This peer reviewed article was a new study conducted at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, The Ohio State University, Wooster, OH to explore the impact of CitriStim on intestinal immunity in turkey tom poults.

Newly hatched turkey tom poults were fed 0 (Control), 0.1 or 0.2% CitriStim.  At 6 and 15 weeks of age, half the turkeys were injected with 0.25 mg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) per kg of body weight.  The effects of CitriStim on performance, gut morphology, and immune health were measured both during normal conditions and as a response to the LPS immune challenge.

The research findings showed...
  • At the end of the feeding period turkeys fed CitriStim exhibited improved turkey growth rate. Compared to Control, addition of 0.1% or 0.2% CitriStim improved feed conversion by 8% and 14%, respectively, from week 12 to 15 of the trial. The feed conversion was improved by 6% and 4.75%, respectively, for the whole cycle (hatch to 15 weeks of age).
  • When the turkey poults were not exposed to immune stress, regulatory T cells and Interleukin 10, both anti-inflammatory immune markers, were increased in the cecal tonsil cells at both 6 and 15 weeks.  This is consistent with observations on broilers.
  • When the poults were exposed to the immune stress of an LPS challenge, CitriStim dramatically increased the birds' inflammatory response at both 6 and 15 weeks-as evidenced by increased macrophage activity in the spleen, greater production of inflammatory immune markers (Interleukin-1), and suppression of anti-inflammatory immune markers (Interleukin -10).
In conclusion, as previously observed in broilers, turkeys fed CitriStim had higher Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria populations in the ceca. Again, these responses are consistent with previous observations on broilers. A summary of the article focusing on key take-home messages from the publication is available at the following link, for your reference.
Please contact us at ani.specialtyingredients@adm.com if you would like to receive reprints of the published article, copies of the new Interpretive Summary/Research Review, or if you have any questions. Feel free to share this information with your customers.
