Commercial Swine

Parity Plus logo

ADM Alliance Nutrition's swine team recently introduced the final platform of our commercial swine feeds, the Parity Plus® breeding herd program.  You've likely heard about the program first hand in meetings or at the webinar which was held on December 15.

In updating the program, our team focused on two primary goals: maximizing lifetime reproductive performance and minimizing the environmental impact of the various feeding programs.  Key technologies in each of the products that assist us in achieving these goals are:
  • Complexed (organic) zinc, copper and manganese - performance/longevity/environment
  • Chromium - performance/longevity
  • 50 % selenium yeast (organic) - performance/environment
  • Phytase - environment
There are four products, each containing the Parity Plus technologies that will make up the new platform of products:
  • Parity Plus Sow 75 (12358) - premix designed to meet the nutritional needs of boars, developing gilts and sows in both gestation and lactation
  • Parity Plus Mintrate (10039) - simply mix with grains at the appropriate levels to meet individual requirements for gilts, boars and sows.
  • Parity Plus Mintrate Cube (10040) - typically used for hand feeding with grain.  Feed one part of Parity Plus Mintrate Cube with three parts of grain.
  • Parity Plus Sow Boost 25 (10042) - to be used in conjunction with any commercial swine grow/finish product to meet the nutritional needs of high producing breeding stock.
In addition to the product pages, you can find the Parity Plus Quick Reference Guide on the Portal. As you work to transition customers to new products, hopefully you'll find this guide helpful.

Feeding and Managing This Year's Problematic Corn Silage

It appears this year's crop of corn silage has caused a drop in milk production for some herds.   This has been a common thread across dairy areas.   Analytical results are indicating that while fiber digestibility is very poor, starch levels are good.  Given this scenario, what are some strategies to help overcome this challenge?

Unfortunately, there are no easy answers.  Here are some recommendations from Dr. Brian Lammers, ADM Alliance Nutrition Commercial Dairy Nutritionist.

  • Optimize starch level. Starch drives milk production more than anything else.  Make sure producers are feeding enough ground corn to boost starch to the level where historically the herds have past success.
  • If fiber digestibility is poor, it may be increasing rumen fill and limiting intake.  If this occurs, reduce the amount of forage in the diet.
  • Once the maximum amount of starch that can be fed is reached, the next best option is to feed some high fiber digestible ingredients like citrus pulp, beet pulp, or corn germ meal.
  • Feed more fat.  The loss in milk production is due to a shortage in energy.  Feeding more fat can help. Monitor the rumen active fat level. Too high of rumen active fat may cause milk fat depression.
  • Increase sugar level on the diet, which can help with microbial activity.
  • Check DCAD to make sure the DCAD is over 20 which helps buffer the rumen and the cow's metabolism.
  • Over time corn silage will feed better as it sits longer in the silo.
  • If you perceive that your customer is considering switching to a competitor, consider asking your local Dairy Technical Support person to visit the dairy with you in order to offer possible suggestions for tweaking the ration. This strategy also gives more time for the corn silage to sit in the silo and hopefully provide more nutrient value.
  • KEEP WORKING AND NEVER EVER GIVE UP. Corn silage will feed better in a few months and everything will come together.

Double Whammy-Watch for Mycotoxins in the New Corn Silage

Due to stress corn plants have endured this year with some areas experiencing frosted corn silage prior to harvest, etc., the corn plant was more susceptible to mold growth and subsequent mycotoxin challenges.  Be on the look-out for possible mycotoxin related problems and take a proactive stance. Dr. Brian Lammers tested four samples of new corn silage, and these samples were high in vomitoxin:  2000, 2100, 3200, and 4500 ppb on dry matter basis.

So this means that we need to be as proactive as possible in minimizing the adverse effects of mycotoxins in our herds.

Dipteracide® can handle the billion dollar challenge facing cattle this season

The need for fly control in some areas of the United States will start soon-90 days and counting! The USDA estimates $1 BILLION of lost production is due to horn flies.  Expected gain loss from ineffective horn fly control in growing cattle ranges from 0.25-0.50 lb daily or 37.5-75 lb over a 150-day grazing period.

A 20% drop in milk production and 13-14 lb lighter weaned calves account for other production losses attributed to horn flies.

Dipteracide logoHow does ADM Dipteracide keep horn flies under control? ADM Dipteracide (ADM IGR; Insect Growth Regulator) works to break the horn fly life cycle by controlling the immature stages.

The key is to get in front of your prospects and customers NOW to remind them of the following feeding directions:

  • Start including Dipteracide in cattle rations in the spring (30 days before horn flies appear) and continue until cold weather restricts horn fly activity.
  • Dipteracide must be consumed at least every other day throughout the season.
  • Adequate mineral feeder space is needed-15 to 20 cattle per feeder. Location of mineral feeder may need to be adjusted to regulate consumption.

Check out the new Feed-Through Fly Control Product Comparison to educate yourself on the three products that are currently on the market for use in feed-through fly control.  This sales sheet is a useful tool as you start to talk to customers and need some assistance in deciphering the product differences among feed-through fly control compounds, discussing which flies are really costing a producer money, and helping producers decide what products will be most beneficial for the operation. Take some time to review it as these types of conversations can consume your sales calls if you're not prepared.

Why choose ADM Dipteracide over the others? Generally, on a cost per animal per day, Dipteracide is 32% lower than ClariFly± and Rabon*. Why should our customers pay more when Dipteracide can handle the billion dollar challenge facing cattle this season?

ADM Dipteracide sales aids and marketing pieces are available on our Specialty Ingredients Portal page. From the homepage of www.service.admani.com you can find us by clicking: Product Info > Specialty Ingredients
