Commercial Swine
I had the pleasure of traveling with one of our successful swine sales professionals a week ago and he made two interesting and unsolicited comments:
- The success of the MotivAteTM Starter Program has led to new business and he was looking forward to building on that with the MaxLean® Grow/Finish Program.
- Having new products and technologies to sell has been fun and has increased his prospecting efforts.
With those thoughts in mind, our Commercial Swine Team is proud to begin introducing the new Parity Plus® line of breeding herd products to complete our platform of product offerings. Parity Plus reflects the technologies within these products as we look to assist our customers in maximizing lifetime reproductive performance in their herds. Not only how Parity Plus products can impact the breeding herd, but how these products can help improve profitability throughout the entire production system.
We'll be sharing more detailed information in the coming weeks with a company-wide webinar scheduled for Monday, December 8, 2014. Please plan to attend/participate in the webinar, it will be time well invested. Our plans would be to transition away from older products over the first two months of 2015.
MaxLean Grow/Finish Program We are transitioning well into the new products associated with the new MaxLean grow/finish program. Conversions from plant to plant are occurring and with that, lots of communication.
Communication is obviously involved and important in transitioning existing customers to the new products. What's been equally or even more exciting is visiting with our sales professionals about the new prospects they want to share our new products and technologies with to grow their business.
As a reminder, the information below is on the Portal including product pages, quick reference guide and the webinar, which should help answer questions.
If you should have any questions relative to transitioning current customers to the appropriate product, feel free to contact Dr. Kevin Soltwedel (217) 257-8650 or Joel Wenninghoff (402) 480-1943.
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving with your family and friends.
Thank you.

Dairy
The following information provided by Bill Earley, National Dairy Accounts...
Feeding and Managing This Year's Problematic Corn Silage
It appears this year's crop of corn silage has caused a drop in milk production for some herds. This has been a common thread across dairy areas. Analytical results are indicating that while fiber digestibility is very poor, starch levels are good. Given this scenario, what are some strategies to help overcome this challenge?
Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. Here are some recommendations from Dr. Brian Lammers, ADM Alliance Nutrition Commercial Dairy Nutritionist.
- Optimize starch level. Starch drives milk production more than anything else. Make sure producers are feeding enough ground corn to boost starch to the level where historically the herds have past success.
- If fiber digestibility is poor, it may be increasing rumen fill and limiting intake. If this occurs, reduce the amount of forage in the diet.
- Once the maximum amount of starch that can be fed is reached, the next best option is to feed some high fiber digestible ingredients like citrus pulp, beet pulp, or corn germ meal.
- Feed more fat. The loss in milk production is due to a shortage in energy. Feeding more fat can help. Monitor the rumen active fat level. Too high of rumen active fat may cause milk fat depression.
- Increase sugar level on the diet, which can help with microbial activity.
- Check DCAD to make sure the DCAD is over 20 which helps buffer the rumen and the cow's metabolism.
- Over time corn silage will feed better as it sits longer in the silo.
- If you perceive that your customer is considering switching to a competitor, consider asking your local Dairy Technical Support person to visit the dairy with you in order to offer possible suggestions for tweaking the ration. This strategy also gives more time for the corn silage to sit in the silo and hopefully provide more nutrient value.
- KEEP WORKING AND NEVER EVER GIVE UP. Corn silage will feed better in a few months and everything will come together.
Double Whammy-Watch for Mycotoxins in the New Corn Silage
Due to stress corn plants have endured this year with some areas experiencing frosted corn silage prior to harvest, etc., the corn plant was more susceptible to mold growth and subsequent mycotoxin challenges. Be on the look-out for possible mycotoxin related problems and take a proactive stance. Dr. Brian Lammers tested four samples of new corn silage, and these samples were high in vomitoxin: 2000, 2100, 3200, and 4500 ppb on dry matter basis.
So this means that we need to be as proactive as possible in minimizing the adverse effects of mycotoxins in our herds.
Biofix®* Plus Biofix Plus provides nutritional support to enhance the integrity of the digestive system. Research (in vitro intestinal culture) shows the enzymes in Biofix may lower the levels of some naturally-occurring, harmful compounds sometimes found in feed.

NEW!
Bottom Line Report -- Economic Value of AminoGain in Beef, Grow to Finish
Background
Producers feeding growing cattle to finish need to ensure the diets are balanced because providing a diet that closely matches cattle nutrient and amino acid needs will enable cattle to gain more efficiently, lowering total cost. Beef cattle need specific amino acids to perform to their highest potential. If amino acid supply in the small intestine is insufficient, feed efficiency can become compromised, increasing feed cost. AminoGain® was designed to supply a greater amount of specific bypass proteins in supplements.
The response to AminoGain supplementation in all diets (growing through finishing) was...
- a 22 lb weight advantage at finish, resulting in a 5.5% advantage in average daily gain (ADG).
- a 7% advantage in feed efficiency with cattle consuming 0.5 lb/day less dry matter (ADMI) compared to cattle fed a non-RUP balanced
- supplement (refer to Table 1 in the attached report).
- The value of feeding AminoGain to cattle throughout the growing and finishing phases is presented in Table 2 of the attached report.
Implications*
- Positive effects for feed efficiency savings depend on ration cost and are anticipated to be at least ~$10/head.
- Live weight advantage when AminoGain-fed cattle were sold was ~$50/head due to higher ADG compared to cattle fed the non-RUP balanced diet.
Watch your inbox for "The Bottom Line" updates from the Research and Innovation teams. You can download this and other forthcoming reports from our new Portal page >> www.service.admani.com/TheBottomLine (Departments>Research>Bottom Line Reports tab)
