Nutritional Strategies to Help Swine Cope With Heat Stress
We've been fairly fortunate with the weather this summer, but as warmer weather continues to settle in, we've received more questions relative to strategies to mitigate the effects of heat stress.
Last month I discussed the opportunity to position Thermal Care™ 4 Swine as a means to address heat stress. As a bit of a review, we know that the product will positively impact heat dissipation, enhance gut health and provide better energy balance to the animal. The goal here is to help the animal maintain a more thermoneutral type of feed intake pattern. Although we're addressing the issue from a nutritional standpoint, we may/may not change our feeding strategy as it relates to nutrient levels.
We can also review/address formulation strategies with our customers to alleviate the effects of heat stress. From a formulation standpoint, we know we can also impact nutrient intake by:
- Increasing nutrient density of the diet - energy and amino acid levels - often times referred to as summer diets.
- Reduce heat increment of the diet - less complex carbohydrates and added fat.
- Combination of 1 and 2 above.
One simple method of improving energy utilization is often evaluating the cost of fat, how that might impact diet costs, anticipated improvements in performance and estimate a return on investment (ROI) to help producers make a good business decision. Another example may be as simple as recommending they incorporate Easyzyme®* into swine diets if they're not currently doing so. We know from our most recent research we can replace 20 lb of fat with 1 lb of Easyzyme Mixer and 19 lb of corn.
Given current ingredient costs and simply maintaining current performance, we'd be asking our customers to spend about $2.90 per ton while saving approximately $7.80 per ton in ingredient costs.
Don't hesitate to contact any of our commercial swine team for assistance in reviewing summer formulations:

Dairy
The following information provided by Bill Earley, National Dairy Accounts...
Dairy Solutions® Sweet Unique™ Entered in Dairy Herd Management 2014 Product Innovation Award Contest Sweet Unique is distinctive in that our patented cold pellet manufacturing technology is used to make pelleted calf starters and growers that maintain aroma and palatability comparable to texturized feeds while minimizing freshness, handling and storage concerns that accompany use of texturized feeds. Incorporation of this patented technology is a first in the dairy industry. As a consequence, Sweet Unique has been entered in this year's Dairy Herd Management Product Innovation contest. Sweet Unique will be competing alongside other innovative product entries available to the dairy industry ranging from feed to equipment to computer software technology.
Entries will be evaluated by Dairy Herd Management's panel of dairy farmers, agribusiness representatives and university experts. Entries will be judged on their originality within the marketplace, usefulness and value to dairy producers.
Nominated products will appear on www.dairyherd.com in August and September. The Top 10 products will be announced at the World Dairy Expo 2014 and recognized within Dairy Herd Management's media consisting of print, online and electronic formats.
Proactively Addressing Mycotoxin Concerns I heard on a recent Ag News report about the potential risk for molds and mycotoxins this season due to the high moisture levels in many areas of the country. I recently received a call from a source in Ohio concerning high levels of vomitoxin found in this year's wheat crop. So, what does this mean? It means being proactive and having your game plan established for your customers in the event this problem becomes widespread. The great news is that you have a sound arsenal of products to combat mycotoxins before it becomes a financial burden.
No magic bullet. First, we all realize that all of the answers aren't in a bag or product. It a systematic approach including:
- Isolation of where the mycotoxins are coming from, identifying what you are dealing with, their concentrations and establish your game plan.
- Dilution is the solution. If the problem is isolated to a given forage or ingredient, ration adjustments need to be made to reduce the amount of this ingredient within the diet.
- If intake is suppressed, adjustments need to be made to make the ration more nutrient dense accommodating for reduced intakes.
- We know that the immune systems in animals with mycotoxicosis are challenged. From a ration standpoint, ensuring that everything is being done to support the animal's immunocompetency is critical. Provide a more nutrient dense diet as mentioned previously. The use of highly bioavailable antioxidants, such as ADM's natural-source Vitamin E and selenium yeast is sound advice. Other products that you have in your arsenal to help support the immune system, GI tract health and rumen function in the stressed animal include Thermal Care™ during heat stress periods, CitriStim®, BreederBOOST™, Ultra One, Prosponse® Nutrium, Gut Check Premix, MasterPlex™ Plus and PowerSurge® Concentrate for calves.
- Work with producers on properly harvesting, packing, and sealing ensiled feed structures. This along with proper feed out, management is critical in minimizing the potential for mold and yeast formation.
- The use of silage inoculants to further preserve the forage is always sound advice. You have an outstanding line of inoculant products available including ECOSYL®*, Pro-Silage Builder®, Silo Guard®*, and Super Sile, providing differentiated modes of action--bacterial or oxygen-scavenging. For hay, choose Super Hay and Hay Guard®*. Also, the use of Ration-Guard®* within the TMR may be beneficial to help stop further heating of feed, keeping it fresh.
- BioFix®* Plus and Nutrasound are nutritional aids that may provide benefits when animals are challenged with mycotoxins. With commodities coming in from multiple sources and crops grown in a multitude of conditions, I think it may be wise to provide these products in diets on a routine basis when conditions warrant their use. Products such as Mold Control Pak-V, Ration-Guard & Silo Guard can help deter further mold growth.
So, will mycotoxins be a problem this year? They may. Will you be ready? You can be if you take a proactive approach, doing all you can today to preserve the quality of ensiled feeds and using all of the tools you have in your arsenal.

Second CropTM/Forage
John Klein
Second Crop/Forage Update
It's hard to believe that our summer is slipping away so quickly. In the past month-and-a-half our Second Crop applicator team members have been challenged to learn as much as they possibly can about forage management. We have received a wealth of information from our suppliers as well as from our own sales specialists. We are planning to continue to train over the next year with suppliers and seasoned sales specialists as time allows.
It's amazing how our team views forage management today with the intense trainings we have had. It's like a light got turned on. I catch myself paying a lot more attention to silage piles, covers, cut hay, bales and the intense "process" of putting up good forage. Because of this focused training, I find myself stopping to take pictures of piles and just realizing the potential in this area. I see countless opportunities to help customers and prospects by bringing them information that will help manage their forage. With our Second Crop treatments, we get to see all types of operations and management skills. There is a very clear separation on the quality of forage when it's managed correctly. Our best Second Crop piles are at locations were total forage management is top-notch. You can look at other silages and see how well they are managed. When we go onto farms today we make it a priority to encourage the producer to do the right things to make a good pile.
Cross-training the Second Crop team has some unique benefits. When they are on a farm for a day or possibly even weeks, they get the opportunity to have several conversations with the producer while they are treating. During this time, they offer suggestions on making better silage, haylage, hi-moisture corn, earlage and such. It opens doors and allows for a "soft sell" for the producer to think about.
I know we all have a lot on our plates today, but I would like to ask that you take time to evaluate your customers' forages. If you choose just one forage management tool to focus on with your customers, I think you will be surprised at how much money you will save them and the value that it will bring to your relationship with that customer.
Another thing to think about now is corn silage harvest. I'm sure the guys down south are getting equipment ready and it's a great time to ask about silage preservatives. Getting them to talk about it early gets them focused on it. It also helps us manage inventory better as well. Thanks for your time and have a safe summer!
