AMPT is currently being made in Abilene (KS) and Comanche (TX) with plans to manufacture in Quincy (IL) as well. These will be the three plants to produce AMPT, until the market dictates evaluating other production facilities.

A soft launch of AMPT will take place in June-July and then a national launch is planned at the 2014 National Angus Convention and Trade Show in Kansas City in early November, and continuing at the National Cattlemen's Beef Assoc. Convention in San Antonio in February 2015.

We are very excited about this new mineral line and look forward to informing and training as many people as possible on this new and impressive line of range minerals. The first AMPT webinar was presented Friday, May 23.  If you missed it, the AMPT webinar recording is now posted on the Portal under Beef/Presentations, Educational/Education & Training.

Here's what the AMPT webinar presentation covered:

  • Details of the exciting, new mineral launch
  • Learning what, "Everything you need, and nothing you don't" means with AMPT
  • Learning if trace minerals are always good in a formulation
  • Learning why you should know more about cobalt
  • Learning how ADM technology provides maximum benefit

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or other members of the beef team for more information: Jeff Hill, Chris Hagedorn, Dan Knoll, or Kent Egbert.

It's about time to get AMPT!

Forage Inoculants

It won't be long before it is time to start harvesting spring forages. Inoculants play a vital role in all good forage programs. Research from leading universities has shown the following benefits when using a good quality inoculant on fermented forages: Increased dry matter recovery, improved fermentation profiles, improved bunk stability and increased milk production. ADM Alliance Nutrition offers a number of excellent inoculant products. Refer to Super Sile, Pro-Silage Builder®, Pro-Silage StabilizerTM, and ECOSYL®*. Silo-Guard II®** is another preservative you may want to consider.

Dairy Training
The Commercial Dairy Team came together on May 13 for two days of technical training.  Numerous nutritional and technical topics were covered in addition to a breakout session on selling value added, specifically how to get five more pounds of milk from an example dairy herd.    In the next few weeks, all presentations from this training session will be posted to the portal for your use.

Summer Dairy Strategies

With favorable milk prices and reasonable input costs, our dairymen are in a position to have a profitable summer.   To achieve this goal reduced dry matter intakes, rapid drops in milk production, component compromise and immune stress are all obstacles that need to be overcome.    A heat stress strategy that combines nutritional technologies, dietary strategies and on farm management is required; a requirement ADM can help producers meet.   In this eNews I want to focus upon ADM dairy-focused animal health products that can help your producers get the most out of their diets this summer.

Heat Stress Challenges- Strategies

ADM Heat Stress Solutions

Maintaining dry matter intake is a challenge in the summer. So is secondary fermentation as the TMR heats up. Ensure feed is available during the coolest times of the day (morning and nighttime) when intake potential is greatest and/or consider increasing feeding frequency to keep feed fresh and reduce secondary fermentation.

(86310014) Ration-Guard* is an excellent
tool to help maintain TMR/grain mix integrity in hot weather. Ration-Guard minimizes mold and yeast growth, keeps rations cooler, increases bunk life, maximizes nutrients, and is easy to apply. For use in grain mixes Ration-Guard enhances the luster of sweet feed by improving "crawl" and reducing "bricking". Application Rates: Apply 1-3 lb per ton of TMR and/or 1-2 lb per ton of complete grain mix.
*Ration-Guard is a trademark of the International Stock Food Corp.

Milk quality and reproductive efficiency suffer under heat stress conditions with higher somatic cell counts and poorer conception rates.

(864500) BreederBOOST™ provides a unique combination of feed digestion, immune system and reproduction-enhancing properties for dairy cows. BreederBOOST delivers highly bioavailable organic trace minerals and antioxidants including Availa-4, Natural Source Vitamin E and Selenium Yeast. These properties help support the animal's immune system and provide the nutrients required to support reproductive performance.

Application Rate: BreederBOOST is fed at a low 1 oz/hd/day feeding rate and can be incorporated within Resolution blends.

With a reduction in dry matter intake there can be a decline in milk component production.

The addition of Prosponse® yeast and variety of buffer combinations ADM offers is necessary to stimulate intake, modulate rumen pH when intake levels are erratic, enhance fiber digestion and support butterfat formation.

ADM also offers a portfolio of Bypass Amino Acids (including Stimerall-P) to help maintain milk protein levels. Special attention to potassium, magnesium, sodium levels and overall DCAD balance in the diet is important in heat stress. DCAD Plus is an option to accomplish this. All can be incorporated within Resolution® blends.

Flies are a significant hot weather problem, can promote hoarding of the herd and add to animal stress levels.

IGR (methoprene) provides a safe feed-through fly control program without milk withdrawal. (85390016) IGR 0.4% Cattle Concentrate can provide the fly control required in the heat.

Application Rate: Feed to cattle at a rate of 11.3 mg per 100 lb of body weight per day. Recommend to be incorporated within Resolution blends to ensure accurate dosage.

Heat stress affects several important economic factors on the farm including intake suppression, reduction in milk and milk component output, reproductive efficiency and animal immune competency.

The Holy Grail of Heat Stress Nutritional Solutions-Thermal Care™-R provides a comprehensive heat dissipation and immune support technology to help alleviate heat stress challenges.

Application Rates: Calves: .5-1.6 oz/hd/day. Lactation, Dry & Transition Cows: 1.6 oz/hd/day. Thermal Care can be added into Resolution blends. For best results provide 2 weeks prior to the onset of heat stress.

NEW! Bottom Line Report - CitriStim Sow Reproductive Performance

CitriStim logo

Background

A study on the effects of CitriStim on sow reproductive performance and their offspring was conducted at the University of Arkansas. Sows and gilts were fed a control diet or control diet supplemented with either 0.1% or 0.2% CitriStim for the entire gestation and lactation periods.

The inclusion of CitriStim in the diets of sows increased number born alive, reduced percentage of piglets weighing less than 2.0 lb at birth, and increased number weaned per litter. Please refer to the linked report for supporting figures and data. For additional research information and procedure details about this study please refer to the Specialty Ingredients (SI) CitriStim Research Review available on the SI Portal page >> CitriStim Enhances Sow Repro. & Nursery Pig Perf. Research Review 05-12

Implications*

  • Based on the data from this study along with an average sow feed intake of 800 lb per litter and current market prices, a producer feeding CitriStim at 0.2% in gestation and lactation diets may be able to increase income potential by $10.25 per sow per litter.
  • The result is a $22.55 per sow yearly profit potential!

Watch your inbox for "The Bottom Line" updates from the Research and Innovation teams. You can download this and other forthcoming reports from our new Portal page >> www.service.admani.com/TheBottomLine (Departments > Research > Bottom Line Reports tab)

Feed-Through Fly Control Product Comparison

Three products are currently on the market for use in feed-through fly control that prevent eggs laid in "treated" manure from maturing into adult flies.

  • Dipteracide™ (S-methoprene; IGR)
  • Rabon™* (an organophosphate)
  • ClariFly®± (diflubenzuron; IGR)

The active ingredients in Dipteracide and ClariFly are in the same class of compounds; Insect Growth Regulators (IGR).

Dipteracide (S-methoprene):

Dipteracide contains S-methoprene and is labeled for horn flies; the most economically harmful cattle fly species. USDA estimates that horn flies can cost the cattle industry up to $1 billion in lost production.

Methoprene works to prevent larvae (maggots) from developing into pupae, and/or pupae from developing into adults, so it is possible to see maggots, but they will not mature into adult flies.  Horn and face flies lay eggs almost exclusively in fresh cow manure, whereas other fly species are more varied in their egg laying substrates.

Methoprene has an extremely low risk of toxicity in animals and the environment. Methoprene decomposes naturally with manure with no effect on soils or plants. It affects only the horn fly and will not harm beneficial insects. Methoprene is not harmful to warm blooded animals. The product is labeled for horn flies in beef and dairy cattle and has no meat or milk withholding.

Rabon (an organophosphate insecticide; tetrachlorvinphos)
Rabon is labeled for control of face, horn, stable and house flies in manure of beef and
dairy cattle. This pesticide is highly toxic to fish.

ClariFly (diflubenzuron)
ClariFly contains diflubenzuron, an active ingredient that is a chitin inhibitor. When the fly pupae start to form the exoskeleton, it actually never forms, and the larvae simply dry up and do not survive to adulthood. The product is labeled for beef and dairy cattle and calves to prevent house, horn, face and stable fly pupae development. Like Dipteracide, ClariFly has no meat or milk withholding.

To maximize the success of your fly control program, it is recommended that any
feed-through products be part of the control program rather than the entire program, and that all animals on the farm be treated. None of these products control fly development in decomposing organic matter piles since the active ingredient is not deposited in organic matter, such as decaying vegetation or feed waste. It's also suggested to start feeding the product(s) 30 days before flies appear, continuing until 30 days after the first killing frost.

Remember, the horn fly is still the biggest problem.  The USDA estimates that the horn fly costs producers nearly $1 billion in lost production each year. Why choose ADM Dipteracide over the others? Generally, on a cost per animal per day, Dipteracide is 32% lower than ClariFly and Rabon. Why pay more when Dipteracide can handle the billion dollar challenge facing your cattle this season?

Look for more fly control product comparison information to come soon. Visit the Specialty Ingredient Portal page or contact:

Reference Resources

Three excellent resources have recently been added to the Specialty section on the Portal under the Presentations, Educational tab. At your convenience you may review the following:

Advertising/Customer Awareness

To support and promote the most complete nutritional fawn/calf starter in the commercial wildlife industry, TraceMaxFawn Starter, 81482AAA, a full-page ad will appear in the spring issue of the North American Deer Farmer magazine. You may find this ad posted on the Specialty page on the Portal under Advertising.

To recognize the measurable and positive difference of Thermal Care, a half-page ad will appear in the May issue of The North American Elk Breeders Journal. This ad is also posted on the Specialty page on the Portal under Advertising.

New Deer & Elk Feeds

Check the Portal for the product pages for six, new performance-oriented deer and elk feeds. After a thorough review of current core and custom deer feeds, these new core products will meet or exceed the nutrition expectations for commercial wildlife operators. Whole herd nutrition, not just antler production, is the focus for producers of bigger bodied and healthier animals in this ever-increasing competitive industry. Here are some of the product benefits that meet the "new normal" nutrition requirements that top-performing commercial wildlife producers are seeking.

  • Multiple protein sources and balanced amino acid profile
  • Direct-fed microbials
  • Increased fat level from stabilized rice bran and grain sources
  • CitriStim®
  • Increased calcium/phosphorus ratio
  • NSE and increased vitamin E level
  • Increased vitamin D level
  • Garlic and Thermal Care options

Introducing High Caliber™ Deer Block 81654AAA6A

A new, highly palatable 25-lb deer block will be added to the ADM Hunter Sportsman product line under the High Caliber label. At that time, you'll find the product page under Product Pages/Deer & Elk on the Specialty section of the Portal.

Please note: At the availability date of 81654AAA6A, Deer Block 16 (81509AAA6A) will be discontinued.
