National Safety Month!
Safety:
The month of June celebrates more than just the start of summer with the school year coming to a close, the days getting longer and the sun shining brighter. It is also noted as National Safety Month by the National Safety Council.

The purpose of this special month is to bring our attention to important safety tips and habits that can create a healthier and better function home and work environment. The theme for 2013's NSM is "Safety Starts with Me", to promote the mindset that we shouldn't only look out for ourselves but our family, friends and neighbors as well. Our actions can have consequences and this theme is trying to direct the attention to that. By helping everybody understand that safety is a lifestyle that affects us all we are all able to become "safety leaders".

The National Safety Council breaks down this theme even further by zeroing in on a specific aspect of safety for each week of June. For the first week the focus is on preventing falls, trips and slips. The second week fixates on employee safety and wellness. The third week of June highlights emergency preparedness and the fourth zooms in on ergonomics.

While the main attractions are these topics the Safety Council touches on many more such as teenage driving and texting, summer safety and much more.

Community Spotlight
Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee Meals on Wheels Logo
"The mission of Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee, Inc. is to assist individuals to live independently by providing nutrition and caring supportive services."

Meals on Wheels was originally founded in 1972 with the vision to provide nutritious and ready to eat meals to the elderly and disabled residents of our community. The organization quickly grew into much more and there for the addition of the "Plus" was added to their name to represent all of the services that they offer. Some of the many services that they provide include: adult daycare, health monitoring, senior transportation, home delivered meals, The Food Bank of Manatee and much more.

How you can help:
-Donate: More than 60% of the funds for MOW must be raised through donations and fundraisers. All amounts are welcomed and appreciated to keep up the program and provide seniors with a hot and nutritious meal.
-Volunteer: MOW is in need of volunteers in all departments but specifically drivers to deliver the meals. They also need help in their "Friendship Dining Assistance" program and many others.
-Sponsorship: They are in need of sponsors and fundraisers to help raise money for their organizations and programs.
