Giving Back and Moving Ahead
The Pi Chapter at Mississippi State University organized a toy drive for a local orphanage for its fall community service project. GIS members began planning the event in the early fall, and Pi Chapter officers visited several classes to announce the details to their classmates. Students were given the opportunity to bring toys to the RMI office, drop off in a designated box in the hallway, or bring to our annual Christmas/Graduation Luncheon. We collected many toys and gifts for all ages. The Palmer Home house parents were thrilled to receive the gifts at their annual Christmas party. We look forward to partnering with them again for an activity in the spring.

The Pi Chapter has also been on the road this semester! Two members attended the International Conference in Charlotte, four members attended Alabama I-Day, and four members attended Troy University's Surplus Lines Conference. Pi Chapter was delighted to help serve in the chartering ceremony for Troy at their conference.

Mark your calendars for the 27th Annual Mississippi State Insurance Day on March 25 and 26. The keynote speaker for the event is William R. Berkley, CEO W.R. Berkley Corporation. Attendees will have a chance to earn up to twelve hours of continuing education, enjoy exciting social activities, and participate in a special Gamma Iota Sigma student session.

Alumni Connections

The Rho Chapter at Appalachian State University organized its semi-annual GIS Alumni event in Charlotte this December. All of the alumni in the Charlotte area gathered at a local restaurant to socialize with each other, along with several current students and professors. Holding alumni events helps foster relationships with our graduates in the industry and gives current students a chance to build insurance connections. It is so wonderful to see all of the GIS members enjoying one another's company, whether it be reminiscing on their collegiate experiences with the fraternity or sharing their knowledge with current students since entering the insurance industry. We appreciate the continued involvement and support of GIS alumni!

A Record-breaking Semester

The University of Iowa's Beta Alpha chapter has experienced another record-breaking semester. Chapter membership is at an all-time high, the ambassador program was introduced, the professional speaker series was full of high-level insurance executives, including the Chief Risk Officer of Principal Financial Group, and the chapter enjoyed two professional trips: Gamma Iota Sigma's 2013 International Conference and a visit to Allied Insurance Headquarters. Pictured are the students who visited Allied on November 8, 2013, who ranged from senior Vaughan Institute RMI students to freshman actuarial science students.

Allied, headquartered in Des Moines and the parent company of Nationwide, treated University of Iowa students to an action-packed day filled with educational presentations and hands-on learning. Presenters ranged from top-level executives, including the President of Allied, the President of Nationwide Agribusiness and the President Nationwide Investments, to entry-level University of Iowa and Beta Alpha Chapter alumni. By the end, students were well versed in the various functions of a large insurance company, including: underwriting, claims, sales, operations, actuarial pricing, catastrophe modeling, risk retention groups, and captive. Additionally, at the closing reception, participants were presented with an exceptional networking opportunity with over 40 Allied and Nationwide employees.

As the Fall semester closes and the Spring semester is right around the corner, the Beta Alpha Chapter is looking forward to the NAPSLO Conference hosted by Illinois State, the Annual RIMS Conference in Denver, and another stellar speaker series, which includes Todd Fuhs, Chief Actuary at Transamerica and Lara Baugh, Director of Risk Manager at John Deere Companies.
