On Tuesday, August 30th, Lubbock ISD voters approved the Tax Ratification Election (TRE) with 85.29% of the vote. We are so grateful for the support of our community as we maximize state resources, with the same tax rate, and create a pay-as-you-go model for instructional technology. We appreciate the many volunteers who worked in support of this initiative and their co-chairs, Ryan Curry and Jenny Cardelli. Now that voters have approved this action, the district will shift two cents of the tax rate from debt service to operations. In doing so, the district is now able to maximize resources available to us through the state funding formula. The result is an additional $5.5 million into the LISD operating budget.
These dollars will, first and foremost, be used for instructional technology for teachers and students as a tool for improved student performance. This will allow LISD to refresh instructional technology every three or four years without incurring debt. A smaller portion of the revenue will be used to fund priority instructional and facility projects across the district.
The school year is off to an excellent start. The best thing we can do for the future of Lubbock is to provide a quality public education. We are thankful to be part of a community that invests in educating its children, and equips them to be productive citizens in a 21st century world.
Sincerely,
Berhl Robertson, Jr., Ed.D

Principles of Biomedical Science Begins at MHS

The new Principles of Biomedical Science class in Monterey High School's Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program, taught by Jessica Lara, got off to a great start. On the fourth day of class, Lara set up a mock crime scene in the new testing center at MHS and exposed her students to one of the exciting activities the class will offer. Students were tasked with investigating the mock crime scene by searching, documenting and collecting evidence.
In this class, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. This is one of the more than 130 classes in LISD's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.
