TRE Early Voting Ends Today
ELECTION DAY IS AUGUST 30
The last day of early voting in the Lubbock ISD Tax Ratification Election (TRE) is today, August 26. The list of voting centers, along with more information about the TRE, can be found on the LISD website.
Jackson Named New Chief Technology Officer
Damon Jackson was named the new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Lubbock ISD at the August 25 meeting of the LISD Board of Trustees. Prior to naming Jackson, Superintendent Berhl Robertson, Jr. and trustees recognized outgoing CTO Terry Driscoll for 21 years of service and building an excellent IT foundation for the district. Jackson will begin his new role in mid-September.


Jackson is currently the Senior Infrastructure Manager for the City of Ft. Worth. He has been the CTO for the Tucson Unified School District in Tucson, Arizona, and for Ector County ISD in Odessa, Texas. His private industry experience includes Dell Computer Corporation and Hughes Aircraft. He is a veteran of the US Army, serving as a Signals Intelligence Analyst. Jackson is a West Texas native and received his bachelor's degree from Lubbock Christian University.

Community Support Through School Supply Donations

UNITED SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
The United Family partnered again with Lubbock-area school districts to host a school supply drive for local students in need. From July 20 through August 3, donations were accepted at all Lubbock and Slaton United locations. School districts benefiting from the drive included Cooper, Frenship, Lubbock, Roosevelt and Slaton. 



COMMUNITY PARTNERS STILL DELIVERING SUPPLIES



School supplies are still being delivered by community organizations and businesses. University Medical Center, Lubbock Hispanic Moms, Caprock Classic Car Club and Glasheen, Valles, and Inderman are a few of the donors who have delivered supplies to Lubbock ISD Central Office and various campuses. Lubbock ISD faculty, staff and students thank these partners for their ongoing support.



LISD Enters Partnership with United Supermarkets

Lubbock ISD and United Supermarkets solidified an already strong partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding at Thursday's school board meeting. The "Career Opportunity Program" will prepare students in the Culinary Arts and Floral Design programs for careers in the grocery industry and will serve as a national model for United's parent company, Albertson's.

Region 17 Secondary Teacher of the Year


LISD's 2016 Elementary Teacher of the Year, Daniela Torres, was named Region 17 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Torres is a fourth-grade bilingual/dual language teacher at Bean Elementary School who was also one of the speakers at the 2016 Convocation ceremony.

Joe Porras Recognized for 42 Years of Service

At the first Coaches Media Luncheon for the year, Assistant Athletic Director Mike Meeks recognized longtime employee Joe Porras for his service to Lubbock ISD. Porras began working at Lowrey Field in 1974 as a member of the chain gang during football games and now serves as the facilitator. He begins his 43rd season this school year. United Way Campaign Begins This Month
DISTRICT KICKOFF EVENT
Lubbock ISD is kicking off the United Way campaign on Wednesday, August 31 at Spirit Ranch, 701 Regis St. Festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. with lunch, speakers, prizes and more. All United Way Campus Coordinators and school principals are invited. RSVPs are requested by the end of the day today to Phyllis Jones, LISD community relations coordinator. 


CENTRAL OFFICE KICKOFF EVENT
LISD Central Office staff will kick off their United Way campaign on Friday, September 9th.
The event will be in the Jay Gordon Room at 11:30 a.m. with lunch, speakers, prizes and more. Any donation of $50 or more will earn a "jeans pass" and get to wear jeans every Friday through December 16th.
 
This year, there is an early bird drawing. Donors who give any amount  = by Wednesday, September 14th will have their name entered in the drawing for a half day off. Two winners will be selected. Donations should be submitted to Phyllis Jones.
 
The 23 agencies funded by the United Way support many of our LISD students and families.


Nominations Open for Teachers on the Rise

The Teacher on the Rise program kicked off the 2016-2017 school year at Market Street on 50th and Indiana on Tuesday. Representatives from Mrs. Baird's gave away muffins as they spoke with customers about the program. Teacher on the Rise, sponsored by Mrs. Baird's and United Supermarkets, recognizes teachers each month selected from student nominations.

Sympathy ToJulie Wyatt, assistant principal at Talkington SYWL, on the loss of her father, Tom Wilson, of Corsicana, on August 10. Mr. Wilson's love of football began at an early age. He played for Texas Tech and after graduating, began his coaching career, most notably as head football coach of the Texas A&M Aggies. He later returned to TTU as the offensive coordinator.


Sympathy To: Jack Purkeypile, principal at Monterey High School, on the loss of his mother, Ann Purkeypile Wilkins, on July 8. Ann studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, and was one of the first female deacons in Episcopal history when she was ordained in 1985.
